The Ballarat College of Advanced Education was formed by the merging of the State College of Victoria at Ballarat (SCVB) and the Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education (BIAE). The parent body of BIAE was the Ballarat School of Mines, founded in 1870 to train personnel for mining activities. The first awards at diploma level were made in 1896 in the branches of English, Metallurgy and Geology. Over the years the range of courses broadened to include Art, Physics, Business Studies, Humanities and Librarianship. The tertiary division of the School of Mines was relocated to Mount Helen in 1970. The SCVB was established in 1925 by the Education Department as the Ballarat Teachers' College. It was one of two provincial teachers' colleges to be established. The first courses were concerned with primary teaching and manual arts but later the subject areas of Physical Education, Environmental Sciences, Music, Art and Craft became major strengths. The merger took place in 1976 and by 1980 all staff were located at the Mount Helen Campus. In 1988 Student accomdation included: * Mount Helen - 290 individual furnished study/bedrooms arranged in units of ten to fourten rooms. $64.05 including 4 evening meals * Gillies Street - 56 individaul study/bedrooms in two blocks each containing kitchen/dining room areas, a common room, as well as bathroom areas. Does not include meals. $37.80 per week. * Beaufort House - Managed by the Education Department, with BCAE playing a coordinating role in the placement of students. 75 single and shared accomodation with full board (14 meals per week) $73.80 per week * Nurses' Home - Ballarat Base Hospital authorities made approximately 100 individual study/bedrooms availabel to female students. In 1971 a contract for a four-storey library was drawn up and construction began the same year. The building opened in 1973, occupying two stories of the current building. The library grew and with Commonwealth Grants was able to develop its collection. In 1987 the library achieved an annual budget of over $1 million. The Teachers Resource Collection was added and by 1989 the library expected to occupy the top three floors plus the lower ground floor. A flexible study area on the top floor was introduced 1990-1991. 2010 saw the completion of a new stage in the history of the library. It now includes new study and research areas including the Geoffrey Blainey Research Centre with access to the University's Art and Historical Collection. The E. J. Barker Library is named after a former Principal of the School of Mines Ballarat who then became the first Director of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education, now Federation University. Jack Barker played an active part in education and was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia. A typical book of general education considered suitable for use in schools in the last two decades of the 19th century. It contains a variety of subjects e.g. Victorian Constitution, Australian Zoology, Life in Saxon England, and poetical pieces, with notes and questions on the text in each section for guidance of the teachers.It is doubtful that this book was used in any schools in the Kiewa Valley but is valuable as a resource to explore how and what topics were being taught in this era .Book, hard cover, dark blue in colour with embossing on the front cover. Spine cover has separated from most of book. There are pages missing from the back of the book.There is a red stamp on the first page and apart from 'Education Department' the remaining four lines are almost illegible. Above the stamp is handwritten in blue ink S.S. 2733. The front cover is embossed and is titled Royal School Series, and underneath this is Royal Readers VI. education, schools, 19th century

Carronbank (demolished) in Marshall Avenue, Kew was once the home of the Rev Graham Henty Balfour. It had extensive grounds, including a tennis court at the rear of the property. It remained a private residence until c.1960. The Department of Education purchased Carronbank as a school for partially sighted children, opening in February 1961 as State School No 4483. During the period 1961 to c.1980, the building housed a number of services. From 1969 to 1974, it was the site of Carronbank State School, later renamed Carronbank School for Deaf-Blind Children. In 1973, the Department established the Visiting Teacher Service for the Visually Impaired at the site. Its aim was to support teachers working in Victorian Government, Catholic and Independent Schools. From 1983 the school operated as Statewide Resource Centre for Visiting Teachers of the Vision Impaired. In 1988, the amalgamation of Princess Elizabeth Junior School for Deaf Children, the Monnington Centre and Carronbank School for Deaf Blind Students allowed the Victorian Government to sell each of the sites. Monnington [Adeney Avenue, Kew] reverted to private ownership, while Glendonald and Carronbank in Marshall Avenue were demolished and subdivided.The donor, Mr Murray Osler, was Principal of the Monnington Special Education Centre in Adeney Avenue (Kew) from 1976. This photo, and an accompanying drawing of 'Monnington' are important primary resources for the delivery of education to and for deaf-blind children in Victoria.The photograph, framed under perspex, shows the tennis court of Carronbank which had been converted into a play area for the students of the school. The flat roofed building may have been a toilet block, added for the school. The garage brick wall belongs to No 11. Grass is growing on the original asphalt court and there is equipment and tunnels for play.
