An adze is an ancient and versatile cutting tool and has been in use for thousands of years. Adze are similar to an axe but with the cutting edge perpendicular to the handle rather than parallel. They have been used since the Stone Age. Adzes are hand tools used for smoothing or carving wood. The subject item was made by Ward & Payne of the Limbrick Works at Hillsborough, Sheffield England manufacturers of hand-forged tools. Their trademark registered in 1850 was a Letter "W" & "P" stamped into the steel. The firm was established by David Ward (1767-1822) in 1803 the company became David Ward & Sons, in 1837 after Ward's son Edward joined the firm. In 1845 Henry Payne the founder's son-in-law became a partner but died in 1850 after which the company reverted to the Ward family. The business then concentrated on making carving tools, chisels and gouges. In 1882 David Ward's grandson David Ward Jr. (1835-1889) purchased land and built a factory at Sheffield North known as the "Limerick Wheel". For a time Wards operated from both 106-114 West Street Sheffield and at Limbrick Road, Hillsborough on the river Loxley. By 1911 they had expanded into making spades, forks, sheep shears and many other types of edged tools including drills and wood planes. In 1967 Wilkinson Sword purchased all the company's share capital and continued to sell Ward & Payne tools until 1970 when a fire burned the factory down and housing development was built on the site. The subject item is significant as it gives a snapshot of the technological development of sailing ships and their operation before steam-powered vessels took over around the world. Tools such as the subject item demonstrate the traditional craftsmanship and skill of the shipwright and the aesthetic quality of the timber ships designs of the time. Ward & Payne was founded in Sheffield by David Ward, an edge-tool manufacturer in 1803. The company had the name, David Ward. David Ward's son Edward joined the company around 1837 and the company name was changed to David Ward & Sons or David Ward & Co. Perhaps both names were used in succession it is unclear. Henry Payne appears as an edge tool maker in 1837 and joins the company before 1845. Perhaps he joined in 1837, as a result, this caused the name change to David Ward & Co. In 1843 Henry Payne registered the trademark name of Ward & Payne consisting of the crossed hammers above an anvil with W to the left and P to the right. Henry Payne became the junior partner in 1845 and died in 1850 and ownership of the company then reverted to the Ward family. After 1845 the firm built a large business in edge tools concentrating on carving tools, chisels, and gouges. Another David Ward (1835 - 1889), possibly the son of Edward Ward, took over the company in 1855 and was an aggressive young executive with the company before that. He grew the company's fortunes in both the sheep shearing scissor and carving tool businesses. The company grew and expanded its factory to a full city block and published a 501-page catalog in 1911. The company was still in business up to around 1970.A tool made by a well-known company and regarded today as a collector's item for those enthusiasts that collect vintage woodworking tools. The invention of a hand drill is credited to Arthur James Arnot and William Blanch Brain of Melbourne, Australia who patented the electric drill in 1889. In 1895, the first portable handheld drill was created by brothers Wilhem & Carl Fein of Stuttgart, Germany. Hand-powered devices have been used for millennia. However, during the last quarter of the 19th century a radically improved generation of tools appeared. These tools took advantage of modern mass production machinery and processes (like interchangeable parts) and an increased availability in superior material (metal instead of wood). One of the outcomes included an array of new drilling machines. These human-powered tools were a vast improvement over earlier tools. This item is an example of a commonly used domestic tool - pre power tools.A Stanley hand drill with two wooden handles. Other products were He lived at 'Balmoral' in Albany Crescent, Surrey Hills; his woodwork was produced here. Family oral history has that he took up woodcarving after his 1st wife, Annie, died in 1893. His earliest known piece is a music cabinet of 1901; the latest is a panel of 1932 when Blogg was 81 years of age. He was a member of the Victorian Artists Society and exhibited there between 1920 and 1924. Much of his work incorporates motifs of Australian flora, particularly gum leaves. John and his family were members of St Stephen's Presbyterian Church, Surrey Hills. The present church building was dedicated in December 1910 and J K Blogg's contribution to the new building was the Hogg Memorial pulpit which is comprised of 13 panels. Blogg carved more than 300 pieces for churches, schools, royalty, family and friends. Many of J K Blogg's pieces remain with family members, but he is represented in municipal (City of Whitehorse), state and national collections. In addition to work in the St Stephen's Presbyterian Church within the Surrey Hills area his work was produced for Surrey Hills Primary School, Surrey Hills Bowling Club and Surrey Hills Methodist Church, however perhaps his most famous local work is the honour board at the Shrine in the Surrey Gardens. The Breeden family came to Surrey Hills in 1905, first to Guildford Road, then Middlesex Road where Horrie Breeden lived as a boy. He sometimes used to help with milking at the adjoining Kenneally's dairy in Highfield Road. Sometimes he and his brother drove the cows from there to Schneider's property near Florence Road on the way to Surrey Hills Primary School. The cows would graze here until the boys took them back after school. At other times he would deliver milk from the Croydon Road dairy (Isherwood's or Bovill's) to St Joseph's Boys Home before school. George Smith came to Wodonga c.1885 and carried on a business as a blacksmith and wheelwright in Hume Street. He subsequently erected the very substantial Federal Coach Factory in High Street. In 1901 the Coach Factory was sold to Mr C. E. Jones, but within three or four years George Smith again found himself in the establishment he had built. In 1907/8 Marcus Buntz partnered by a G. F. Simpson took possession of the Federal Coach Factory. In 1912 Buntz bought out the interest of Simpson and engaged a first-class wheelwright to do the woodwork. In 1912 a buggy could be had from £40 and a sulky £18. The business over many years developed from a shoeing forge and wheelwright business to a more modern day garage, keeping abreast with mechanisation. Marcus Buntz was joined in the business by his three sons, George, an A grade mechanic, Edward an auto-electrician and Henry, a blacksmith’s striker. The sons eventually took over the garage and handled both coach building and general service work. The firm also maintained the Wodonga Water Pump for many years, ensuring the town’s water supply. In 1948 the old established motor garage was purchased by Mr Jack Mylon. In July 1960 the building became Wodonga Market, housing a butcher, snack bar, milk bar, fruit and veg, Bill Dunstan’s Boat Centre and an Auction Mart. Inge Cammans was born Ingenborg Flachs on 13 March 1932 in the Netherlands. She married Theodore Cammans on 27 April 1959 in Valkenburg. Inge was a dressmaker, and Theo a butcher. Later that year they emigrated to Canada, then in the mid 1960’s arrived in Australia. After arriving in Australia, they settled in East Gippsland. After some time in Sale, they moved to the small country town of Buchan and for two years they operated the local butcher shop and then took over the kiosk at Buchan Caves Reserve, which they ran for 13 years while raising their four children. Around 1980 they retired to the main street of Buchan. There they bought and restored the "Callemondah" property and opened a small craft and gallery space called the Buchan Black Marble Hut to display and sell Theo’s beautiful woodwork, stone craft and paintings. Although they were quite busy with the tourist trade, Inge fast became restless and borrowed a spinning wheel from a friend to try out. She taught herself how to spin and knit over the course of two months. From there, Inge went on to win a vast array of awards for her knitting - the house was full of walls upon walls covered in certificates, sashes, newspaper articles and pennants. She never used dye and only ever worked with natural wool, and would regularly travel out to the local farms to choose the colour of sheep she wanted. She would take the fleece to spin and then design and knit, crochet or latch hook every item from scratch, often inspired by techniques from dressmaking, and make knitted garments appear or behave the same way, despite its very different construction. This outfit was made by Inge in 1998. She was intrigued to figure out how to create the kilt pleats, the plaid pattern and the structure of the head piece. It was never intended to be worn out and about. She did knit items to wear, gift or sell, but the vast majority of her creative pieces were specifically intended as show submissions. This outfit was entered in the National Wool Awards competition in 1999 and won first prize. Hand knitted cream and brown outfit consisting of a skirt (kilt), jumper, hat (beret), scarf, socks and bag. Outfit is made using hand spun wool from local East Gippsland area, Perendale and Mohair.
