This postcard folder is one of three in a set of postcards that were published in Victoria, Australia, and collected together. The Valentine Publishing Co. Pty. Ltd. produced this folder. Valentine and Sons was a printing and photography business based in Dundee, Scotland, and in Canada. In the early 1900s, at the height of the postcard craze, the firm published large numbers of postcards in the U.K., Canada, U.S., Australia and South Africa. From around 1900 or earlier, the firm bought many lithographic images for its postcards from local and national photographers who sold publishing rights to Valentines, and the business was famous for publishing photographs of popular sites worldwide. This item is a souvenir booklet that would have been purchased by a tourist in the Warrnambool district in the mid 20th century. The photographs are representative of the tourist attractions of the area – Hopkins Falls, the mouth of the Hopkins River, Shelly Beach, the Breakwater, the Botanical Gardens etc. Tourism in Warrnambool began to be important towards the end of the 19th century when the coastal scenery, the beaches and the Sea Water Baths were advertised to promote Warrnambool as a spa resort town. Today tourism is a major industry in the city. This item is of minor interest as a souvenir of the type of postcard purchased by tourists in the mid 20th century. This is a piece of blue paper folded in two with black and blue printing on the front and back covers and an image of two kookaburras on the front cover. In the back of the front cover is pasted a strip of paper containing 13 black and white photographs folded in concertina fashion to form a booklet. The front cover has an extension that fits into a slot on the back cover to enclose the photographs. There is space for a stamp and an address on the front cover and space for the name of the sender on the back cover. Currently on display: The souvenir packs of cards open up with various photographs inside. Five are published by Nucolorvue Productions, Mentone, Victoria. One set by Murray Views, Gympie, Queensland. Two sets by The Valentine Publishing Co. Pty.Ltd Melbourne. One set of Colour Photographs by Capt.Frank Hurley. The single postcard is by Valentine's "Mail Novelty" Post Card Copyright. One is addressed to 'Mrs. H. Ellis c/- Mr. E. M. Straw, Harcourt, Vic.' Part of a larger collection of approx. 300 post cards donated by Robyn and Peter Straw picturing various regional towns in Australia, primarily Victoria and NSW. These postcards largely dated between c.1910-c.1960. Some are unbranded, while others are part of the Valentines Series, Rose Series or Kodak Series.Nine packages of photo souvenir postcards from various Australian cities and towns and one single postcard of a Scottie dog peering out of a doorway. It has a lift up flap with mini folded photographs of Lakes Entrance underneath. Other phoyogtaph selected views and fold out photograph packets of: Sydney, Warrnambool, Mildura, Albury, Shepparton Murray Valley, Orbost Adelaide Hills. Sepia coloured folder, enclosing photos of Bendigo. On front 'Beautiful Views in Color of Bendigo Vic.' Photo of Alexandra Fountain on LH side. 3 1/2d stamp on top RH corner. Folder addressed to Miss Diane Gordon 5A Warwick Street, Hobart, Tasmania. Colour photos include Alexandra Fountain, The City Hall, The Botanic Gardens, Hargreaves Street, The Conservatory Gardens, Rosalind Park, Pall Mall, The Upper Reserve Lake and The Conservatory Gardens. The Monument is constructed from all Australian materials it is cast bronze, 3.7 metres (12 feet high), took 12 months to complete at a cost of £750 AUD in 1938 or the equivalent to 1.26 million dollars AUD in 2013.
