This is a rare programme detailing a concert presented by the visiting Royal Marines Band, H.M.S. "Renown" and two local military bands, the Victorian Returned Soldiers' and Sailors' Memorial Band and the Victorian Railways Military Band. The concert was held at the Green Mill, Princes Bridge on Sunday 8th May, 1927. In the programme it can be seen that the bands presented several seperate items and also some combined items.This program is significant, not only for its rarity but also for the fact that it highlights one of the concerts that the Band of H.M.S. GEORGE ROSE 1861-1942: - George Rose was a well-known Victorian photographer, famous for his late 19th and early 20th century photography. He was born in Clunes, Victoria, and was in his 20th year when he founded Rose Stereograph Company in 1880. He took the opportunity of a popular trend of the times to produce stereographs, pairs of almost duplicate photographs that appeared in 3D when viewed in a handheld stereo viewer. By the 1920s, these lost their popularity, so he used his photographic skills to produce cards and postcards of scenes and people. The twelve photographs in the Rose postcard folders include locations connected to other items in our Collection, including the Valentine postcard folder in this set. The photographs are titled: - . The George Rose postcard folders in this set were produced in Victoria and include pictures taken by the renowned photographer between 1880 and 1942. Other postcards in our collection have photographs of the same or similar locations at different periods in time. Each postcard records a moment in history and is significant as a way to compare and show the changes in the local environment and community, building a story of the local history. The images record changes in the coastline, land, bay, buildings and other structures, roads, transportation and even the fashions of the times. This copy folder is one of a set of three. This folder has a green-grey textured rectangular card cover with a sketch of a rose on the front. The cover also contains the name of the postcard series, the location of the series' focus, the producer's details, and lines for adding an address. The folded cover contains a long, concertinaed page with six titled photographs on each side, totalling twelve. The folder contains scenes from Warrnambool and nearby popular areas, including Lady Bay, the Port of Warrnambool, the Warrnambool Breakwater, the Viaduct, the Merri River Footbridge, the Hopkins River Mouth, and Proudfoot’s and the Fanny Nelson/Flett boathouses. The cover has a sketch of a rose and inscriptions. Taken in 1908, the photograph depicts a long line of Australian soldiers riding atop horses. They marching down Ford St, Beechworth. This group were part of the Beechworth Mounted Rifles; a voluntary detachment of the Australian Light Horse Militia. This unit consisted of soldiers from the Euroa, Longwood, Violet Town, Benalla, Thoona, Wangaratta, Rutherglen, and Beechworth Detachments of Victorian Rifles, and subsequently formed into the 8th Australian Light Horse Regiment (Victorian Mounted Rifles). The Victorian Mounted Rifles was gazetted as a volunteer formation on 2 December 1885 with the aim of consolidating all the disparate calvary units dispersed across Victoria into a coordinated and single administrative and military unit. The Victorian Mounted Rifles fought in the Second Boer War (1889 - 1902), although it is unknown if the group depicted in this image were involved in the conflict.The photograph is historically significant due to its connection to the Australian Light Horse Regiment, specifically of the Victorian Mounted Rifles. This unit retains a special significance within Victorian culture, as there is a memorial and monument - erected in 1903 - honouring their service on St. Kilda Road in Melbourne. The record has strong research potential. This is due to the ongoing scholarly and public interest in war, military history, and the ANZAC legend. The historic context of this record can provide insight into Australia's history, military and defence policies. A tan hardcover book The Education Department's Record of War Service, Victoria 1914 - 1919 printed in gold lettering on the front cover with an outline of a symbol of a crest, with a crown and five stars. The title page has the title, crest and a large black outlined illustration of an angel holding a sword and placing a laurel wreath onto the head of a soldier from the First World War kneeling in front of two children below him; a girl knitting and a boy holding a toy. The 1914 and 1919 numbers are below above the VED crest letters inside a circle. There is a presentation page at the front dedicacting the book to Sgt Francis H. Francis Sebire. A Foreword explains the meaning of the included records. A loose photocopy at the front of the book is of a page of four photographs of enlisted soldiers, including Sgt Francis H. Sebire Ob. 20.11.1916. On pp.87 and 88 there is a photo of Francis and information about his enlistment and teaching. The booklet's full title is 'Motorists and Tourists who assist to build The Great Ocean Road (Barwon Heads to Warrnambool) will have helped to found a worthy Memorial to all Victorian Soldiers and a National Asset for Victoria.' Date of the copy is unknown. The booklet is an appeal for donations toward the construction of the Great Ocean Road which, upon completion, would then be a Memorial to soldiers and, during construction, provide employment for returned soldiers. This leaflet published by The Great Ocean Road Trust in 1918 gives information about the proposed building of the Great Ocean Road from Barwon Heads to Warrnambool as a memorial to Victorian soldiers in World War One. The President of the Trust, which was a private company seeking donations from the public, was Howard Hitchcock, the Mayor of Geelong. The Memorial Great Ocean Road commenced in 1919 with 3000 ex-servicemen employed to build the road. In 1932 the road was completed to Apollo Bay and in 1936 the road was officially handed into the care of the State Government. This leaflet is of some significance as it shows the initial efforts by Howard Hitchcock of Geelong and a private trust to build the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. All three men had a long association with 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles. John Neale served in RAN during WWII; post war he joined 8/13 VMR as a trooper in 1948. He rose through the ranks to command the regiment in 1972-76, and later became Honorary Colonel. Ron Almond served in WWII; following the war he joined the Regular Army and served several postings to the Cadre Staff of 8/13 VMR including a post as Regimentla Sergeant Major. He also served with the Australian Army Training Team in South Vietnam. Bill Woolford served in the Royal Marines in WWII; post war he migrated to Australia joining the Victoria Police and was posted to Wodonga.
