This postcard is part of an album of postcards which date from late 19th century to mid 20th century. This card is one of two cards which directly connects the album with an Emerald resident. The writer, O E Cowper was the wife of Percy Cowper who was the Emerald Postmaster 1929-1947. The couple appear to have been on a short holiday in the city. The postcard message refers to an Emerald resident, Mr Legge.This postcard in an album of postcards dating from the late 19th century to mid 20th century. When Andrew Black took occupancy of the shop ate 589 Swanston Street, Carlton, he was unaware that a few years earlier it had been the scene of a murder and became known as the 'pyjama case murder'. On 1st September 1934, the body of an unidentified woman dressed only in pyjamas was found near Albury, NSW. For the following decade it remained an unsolved mystery until 1944 when Tony Agostini was arrested and confessed to killing his wife. At the time of the murder, the Agostinis were living in the building, where Andrew later ran his shoe repair business. Photograph of L class tram 102 on Swanston Street in revenue service to East Brighton route 64. The photograph looks northward over Lonsdale Street with a W class tram in the distance along with several motor vehicles. A passenger safety zone with flashing lights is in clear view along with Christmas decorations hanging from the span wires. During the 1960s, L class trams were brought back into revenue service because of a shortage of rollingstock. Because the W class tram in the distance does not appear to be fitted with side lights, this suggests the photograph is from the 1960s. Photos of two tanks driving along Swanston Street taken from the windows of Legacy House. The occasion is not known. The tanks appear to be Leopard 1. One has elaborate equipment on the front. The date is approximately the late 1990s as the Queen Victoria Hospital has been demolished and the QV building has not been started. On the site opposite Legacy House is an open air market called The Sailyards, and what appears to be an ice rink or mini golf, called The Icehouse. It is a sunny day but the trees in front of the town hall have lost their leaves. The building on the left is the Queen Victoria Building. The Classic Restaurant, located in Swanson Street next to Young and Jacksons Hotel, was one of the many businesses owned by Ithacans in Melbourne's CBD. Nakis Raftopoulos ran the business during the 70 & 80s up until the property was sold and became a fast food chain outlet. The building has since been demolished as part of Melbourne's Metro Tunnel project. Many Ithacans who settled in Melbourne in the early years of the twentieth century opened restaurants In the CBD. From the 1950s onwards the number of these Ithacan owned businesses gradually declined and by the 1970s very few remained. The Classic Restaurant was one of the last remaining establishments in the CBD owned and operated by an Ithacan. A black and white photograph of the Classic Restaurant. The Cathedral Hotel was demolished by the Melbourne City Council to make way for the new City Square. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand.The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Andrew Black ran his successful shoe repair business in a shop in Swanston Street, Carlton situated just around the corner from Queensberry Street. The photo shows the conversion of Swanston Street cable trams to electric trams at the intersection with Lonsdale Street. The former cable tram curves into Lonsdale Street can be seen with cable track demolition works well underway. A "W "class tram is waiting to return to "Bakers Rd" (North Coburg). A cable tram set in Lonsdale Street is waiting to cross east over Swanston Street bound for either Collingwood or North Carlton. The new track for the cable tram crossing Swanston St is being wood blocked over the "H" track crossing. The new electric track on the north side of Lonsdale Street is being connected up to the existing electric track at the cross over. Welding is also taking place on the new track work. The Britannia Hotel has occupied the north-west corner of the intersection since the 1860's with current premises completed in 1920. Further up Swanston Street at 289-299, is the four story Barnet Glass building completed in 1909. Mr. Barnet Glass sold his successful business to Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre Company in 1905 and continued to trade at this location until 1939 as the Barnet Glass Rubber Company Limited manufacturing water-proof clothing.
