Ivory coloured early plastic dressing table set with hair brush, comb and oval hand mirror with bevel edged glass.personal effects, hairdressing, dressing table set

Dressing tables have been around since the beginning of the seventeenth century. However, it wasn't until the early to mid-20th century that middle-class homes included them in their furniture. They were often a matching part of a bedroom suite. Dressing tables often featured a variety of objects such as combs, brushes, hand mirrors, perfume bottles, cosmetics, nail buffers, ring holders, jewellery trinket boxes, trays and pin bowls or pin trays. The latter were small shallow containers used for storing hat pins, hair pins, safety pins, and perhaps earrings. They were made of various materials including glass, metal and ceramic. This pin bowl represents an era in the early-to-mid 20th century when matching dressing table accessories were popular and affordable to middle-class women. Dressing tables (also known as Vanity Tables in the U.S.A.) have been around since the beginning of the seventeenth century, however it wasn't until the early to mid 20th century that they began to be found in the homes of the middle class and they were often a matching part of a bedroom suite. Dressing tables often featured a variety of objects such as combs, brushes, hand mirrors, perfume bottles, cosmetics, nail buffers, ring holders, jewellery and trinket boxes and trays. The origins of this tray are unknown however its design is reminiscent of trays (and Dressing Table Sets) produced by two English firms in the mid 20th century - "Delina" and "Regent of London". A paper (written by the Warwickshire Industrial Archeology Society) notes that the products items produced by "Regent of London" in the 1940's "satisfied a demand for previously unattainable items, offered to the general public aching for change after wartime privations, post war austerity and years of having to 'make do and mend'." This tray is composed of several decorative elements and materials. The metal border is gilt brass with two filigree bow handles, the main part of the tray is two pieces of circular glass and the encased doily is a mix of embroidered net and petit point. It was suggested in the paper written by the Warwickshire Industrial Archeological Society that the different pieces would have probably been produced elsewhere and brought to the factory to be assembled into the finished product. This vanity or dressing table tray is significant as it is a rare example of an accessory available to and used by women in the mid 20th century. It is also significant as an example of an everyday household item which would have been a valued possession and was made in a style that reflected the importance placed on it to be decorative as well as functional.Round footed dressing table tray with a gilt brass border, filigree bow handles and an embroidered net and petit point doily encased in glass. The gilt border is decorated with a stylized leaf design on the side and a floral design on the top. The petit point embroidery in the center is of five flowers in pink, mauve and yellow surrounded by buds and leaves.vanity tray, dressing table tray, glass tray, gilt brass, petit point, embroidery, net embroidery, doily, filigree, brass tray, flagstaff hill maritime village, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill, warrnambool, flagstaff hill museum and village, domestic object, dressing table

Sarah Bird 4th from left (seated) and Edward Pepper on her left (standing). George Bird, 2nd from right (seated). George Bird her great-grandfather and Sarah Bird and Edward Pepper, her grandparents. [from Evelyn Observer and Bourke East Record, morning edition, 18 November 1904, p. 3:] ORANGE BLOSSOM. The marriage of Miss Sarah A. Bird, eldest daughter of Mr George Bird, of "View Hill," Eltham, to Mr Ernest Edward Pepper, of Diamond Creek, was celebrated at the residence of the bride's parents on Wednesday, 9th November, 1904. The ceremony took place at 4 p.m. and was performed by the Rev Percey Knight, B.A., of Alphington. The bride entered the drawing room with her father who gave her away, and the Wedding March, was nicely played by Miss Wild. The bride was prettily dressed in creme voile nicely tucked and gathered, trimmed with guipure lace and silk ruching, sprays of orange blossom, wreath and veil, and she carried a shower bouquet. Her travelling dress was a very pretty blue. The brides-maids were Miss Ethel Barker dressed in pale green voile trimmed with creme guipure lace and silk ruching; and Miss Button in creme voile, guipure lace, silk ruching; both carried pretty bouquets. The groomsmen were Mr Lorimer, of Diamond Creek, and Mr George Bird, brother of the bride. Between forty and fifty relatives and friends partook of a bountifully provided and nicely laid out breakfast. The usual toasts were honored, and congratulations were freely tendered "to the happy couple". The decorations were very tastefully executed by Miss Beatrice Nelson, and Mr Sayers. The evening was very pleasantly spent in singing, recitations, games, and other suitable pastimes, while others "tipped the light fantastic toe". About 10 p.m., "while all was merry as a marriage bell", the bride and bridegroom departed secretly "to cheat surprise and prying eyes". The presents were numerous and handsome:– Parents of the bride, sewing machine; Miss A. Bird, silver breakfast cruet; Miss N. Bird, bread board and knife; Master A. Bird, pair glass dishes; Master R. Antique Art Nouveau-style two piece crumb set 1890 - 1910, also known as a 'silent butler'. These were used in formal dining settings to discretely sweep crumbs from the table between courses. The elaborate asymmetrical organic design was inspired by nature, characteristic of this period. The brush is unusual being made of wood with horsehair bristles more commonly found in clothes brushes of this period. However, the attached silver covering shows similar design features to the pan indicating they were a set. This is an elaborately designed example of a functional item used to remove crumbs in formal dining setting. Scrapping on the pan indicate it was well used. The Art Nouveau design places it in the late Victorian or Edwardian period. The brush is unusual as most crumb catcher sets include a solid metal scraper rather than a bristle brush. Two piece Antique Art Nouveau style crumb catcher set. Pan has elaborate asymmetrical floral design. There is evidence of scrapping on flat elements of pan although the design elements are in good condition. Brush is unusual with a wooden handle to which a silver 1mm covering has been attached using small silver nails. Use of horsehair bristles on brush is unusual.Scratching on right underside rim of pan shows original owners name.art nouveau

The Billiard Room and South wing were completed in 1914, built by recommendation of the Lesee John Newton and the Government Tourist Officer and Supervising officer of the Government Chalet, James Boyce... "Boyce was present at the Chalet on 14 March to witness the completion of the new wing's foundations ...when he returned in June he found the wing approaching completion and that '... the billiard table was expected to reach the Chalet during the week'. The table possibly came second-hand from the Oriental Hotel, Bright. When visiting in March, Boyce had heard from a Mr Tewksbury 'that he is disposing of those at the Oriental Hotel so that if the Public Works Department is going to provide the table for the Chalet it might be possible to pick one up cheap from the Hotel'. It's reasonable that the Chalet did acquire one of the second-hand tables in 1914 and, and changed over to a new model in the 1930s. Three billiard tables remain in the Chalet Billiard Room today; one full sized table and two smaller tables, one perhaps a pool table. The full-sized table was made by the well-known billiard table manufacturers Alcock, Thomson & Taylor, who adopted this name when they merged their billiard businesses in January 1930. Henry Upton Alcock had initially established the business in Fitzroy in the mid-1850's and the table at the Chalet resembles the 'Squatter's Favourite' model that Alcock first produced in the nineteenth century from Australian timbers. this style of table was installed in Melbourne's Parliament buildings, several prestigious clubs as well as hotels and houses."(Pg 13-14. Antique celluloid "French Ivory" bedroom mirror and brush sets became popular mass-market luxury items in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Celluloid, invented in the 1860s, was the world's first successful thermoplastic. Manufacturers marketed it as "French Ivory," "Ivorine," or "Ivory Pyralin" to mimic genuine elephant ivory at an affordable price point. While lavish dressing table or "toilet sets" emerged during the Victorian period, production peaked between the 1900s and the 1930s. These items belonged to Edna Parker's mother Mrs Beatrice Rouget in the early 1900's. Seven antique pieces of an art deco bedroom vanity set made from celluloid or Ivory Celluloid to appear ivory like. The pieces include: 1. A short shoehorn with a hole at the end to hang it. 2. Wales Street State School poultry club lesson “Fresh eggs for breakfast will be available now in many Northcote homes. Mr Taylor of the Wales Street School, is explaining the points of a good hen to the members of the school poultry club.” Mr Taylor of Ballarat was founder of the largest Young Farmers’ Club in Western Victoria. He was also in charge of Grade 6 at Northcote’s Wales Street State School No. 3139 and president of their poultry club. The chook under inspection is the Australorp, an Australian breed developed from the UK Black Orpington and the US Rhode Island Red. It achieved world-wide popularity in the 1920s for its laying ability: in a 1922/23 world record, six hens laid an average of 309.5 eggs per hen during a 365 consecutive day trial. Mr. Taylor, of the Wales-street school, is explaining the points of a good hen to the members of the school poultry club. Trove article identifier: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article203841415 Description: The scene is outside in a school playground. 25 schoolboys and one teacher stand around a wooden table on which a large live chicken is standing. An instructor stands beside the chicken, holding a ruler, which rests lightly on the chicken’s neck. The boys wear shorts and shirts. Mostly they wear shoes or boots and socks, although one has bare feet. Some wear a jacket, some wear ties; one has braces. Their hair has been freshly brushed. One boy stands out from the group: he appears older than the others and wears a tie, shirt and blazer, with two badges on the lapel. The young teacher wears a slightly scruffy short suit with shirt and tie; the instructor wears a dark suit with tie and hat. The boys are carrying exercise books. They look to be around 10 years of age. Research by project volunteer, Louise McKenzie: From the text of the newspaper article we know this is the Wales Street Primary School, in Northcote. It opened in 1891 when it was known as the Prince of Wales Park State School. As a result of economic depression it closed in 1892, but reopened in 1900, and in 1920 reached its peak with 1232 pupils. The instructing teacher is Mr James Taylor, who was leader of the school’s Poultry Club. He wrote articles for the Age explaining that “since 1927 when the Young Farmers Clubs were first established in Victorian State schools, poultry keeping as a school project and a hobby has become extremely popular.” He encouraged girls and boys to become involved for profit and pleasure. White Leghorn and Australorp breeds were good egg producers, but most important were, “the 4 G’s of poultry farming:— grains, greens, grit and gumption — the latter being extremely important. One might be excused also for asking that the word "grit" be read with a double meaning. Brain sees through a thing, but grit sees it through. The successful person in poultry keeping is he or she who continues to work well with the birds long after the novelty has died off.” According to a visitor to the Poultry Club, expert farmer Mr Buscomb of NUPHA, the key features of a good bird were that it should be "as wide as possible across the saddle, have a clean face, close feathers, bayonet shaped legs, and fine textured combs and wattles." The Australorp is a chicken breed of Australian origin, developed out of Black Orpington (UK) and Rhode Island Red birds. White Leghorn, Langshan and Minorca elements were also added, resulting in a very utilitarian bird known as the Australian Black Orpington (Austral-orp). It achieved world-wide popularity in the 1920s for its laying ability. In 1922-23 a team of six hens set a world record by laying 1857 eggs for an average of 309.5 eggs per hen during a 365 consecutive day trial. In Australia the Australorp is recognised in black, white and blue colouring. The Weekly Times of Saturday 24 February 1934 reported that Mr James Taylor of Ballarat, founder of the largest Young Farmers’ club in Victoria (at Murtoa) was now in charge of Grade 6 at the Wales Street State School No. 3139 and was president of their poultry club. This feature followed in The Age of 16 March 1934, with another in 28 December 1934. The topic is again featured in the Weekly Times of April 1935 – Mr Taylor was making quite an impact! According to the seller, the set's origin is Derbyshire, England, and it moved to Russia with the family of professional immigrants before 1917.
