During World War I, Red Cross appeal badges (often called "tinnies" or button badges) were sold on streets, trams, and at rallies to raise money for wounded soldiers, prisoners of war, and hospital work. Citizens bought these small, cheap pin-back badges to show they had donated money to patriotic funds. There are three WW1 badges: two Red Cross badges : one oval shaped has Red Cross Appeal Sept.1918 lettering in black showing a nurse with a dog wearing a Red Cross blanket. The smaller badge has the lettering on a banner - Australian Red Cross Appeal 1918 and a white flag with a red cross. Badges such as this one were issued to soldiers by the Department of Defence to indicate they had returned from active service. It showed they had helped the war effort by serving their country. Sometimes returned soldiers were wrongfully accused of showing disloyalty to their country because they were not seen wearing a military uniform so wearing the badge helped avoid this. A number was often stamped on the reverse and a certificate was provided as authentication. The inclusion of 2 Turkish buttons and the possibility of the belt itself being Turkish seems to indicate that the belt was obtained at Gallipoli. As some of the other badges and buttons are not of Australian origin, the indication is that they were traded during the owner's service.This item is significant in that it has original badges and buttons from uniforms of WWI. This collection belonged to Sister Tessa Thomas R.R.M. (Nee Youngman) Sister Thomas was born at Creswick 1882, died Brisbane 1948. She trained at the Alfred Hospital for 3 years from 1909. On the 28th November 1914, as a staff nurse she embarked on the "Shyarra" from Australia and served at the 1st Australian General Hospital, Egypt.
