Sunshine biscuits were made in Ballarat from 1921. During WW11 Sunshine biscuits devoted 80 percent of its output to army services. The company was twice devastated by fire. In 1923 the factory was completely destroyed and was rebuilt as a more modern factory on the same site. In 1939, a deliberately lit fire demolished the workshop. Sunshine biscuits continued to be sold until 1991. Biscuits were sold by weight from a large tin in the grocer's shop.This tin seems to be a commercial tin used in a grocery shop. After European settlement in the mid 1850s, the North Albion site was being used as grassland for farming and grazing. In the late 1930's, the threat of another world war in Europe was developing and the Australian Government decided it needed to increase and to be more independent in the manufacturing of munitions and explosives. The Albion site was chosen opposite the existing commercial ICI ANZ factory. ICI ANZ was chosen to design, construct and operate the new facilities. In 1940 the factory first began production of propellants for small arms and artillery that were required by the military forces during WW2. After the end of the WW2 the plant continued producing explosives and fertilizers for commercial use. The site was closed down in 1986, and the site went through an extensive decontamination and cleanup before being redeveloped into a housing estate with a shopping complex located in its center. The Black Powder Mill, built in 1942 is the only remaining building from the Albion explosives Factory. Noel Tozer is a former President of the Friends of the Black powder Mill. George Zachary Parnis migrated to Melbourne from Malta in 1964, arriving with his brother Manny. George was 19 years old at the time. Gladys Maissie "Mace" Babb (b28/10/1889 d22/1/1982) married George Napier Myers (b29/10/1879 d23/9/1948) in 1912 in Victoria. Mace was the daughter of James Babb, a pioneer of Braybrook who worked as a caretaker and road contractor. Repco Brabham Engines Pty Ltd, initially based at 81 Burnley Street, Richmond moved their entire engine program to 87 Mitchell Street, Maidstone in December 1964. This site became the Repco Brabham Engine Works, responsible for, design, machining, assembly, testing and race spec development. The Maidstone shop was small but closer to a precision engineering laboratory than a factory, but produced world beating engines. The Maidstone works produced the entire family of Repco–Brabham V8 engines, including the RB620 (1966), RB740 / RB730 Series (1967) and later 4.2 – 5.0 litre sportscar engines. The RB620 was the engine that powered Jack Bradham to his F1 1966 Driver’s and Constructors’ World Championship and the RB740 that powered Denny Hulme to his F1 1967 Constructors’ World Championship.This small but world‑class engineering shop built the Repco–Brabham V8 engines that won the 1966 and 1967 Formula One World Championships, the only F1 engines ever built in Australia to win a world title. The Self family story begins with two sisters, not the brothers. In 1932, Margery and Edna Self took over Mrs Magee’s confectionery shop on Main Road West. They expanded the business by purchasing Mr Hounslow’s petrol bowser. In 1934, the Self family built a new general store at 18 East Esplanade, St. Albans which became the foundation of the future Self Bros Supermarket. The family lived in a house behind the shop. The name Self Bros & Goddard emerged when Bernice Self married Alfred Goddard in 1947. By 1955, the directory lists Self Bros & Goddard Storekeepers and later in 1960 to 1974 as Licensed Grocers. This marks the shift from a family general store to a major grocery business Later years it became the Festival Supermarket and subsequently the St. Albans SUPA IGA Supermarket. In 1974, Sunshine Cellars helped The Advocate Newspaper to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The store created a special window display marking the fiftieth year of the newspaper in Sunshine. The display was created as mark of respect for the work The Advocate has done in Sunshine over the years. The Adovcate was originally called The Sunshine Advocate. The former Massey Ferguson site became a contentious issue for the City of Sunshine from the mid 1980's. The Council had acquired the land from Massey Ferguson and were considering developing the land into a large shopping complex. After complex discussions between developers, the site owners, councillors, consultants, legal advice and with the Victorian Government, the Council was forced to sell the site to private developers. The Victorian State Government stepped in and prevented the City of Sunshine in becoming the developers of the site due to the possible exposure to large amounts of financial debts. In the end, Sunshine ended up with two distinct shopping complexes, the Sunshine Plaza on the east side of Hampshire Road, which is also on former Massey Ferguson land, and the Sunshine Market Place, on the west side of Hampshire Road, the large site of the former Massey Ferguson manufacturing site.
