The chimney extension on what was the former Carlton and United Breweries boiler house at Ballarat installed in 1972 and it is constructed of a special formulation of fibreglass reinforced plastics designed to operate at elevated temperature (ie boiler flue gas). It is thought to be one of 26 or 28 fibreglass boiler chimneys designed and installed in Victoria in the 1970s, and is thought to be one of the last to be removed. In its day the fibreglass chimney extension was at the cutting edge of fibreglass technology and is therefore well worth retaining. Removal of the chimney extension to the brick chimney outside the brewery building was deemed necessary to prolong the life of the chimney, and also because the fibreglass extension had reached end of life and posing a possible threat. According an Engineering assessment, fibreglass structures have a life expectancy of between 20 years (when fatigue loaded) and up to 100 years (static loaded). We don’t know when it was added to the chimney but believe it was most likely in the early 1970s. Given that it is subject to wind load and often observed to be moving in the wind it is likely that it will be at the end of its life. The chimney will be made good and we have the necessary planning approvals in place to undertake the works. The chimney extension was removed on 13 November 2015 in accordance with a planning permit obtained by the University. The extension is believed to have been added in the 1970s and was predominantly made from fibre glass. The structure was removed for safety reasons and to preserve the integrity of the historic brick chimney which supported it. The old brick Murray River Sawmill office was demolished around 1975. This appears to be part of one of the office buildings associated with the sawmill, taken in shadow, with the building well back on the block, on the bridge side. There is a dirt driveway in front of the building and stacks of timber next to the chimney side of the building. Trees are visible behind these stacks of timber. Two stacks of timber (1x 4 blocks high, 1 X 3 blocks high) are in front of the building between the window and the chimney This relates to photographs P000106, P000105 Sawmills in the Echuca area were historically and socially significant being a large employer in the area. The Murray River sawmill was one of the biggest and longest operating sawmills in the area. The decorative brick work is on the chimney at the boiler house at the former Sunbury Asylum. In its day the boiler house provided heated water for both heating and general use throughout the entire complex. The building with the tall chimney was the Boiler House at the former Sunbury Asylum. It was built in 1920 and using steam power, it supplied hot water and heating throughout the complex, using coal and briquettes. When the Asylum closed down in 1992, the Boiler House then became an arts centre for the local community.The tall chimney can be seen from many vantage points in Sunbury and is of local heritage significance because of its structure and design.A coloured photograph of an industrial building with a very tall chimney. Cast iron stoves burn solid fuel such as wood or coal, and are used for cooking and warmth. The stoves have a firebox with a grate where the fuel is burned. The hot air flows through flues and baffles that heat the stove top and the oven. Before cast iron stoves were invented, cooking and heating were carried out in outdoor open fires, and later, in fireplaces inside the home. In 1642 the first cast iron stove was manufactured in Lynn, Massachusetts, where molten cast iron was poured into a sand mould to make rectangular plates that were then joined together to make a box. Benjamin Franklin invented the more efficient Pennsylvania stove in 1744, and this efficient design is still used today. After the mid-19th century cast iron stoves were produced with burners in different positions, giving varied temperatures, so a wide variety of foods could be cooked at the same time at the most suitable heat, from slow cooking to baking scones. In contemporary times people the new wood-burning stoves had to meet the anti-pollution standards now in place to protect our environment. By the 1920s gas cookers were being introduced for domestic use, and by the 1930s electric home cookers were being offered to householders. PLANET STOVES In August 1925 the firm Cox and Rizzetti, Stove Works, and also Sydney Road, South Melbourne, advertised in the Brunswick and Coburg Leader of November 11, 1925 as "formerly with Harnwell and Sons" and as "specialists in solid cast iron Planet stoves ... which merit an inspection from builders and householders". The firm continued in business and was mentioned as sponsors in the King Island News in 1971. Harnwell and Sons was listed in the Victorian Government Gazette of 1894. It is curious that the firm was mentioned in an article in the Sunrasia Daily of June 14, 1934 titled 'Planet Stoves' as a manufacturer of Planet Stoves. This Planet No 3 stove is an uncommon example of cooking equipment used in kitchens in the early 20th century, as the firebox is above the oven rather than beside it. The cast iron combustion stove is significant as part of the evolution of domestic cooking. Previously cooking was mostly carried out in outdoors in open fires, and later in fireplaces indoors. Cast iron stoves are still used today and have additional features such as thermostats to monitor and maintain temperature, water heating pipes connected, and environmentally approved anti-pollution fittings. Stove; a compact, blackened cast iron combustion cooker, installed within a fireplace and enclosed by bricks on both sides. The upright rectangular stove has a flat top with three round, removable cook plates and a flue connected at the back. The front has three doors with round knob handles; a swing-down firebox door above a sliding ashtray, and two side-hinged oven doors above a sliding opening. Inside on the side walls are two pairs of runners. Behind the pair of doors is an oven with two pairs of rails and two removable metal shelves. The stove has cast inscriptions on the chimney flue and on the front of the right hand side stove door. The Abbotsford convent housed large numbers of Good Shepherd nuns, as well as a number of unmarried mothers and their children. The mothers worked in a large commercial laundry facility. The large chimney in this photo is most probably associated with the laundry.
