James Long established a confectionery business ...This tin came from the Sunshine Biscuit Factory in Ballarat. James Long established a confectionery business in Ballarat in 1854 and in 1921 it was known as the Sunshine Biscuit Company. In 1923 the factory was destroyed by fire and rebuilt. During World War Two 80% of the factory products went to the armed services. In 1947 the company was known as Ballarat Products Ltd and in 1962 it was called Sunshine Biscuits Ltd. In 1977 the factory was used to produce dry pet food (Friskies). The building was closed in 1991 and the site developed to include a supermarket, shops and housing. Up till about the late 1950s biscuits were mostly not packaged but sold loose by the pound in grocery stores from tins such as this. Broken biscuits were also sold at a cheaper price. Some biscuits were also sold at that time in smaller tins. This tin is of interest as an example of the tins from which biscuits were sold in the first half of the 20th century. It will be useful for display. This is a rectangular-shaped biscuit tin which is much rusted. The tin has a multi-coloured paper label that has been pasted around the sides. Much of this label has been torn away. The label shows images of biscuits. There is printing on the label and on the bottom of the tin. ‘Sunshine Raspberry Smiles’ ‘Ballarat Products Ltd.’ ‘This tin is not sold with the contents thereof but remains the property of Sunshine Biscuit Co Ballarat’ ‘Made in Australia 054’ sunshine biscuit factory, ballarat, history of warrnambool -

All the factories have now disappeared and have been replaced by retail or service businesses. Spalding has been replaced by a Bunnings Hardware store, while the main retail outlet on the Nettlefolds site is Harvey Norman. Ironically part of the Phoenix Fireworks site is now occupied by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, as well as other small businesses including a smash repair business, and a tyre retailer. The photograph provides a historical record of some of the types of manufacturing industries that existed in Sunshine, before retail or service industries began to replace them. Many of the younger generation do not know that fireworks, screws, or some sports items were manufactured in Sunshine not so long ago, and where the factories existed. The image depicted in this photographic copy is believed to be from circa late 1920's to early 1930's, and shows the NETTLEFOLDS, SPALDING, and the PHOENIX FIREWORKS factories. These factories were located in North Sunshine on the north side of Ballarat Road near Albion Station. Nettlefolds and Spalding are on the corner of Ballarat Road and McIntyre Road, with Nettlefolds being on the west side of McIntyre Road and Spalding on the east. Phoenix Fireworks factory is composed of small huts, and is situated on the north side of Phoenix Street at the rear of the Spalding factory. The photograph also shows a row of residential houses on Garnet Street which is on the east side of the Phoenix factory. Ballarat Road is still an undivided road and on the south side is a plantation of trees that once stretched from near Albion Station to Anderson Road. Other roads visible are Suffolk Road and Westmoreland Road.Nettlefolds Screw Worksspalding, phoenix fireworks, screw works, ballarat road, mcintyre road, phoenix street, garnet street, westmoreland road, suffolk road., nettlefolds -

In 1904 H. V. McKay purchased the Braybrook Implement Works nearby, and in 1906 he moved his Sunshine Harvester Works agricultural machinery business from Ballarat to Braybrook Junction. In 1907 the station and township were renamed Sunshine after the Sunshine Harvester Works. On 20 April 1908 (Easter Monday), Sunshine station was the scene of the biggest train disaster in Victoria, when 44 people were killed and 400 injured from the 1100 people that were aboard the two trains. A Melbourne bound train from Bendigo collided with the rear of a train from Ballarat. There is a memorial plaque on platform 1 at the present Sunshine station. Sunshine station has recently been undergoing a complete rebuild. On 20 January 2014 the station, although not yet completed, was opened for train use, after being closed for several weeks. This photograph is significant because it is a reminder that the present Sunshine station and the nearby area were once named Braybrook Junction. It also shows what the Station, the Signal Box, and the station personnel looked like in circa 1905.BRAYBROOK JUNCTNbraybrook junction station, railway, sunshine, train, transport, 1905, 1907, 1908, 7 september 1885 -

The rendering works produced sausage casings, meat meal, tallow, and fertiliser and operated as part of a large cluster of slaughterhouse related industries in Braybrook and Footscray districts. The founder, William Pridham was a prominent civic figure (Councillor, mayor, and community leader). Peerless Foods began in the 1950s as a small Melbourne business recycling and rendering meat by‑products with their early focus on rendering, tallow production, basic edible fats and oils. This positioned Peerless as a natural successor to Pridham’s operations. In 1982, Peerless Foods acquires Pridham’s Braybrook rendering business This acquisition gave Peerless a large, established industrial site, and by integrating Pridham’s century old rendering operations allowed Peerless to scale into a national fats and oils manufacturer During the 1980s and into the 2000s, Peerless went through a diversification process and expanded from tallow into edible oils, margarine, shortenings, bakery fats and foodservice oil. In 2005, Peerless purchased Unilever’s nonretail margarine and oil business, acquiring major Australian brands EOI, Copha, Fairy and Kremelta. This dramatically increased the Braybrook site’s production and distribution role. Peerless Holdings (Peerless Foods) now produces edible oils, spreads, shortenings, and bakery fats, supplies retail, foodservice, bakery, ingredients, and export markets. Peerless is still operating out of long-established Braybrook industrial complex, and the site remains one of the largest and longest running industrial facilities in Melbourne’s western suburbs. These tallow tanks are large, heated storage vessels that are used to hold rendered animal fat (tallow) in liquid form so it can be processed, refined, or transported. As tallow is solid at room temperature, these tanks keep it pumpable, and are fitted with steam coils, hot‑water jackets and insulated walls.evans street, braybrook, pridham -

The original clubhouse located at 24 Talmage Street Albion, was a former private residence of David Buchan Ferguson, the Managing Director of the Sunshine Harvester Works / H.V. McKay Massey Harris Pty Ltd. The house was converted into a club room, bar, kitchen and billiard room with a lawn bowls green being established in the early 1960s. In 1975 the rear of the residence was demolished and replaced with new club rooms, bar, kitchen, toilets and change facilities. Club access was restricted to members and guests only. Then in April 1968 the club was registered as The Sunshine City Club, and in the 1980s members formed a Darts Club and a Social Golf Club. Also, in this period the club was given the opportunity to purchase Number 22 Talmage Street which enabled the club to extend its car parking area. The early 1980s saw the introduction of ladies as members and they formed a Ladies Bowls Club and entered into the VLBA Pennant Competition; this required some more upgrading of the clubrooms and the installation of proper ladies' facilities. Also, the kitchen was refitted out with new equipment, club flat was renovated into a dining / function room and bar, and the number 2 bowls green was constructed which required the club to place Number 22 and 24 Talmage Street Albion onto the one title. The mid 1980s saw the introduction of Legalised Gaming Machines into Victoria and the club made an application and was granted a Gaming Venue License in 1997.5649 - Talmage St Albion - Sunshine Business Man's Club House.jpgtalmage street, albion, sunshine businessmen's club, eugene thomas "kinder" smith, oscar mckay, clarence gibson carlton, albert edward bolt, william dinnell, david buchan ferguson -

In 1932, Margery and Edna Self took over Mrs Magee’s confectionery shop on Main Road West. They expanded the business by purchasing Mr Hounslow’s petrol bowser. In 1934, the Self family built a new general store at 18 East Esplanade, St. Albans which became the foundation of the future Self Bros Supermarket. The family lived in a house behind the shop. The name Self Bros & Goddard emerged when Bernice Self married Alfred Goddard in 1947. By 1955, the directory lists Self Bros & Goddard Storekeepers and later in 1960 to 1974 as Licensed Grocers. This marks the shift from a family general store to a major grocery business Later years it became the Festival Supermarket and subsequently the St. Albans SUPA IGA Supermarket. This collection of photographs captures the various names the supermarket was known as Self Bros, Foodtown and Festival IGA Supermarket.5657.01 - East Esplanade 18 - Festival Supermarket (Sun Adv 237.3) 1993 Photo 01.JPG 5657.02 - East Esplanade 18 - Festival Supermarket (Sun Adv 237.3) 1993 Photo 02.JPG 5657.03 - East Esplanade 18 - Festival Supermarket (Sun Adv 237.3) 1993 Photo 03.JPG 5657.04 - East Esplanade 18 St. Albans - Self Bros Supermarket (Sun Adv 64.3) 1993 Photo 01.JPG 5657.05 - East Esplanade 18 St. Albans - Self Bros Supermarket (Sun Adv 64.3) 1993 Photo 02.JPG east esplanade, st. albans, festival supermarket, self bros, iga, alfred goddard -
