Legacy even had a special race named after it: “The Legacy Widows Appeal Handicap”. ...For many years Legacy had a "Back to Caulfield Race Day" for Legatees, widows and their families. In 1995 a Legacy 'Lone Pine' was planted. The article in the Answer says: “We were delighted with the many Legacy Widows, Legatees and friends of Legacy who participated in the Commemorative Race Day at Caulfield Sunday 25th August - marking the 75th anniversary of the RAAF. The VATC had a range of displays and activities including a breathtaking parachute demonstration by the Blue Eagles. It was touch and go for a while due to the weather conditions but once the Blue Eagles jumped they all reached their designated target in front of the winning post. Legacy even had a special race named after it: “The Legacy Widows Appeal Handicap”. Our thanks to the VATC for this courtesy. Hope we had a few winners! Vice President, Legatee Brian ‘Lucky’ Luscombe placed a wreath at the legacy ‘Lone Pine’ - a descendant of the Gallipoli ‘Lone Pine’ on behalf of the Legacy Family. The historic tree was presented to Caulfield last year as part of the events to mark the 1995 Australia Remembers year.” The photos show children playing mini golf as well as the Historical Re-enactment Society of Australia with old military equipment and wearing old military uniforms. The racecourse also had a vintage plane on display with military vehicles.Legacy retains a tie with Caulfield racecourse as it was once an army camp and staging post of young men going overseas to war and now it is the site of a lone pine. Magoot won, with Affability second and Great Bear third. In the foreground is a crowd of racegoers in the Members area, showing significantly more women in attendance than men. It is a bright, sunny Tuesday afternoon. The women are wearing small or large brimmed hats and are mostly swathed in generously cut coats with long sleeves that are mid calf length. Some women carry umbrellas to protect them from the sun. The men are wearing suits and hats. The women and men are mostly standing in discrete, rather than mixed groups. More spectators are standing on a banked area in the centre of the track, a large crowd is trackside on the left and another crowd is located to the right of the photo along the final straight. There are stewards on horses in front of the members reserve, and a field of 12 horses approaches the winning post. On a slope at the rear of the photo is evidence of a fairly new housing development, evidenced by the small number of trees. Beyond this there is some vacant land to the left and then more dense housing is evidenced to the right. In the photo the white fencing delineating the course and spectator areas creates wonderful lines and curves. It is a very sharp and clear image. The race underway is the Koombahla Trial Handicap, which was won by Magoot by a length from Affability, with half a length back to Great Bear. At this juncture, Magoot won 3 of 4 starts, and subsequently on Saturday 30 December 1933, with a new up and coming young Flemington trainer J M Murphy, and popular mount Harold Skidmore, Magoot was the favourite and winner of the day’s principal event at Moonee Valley. The Weekly Times that day reported that Magoot had been sold to Launceston sportsman Mr W C Learoyd. The winnings from this race, 400 Pounds , was apparently sufficient to offset the cost of the horse, and would be the equivalent of approximately $9,500 in today’s money. The same article describes Magoot as a “Magpie” gelding as his bloodline was Magpie Tullalah from New Zealand. Sadly, on 9 October 1935, the Examiner (Launceston) reported that Magoot had to be destroyed after falling and breaking her shoulder while running in the Grovedale Handicap in Geelong, but such was her reputation that she warranted an accompanying photograph. Moonee Valley Racecourse was established in 1883 on private land by its owner WS (Sam) Cox – after whom the prestigious horserace, the WS Cox Plate is named. It is located 6 km from the Melbourne CBD in the suburb of Moonee Ponds. It became a non-proprietary property in 1935, and today the Cox Plate, run over 2040 m. each October, is the richest weight-for-age race in Australia for 3 year old and over, under Weight for Age conditions.” According to the Austadiums website, Moonee Valley has a “unique amphitheatre track and was the first Australian metropolitan track to conduct night racing.” This amphitheatre style is evident in Hugh Bull’s photo. His achievements included winning ...From Aussie Velos: Alfred George Healing was born in 1868 in the suburb of Richmond, Melbourne (VIC). Starting in the cycle industry as a cycle builder and repairer in 1898, he obtained the Victorian agency for the English “Haddon” bicycle located on Bridge Road, Richmond. With many years behind him in the bicycle industry in 1907 he opened a small shop from borrowing £50 from his sister and began operating as A.G Healing. Importing bicycle parts Healing was quickly gaining a reputation for his quality and service among the cycling community, with steady business growth, Healing stumbled across an error that had been made in a recent order which resulted in twice the number of bicycle parts received. With no finances to pay for them, Healing decided to cycle around Victoria selling these parts to make the money he needed to fix up the order. As Healing travelled across Victoria he found that there was such a large market place for cycling gear that the order was soon fixed. It became apparent that Healing needed to open cycle shops in various locations. By 1912 Healing decided to open up his own proprietary company in Niagara Lane, Melbourne (VIC), the company was surging with enthusiastic cyclists and commuters and other branches began to spread all over state of Victoria. In 1921 Healing’s son Keith joined the firm and became an apprentice bicycle maker and Healing cycles grew more popular and at peak production 25,000 bicycles were made per year. Shops under the name of Healing were now operating across Australia. The business was now transferred to another location of Melbourne House, Post-office place (MELB). In 1926 Duncan and Co. wholesale and retail distributors of automotive parts was absorbed and was occupied in a larger building in Franklin Street (MELB) to maintain the warehouse operations. A.G Healing was now a public company. By 1933 the firm also began to specialize in importing radios and later began to make their own. One of the many Champions who rode on a Healing cycle was W.K “Bill” Moritz. His achievements included winning all major events in Australia and New Zealand during the years of 1936-37 path racing season. In 1936 Healing released a lightweight cycle that would rule in their supreme line-up, built from the lightest possible materials, the frame and forks were chrome plated, stripped for racing weighed exactly 16 1/2 lbs. It was fitted with special “Osgear” three-speed gear and built specially built for D. Byrant. By 1937, Healing cycles were being ridden by many, at the exhibition board track Jack Molloy won the Victorian ten-mile amateur championship, Bill Moritz captured the five mile professional, and Tassle Johnson the five-mile amateur scratch race. These wins brought up the total championships won in one week by Healing cycles to six.A hire agreement (hire purchase) between H.L.
