A.J.Gregor, a Sunbury resident, had written the message on the back of the card to his cousin Harriet on the 11th April 1912 informing her of his state of health and some of the town's activities. Plans for the new development included a gold course, housing, community and recreational facilities. The former mill and weir shown in the photograph were sited on the banks of Jacksons Creek downstream from the town of Sunbury. John Eadie, a Scottish immigrant established the water-driven flour mill on the banks of the creek after he arrived in the colony in 1866. The mill continued operating until the outbreak of World War 1 when the metal wheel and iron roofing were taken and used for the war effort. The hill in the back ground with the trees and buildings was the site of the former Sunbury Asylum. The building was the residence of the engineer who was responsible of managing the early electric supply that was installed in Sunbury in 1909. The town's power supply put an end to gas lighting that had been used and homes had the benefit of having electricity connected to their homes. In 1926 the State Electricity Commission took over supplying electrical power to Sunbury. Joseph Starkie was the Chairman of the Sunbury Waterworks Trust from 1905 to 1913. During that time he was instrumental in getting a permanent water supply installed for the town of Sunbury. After his death in April 1913, the townspeople erected a memorial which stood at the intersection of Brook and Stawell Street. It was unveiled on 26 January 1915 by Terence O'Brien. The original memorial included a drinking fountain and horse trough. As traffic increased within the town, the centre section of the fountain, without the horse trough, was resited in a reserve opposite the Memorial Hall. The photograph shows the monument on its original site. The Yakka Company established a factory in Sunbury in Barkly Street between Brook and Stations Streets in the late 1950s. The Sunbury factory provided employment for the town's population which was increasing. The building suppliers and the Sunbury CFA were sited at the northern end of Evans Street and in the past were away from the main shopping centre. As Sunbury grew from a country town to an outer suburb the town centre and shopping centre expanded along Evans and O'Shanassy Streets. Riddell Road is the continuation of Macedon Street and is on the west side of the town centre. The stone bridge was the only entry into Sunbury on the eastern side of the town and was in use until the road was re-routed and widened in the 1970s.A coloured photograph of the roadway over the Macedon Street bridge which spans Jacksons Creek. 'Craiglee' Winery was established by James Stewart Johnstone in 1865 and the property continued to function as a winery until the late 1920s. The vines were uprooted and the property was used for wool and fat lamb production. The nurses would have been employed at the Sunbury Asylum, which functioned for 120 years until in closed in 1992. The entire complex is now a housing estate, known as Jacksons Hill.Sunbury Asylum like other similar institutions were establish in outer rural areas or regional towns across the state.
