Emergency Service Wodonga SES Around oval badges: VICTORIA STATE ...Leslie William Cole was born on 31 January 1920 in Albury, the first child of William James Cole and Gwendoline Fair. Les spent most of his childhood living with his grandparents in Bethanga, Victoria. In 1934 when he finished school, Les moved into Wodonga. His first job was at Mates Timber Yard. He later worked for Mylons of Wodonga driving taxis and buses. In 1939 after completing militia training, Les applied to enlist with the RAAF and eventually trained as an Aircraft Mechanic. He was posted to the 6th Squadron, serving in Port Moresby, Milne Bay and Goodenough Island before returning to the RAAF base in Sale, Victoria. On discharge. Les returned to Wodonga and resumed working with Mylons. After a range of jobs, Les and his wife Lorna operated a shop in Ariel Street, Wodonga. In the community, Les was a founding member of Wodonga Lions Club. He also joined the Civil Defence which was a predecessor off the SES. He became the Communications Officer and trained other members. Les became the first Controller of the Wodonga Branch of the State Emergency Service, a position he held for 17 years. The new SES headquarters was named in his honour. In retirement he also worked as a Volunteer Community Driver. Les was also named Wodonga Citizen of the Year in 1984 Les continued living in Wodonga until the age of 103 in 2023, when he moved to Melbourne to be closer to his children. He passed away on 12 December 2023.These patches belonged to a local Wodonga resident who was instrumental in establishing the Wodonga SES.A collection of cloth and embroidery uniform patches worn on the uniform of Leslie Cole who was a founding and long-term member of the Wodonga State Emergency Service. A site bounded by the intersection of Main Road, Grand Boulevard and Looker Road at Montmorency was purchased in 1969. In 1970, Eltham Shire Council undertook roadworks to construct Apex Way in preparation for the new station as well as duplicate Main Road, Lower Plenty, east of Grand Boulevard including the new Lower Plenty Bridge, which had been opened in November 1966, bordering with the City of Heidelberg. It replaces the 50-year-old station and now includes four ambulance bays, four rest and recline rooms, a large training room and offstreet parking for staff. “The community campaigned long and hard for this new ambulance station and I’m delighted to have stood with them all the way,” Ms Ward said. The latest quarterly performance data showed 90.4 per cent of ambulances in Banyule arrived within 15 minutes of Code 1 emergencies — up from 89.2 per cent three months earlier. The Victorian Civil Ambulance had a fleet of 40 of these ambulances which were sturdy and tough vehicles. This vehicle was in service at Davenport, Tasmania till 1970. The Sate Emergency Service then used the vehicle for a further three years before it was retired. The Ambulance Historical Society of Victoria purchased the vehicle in 2006. This vehicle was used for patient clinic runs between Morabbin and Kingston Hospital. It then was modified into an ambulance mobile communications vehicle. Found to be too small to fulfil this role it was later allocated to the Healesville State Emergency Service. It then returned to Ambulance Victoria where it was stored at Eltham for ten years. The vehicle was repaired mechanically by Bill Redpath in 2016 and repainted. It will be restored internally by AHSV members and former MICA paramedics to represent Car 208, Victoria's and Australia's first Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA). Yields information about the correspondence that was sent to various parties about the opening of tram tracks for underground services in Ballarat.Letter on SECV letterhead, "Ballarat Electricity Supply and Tramways", not dated, gives phone number, address, duplicated in blue ink, titled "Crossing Under Tramway Tracks", consisting of two foolscap sheets and one quarto sheet, pinned together in the top left hand corner. Would have been written as a base letter to go various bodies, has a Mr. Hornabrook's signature printed on it. Outlines the processes that have to be undertaken in order to install pipelines under tram tracks. Allows for Emergency installations, gives depths and installation requirements. The third sheet is an application form to install the service.
