Black long-sleeved ladies’ silk blouse. High round neckline at front with V shaped lace insert from throat to bust line. Stand up lace and net collar. Top edge of collar is trimmed with pink ribbon piping and gathered cream coloured lace. There are three strips of brown tape attached vertically to the collar at each shoulder and front RHS of collar to hold plastic strips to support the collar in upright position. One piece of plastic still in place. On either side of centre front are vertical panels of pintucks with knife pleats on either side facing inwards. There are three small pink decorative buttons (1 cm) below the throat and another group of three buttons 10 cm below the first group. The top has a back opening fastened with 10 press studs. The back has two vertical panels of pintucks and knife pleats. The long sleeves have cuffs at the wrist (5 cm) with U-shaped split on upper side. Each cuff has three decorative pink buttons on one side of the U-shaped split. The lower edge of each cuff is trimmed with black lace (5 - 6 cm) that falls over the wrist. This top hat belonged to bank manager Walter Tom Washington (1870-1948). Walter emigrated to Victoria from the Isle of Man at the age of eleven with his family in 1884. His daughter Lucy Frances Morrison (1905-2005) donated his hat to the Society in 1977, while she was living in Brighton. She recalled that he had purchased the hat for a wedding in 1911 and would wear it to church on Sundays. Established in London in 1773 by Miller Christy, Christys' continues to manufacture hats today. This hat belonged to Mr William Grant, Shire President of Bacchus Marsh. Mr Grant and his wife were invited to the opening of the first Federal Parliament held in the Royal Exhibition Building, Carlton, on the 9th May 1901. The opening was attended by the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York (later George V and Queen Mary) and 12,000 guests. Mr Grant's family were early settlers in Bacchus Marsh, and both he and his father were influential people in the town. They owned the property "Millbank". When William Grant died in 1924, his obituary in the 'Express' listed 17 public positions he held, including severaal terms as Shire President.This item has historical significance at a local, state and national level. Australian World War One Soldier memento. This postcard was possibly sent home from France during World War One, most probably from Harry Holmes of Ascot, Victoria. HENRY SMERDON (Harry) HOLMES was born in 1897 at the family property, ’Sauchieburn’, 17 km north of Ballarat, in the Ascot district. He was the youngest of four children. After finishing his education at St Patrick’s College, Ballarat, Henry joined the Holmes family farming interests. At the age of 18 he enlisted and served with AIF in Egypt, France and Belgium 1915-1918. Henry served at the famous battlegrounds of Ypes and Somme in the Australian Army 8th Battalion. He was a Driver with the 4th D.A.C. The postcard is of "The Ascot" boys. Leather, oval shaped hat box (in which is stored a men's silk top hat - 11400.834). Lined in blue velvet, and blue silk. Looped handle, 29cm long, attached with 2.5cm circular metal studs - possibly brass. An oval shaped insert, lined with blue velvet and silk, hold the inverted top hat. This hat was owned by John Sargood ( refer enclosed notes) whose initials are marked on trhe hat-box - J.S. - two cms high. An internal strap of black fabric, has a leather tab at one end with a metal key shaped fastener. Unfortunately the other end is broken off. This strap would hold the hat in the cavity. An outer leather strap, 4cm wide passes over the lid, and fastens at a 6.5cm diameter, circular metal disk with key lock. End of this strap is also broken - a piece of leather is inside the hat box. These were worn by Mr Whiteman, Marjorie Burton's father, when he sang in the church choir. Marjorie Burton ( nee Whiteman), born 12 June, in Birmingham, England came to Orbost in 1995. She came from a middle-class, working, church-going family. The invention of the dickey was to make the front of a full dress shirt a separate entity in itself, like the detachable collar, so it could be laundered and starched more easily than a traditional shirt with the front attached.Cloth dickeys simulated many different styles and were often often used in marching band or choir uniforms. However they are rarely worn now. These items are examples of a menswear accessory commonly used in the first half of the 20th century. Joyce Hayward was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1981 for services to the arts in Warrnambool. The British Empire Medal was instituted in 1917 as part of the Order of the British Empire and in 1922 became a separate award known as the British Empire Medal. Joyce Hayward came with her husband Cyril to Warrnambool from England in 1955. For 30 years they were the dominant figures in the performing arts organizations in Warrnambool. Joyce Hayward was the Director of the Warrnambool Theatre Company from 1955 to 1985 and directed more than 80 plays and musicals. She founded the Warrnambool Calisthenics Club, helped develop the Holiday Actors organization and was a key figure in the revival of the Warrnambool Arts Council in the 1970s. She was a Life Member of the Warrnambool Theatre Company. She also helped establish the Performing Arts Centre in Warrnambool. She received the Warrnambool City Council Citizenship Award in 1970.It is a significant honour to be awarded a British Empire Medal and the acquisition by the Warrnambool and District Historical Society of the medal awarded to Joyce Hayward is of considerable importance. Cyril Hayward was a leading figure in the Warrnambool Theatre Company as an actor, stage manager, electrician, technician and the person who did any other job that needed to be done. He was a Life Member of the Theatre Company and President of the Warrnambool branch of the Victorian Arts Council, organizer of the weekly talking newspaper for the visually impaired, a tutor for the local Adult Literacy Scheme, a founding member of the Warrnambool Probus Club and was on the building committee for the development and building of the Performing Arts Centre in Warrnambool. This souvenir of the Coronation of Edward V11 in 1902 was produced by William Ferguson when he was the Mayor of Warrnambool (1901-2). Ferguson was a jeweller, optician and watchmaker in Timor Street in the early 1900s. This is an interesting item as an example of the fervor with which the coronation of a King of England was celebrated in Warrnambool in 1902. It was appropriate at the time that the Mayor of Warrnambool should issue a commemorative ribbon as a loyal gesture from the civic authorities. This is a fragment of red silk ribbon which was a souvenir piece produced by William Ferguson in 1902 to celebrate the Coronation of King Edward V11 of England. The ribbon is braided at the sides and frayed at the edges and has a split in the middle and tears across the top section. No specific information is available on these items. Cuff links were used in place of buttons on the sleeves of men's dress shirts which were made with button holes on both edges of the cuff. They were typically used for more formal occasions and many sported decorative stones or facades. Although we have no known information on these items, cufflinks generally have social significance and also some aesthetic appeal. They have long been a fashion item for men , with first usage recorded around the 16th century. These are five metal cufflinks, all gold in colour. Three are matching with a small mother-of pearl stud and two are matching with a black shiny round stud. There is also a small metal clip which may not belong to the other items. The items are in a plastic jewellery box (probably not originally housing these items). The box has a hinged lid and a ridged top with the embossed image of a rose and it is lined with black felt and white silk. The black felt has four holes for attaching an item of jewellery. According to the handwritten information accompanying the item this umbrella has an ivory handle carved by native Africans on a Christian mission station in South Africa. The umbrella was sent to Mrs Donohue of Warrnambool who was an active member of the Church of England in Warrnambool early in the 20th century. No further information has been found on Mrs Donohue. This umbrella is of interest because of its carved ivory handle and because it was sent from South Africa to an Anglican Church adherent in Warrnambool early in the 20th century. This is a black silk umbrella with a carved ivory handle. The carving includes representations of leaves and seeds. Some of the silk is torn, some has disintegrated and some of it is detached from the metal spokes. The umbrella top is wooden.
