These photographs, taken by The Advocate in June 1993, document the aftermath of an accident at the Anderson Road level crossing on the Bendigo Railway Line. A car became stuck on the tracks and was struck by a freight train, splitting the vehicle in two. The driver was taken to hospital with serious leg injuries and extensive bruising, and a second vehicle was also damaged in the collision. The Albion Stationmaster’s Residence stood on the east side of the railway line, immediately north of the original 1891 station building, on the corner of St. Albans Road and the station entrance reserve. It was positioned on what is now the eastern service road / station car park area, facing the tracks. This was the standard placement for VR residences on the Bendigo line in the late 19th century. The house was removed in the 1970's when the station car park was expanded. The removal was also during the time when the practice of the removal of redundant VR housing stock was occurring. No trace remains today.This building was used as the official home of the Stationmaster at Albion Railway Station. This was standard Victorian Railways practice from the late 1800s through the mid‑20th century. Its functions included housing the stationmaster and their family, providing 24‑hour on‑call presence for emergencies, allowing the Stationmaster to supervise the yard, signals, and level crossing and acted as a local administrative base for the station’s operations Because Albion was a junction‑adjacent station (close to the Sunshine triangle and the goods sidings), the Stationmaster’s role at this station was significant.albion railway station, railway, albion

The Tottenham Yard began as a modest goods yard supporting local industries in Braybrook, Tottenham, and West Footscray, the Sunshine industrial belt and the nearby munitions and explosives factories Key features of the early yard included a small number of sidings, a goods shed, a basic loading / unloading facilities and a connection to the Tottenham triangle (Sunshine–Footscray–North Melbourne junction). As the yard expanded with additional siding and larger marshalling areas, there was a requirement to maintain the Ashley Street North – South access route for private and commercial travel. The work involved to solve this problem was to elevate the railway yard and place Ashley Street through a tunnel. This railway underpass for many years was simply known as the Ashley Street Tunnel. By the 1970s, the Tottenham Yard had become one of the largest freight yards in Victoria, second only to Dynon. In the 1982, the level crossing gates at the southern end of tunnel were removed, the tunnel extended southwards and the former Tottenham Railway Station was replaced with an elevated one above the new tunnel extension. During these works the road surface level was lowered to allow for higher trucks to pass through. At this point of time, the reference to tunnel was replaced with underpass. During the 1990’s and 2000’s, there was a decline in the use of the Tottenham Yard and many sidings were removed, shorten, converted to storage or left unused. St Albans Railway Station has one of the most layered histories of any suburban station in Melbourne’s west, beginning as a speculative land‑development stop in 1887, rebuilt in 1959 to ease traffic congestion, modernised in 2002, and finally transformed into a below‑ground station in 2016 as part of the Level Crossing Removal Project. The Deer Park Railway Station opened the 2nd April 1884 as the Kororoit Railway Station, built with the Serviceton line. Early facilities included three‑road yard, passenger platform on the southern track, goods platform on the northern track, interlocked signal box. It functioned as a crossing loop on what was then a single‑track railway. Renamed Deer Park Railway Station on the 3rd December 1889, reflecting the district’s identity shaped by the Melbourne Hunt Club and the explosives industry. The Railway Station was completely rebuilt as an elevated station as part of the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP). The new station opened on the 24th April 2023.During the 1980s and 1990s, the station’s poor condition and lack of adequate facilities attracted increasing media scrutiny. These photographs show the Ballarat railway line level crossing at Station Road, Deer Park. As traffic increased and Derrimut expanded to the south, the crossing became increasingly dangerous and congested. The North Western Program Alliance (NWPA) is one of the major delivery alliances within Victoria’s Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP). A portion of the NWPA team is currently based at the former Sunshine Ten Pin Bowling Alley, located at 505 Ballarat Road, Sunshine. From this site they have established the NWPA Walking Group, which undertakes weekly walks through Sunshine. These walks have been hosted by Alan Dash of the Sunshine and District History Society, who has been sharing detailed insights into the history of Sunshine and its surrounding neighbourhoods.
