Ada Lyon, nee Apted (1898-1962) was a member of the Eltham War Memorial Trust which in 1945 decided that a WW2 memorial in Eltham should include a baby health centre, a children's library and a pre-school centre. Ada Lyon worked tirelessley as a member of the women's auxiliary to raise funds for the memorial. The third and final stage of the Memorial was opened in November 1961. Following her death the following year; a memorial sundial was erected in recogintion of her work for the War Memorial Trust. Words on the plaque read: "To the memory of Mrs Ada Lyon in recognition of her work for this Trust".The sundial recognising the local contribution of Ada Lyon is of local historical significance in not only recognising a woman for her contributions during an era when women were generally unrecognised publically but is also a reminder to current generations of her work and that of her peers to iniate the war memorial in honour of local enlistments in WW2.Roll of 35mm colour negative film, 10 strips. A publication to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the WW2 Commando memorial at Tidal River on Wilsons Promontory, Victoria, where the first Commando units trained. Wilsons Promontory is regarded as the birthplace of the Australian and New Zealand WW2 Commandos.An annual service is conducted each November at the Tidal River WW2 Commando memorial. Since almost all of the WW2 Commando veterans have passed, the annual service is now conducted by the post-WW2 Australian Commando Association Victoria. The WW2 Commando Association disbanded in 2010. While there are some references from time to time to a war memorial fund in both Mission Annual reports from the 1930s and news clippings the actual organisation has not been well researched. More information is needed about formation and member details. As the board primarily was designed for WW1 it may have fallen out of use post WW2. This War memorial fund may have been superseded by a national organisation see links above. JM 2020.The Katoomba crews led by Captain E. The original idea to create a monument was conceived by William Cameron. The monument was first constructed of cement block tiles and was a memorial to all those who served in WW1. Later gates were added to the precinct in memory of those who served in WW2. Restoration of the Memorial took place in 1995, with the original tiles being replaced by replaced by re-inforced concrete. Mt Macedon Memorial Cross is a significant War Memorial in the district. ANZAC Day dawn service is held at the Mt Macedon Cross, it is an impressive setting.Glazed precast cement block coloured to resemble sandstone, mounted on wooden stand. This 1954 Roll of Honour board was an action of the WW2 Eltham War memorial Trust, for hanging in their Child Welfare Centre building on their property in Main Road, Eltham. The Johnstons Furniture Production Company made up the board and had the names of the local Eltham enlistees applied in gold lettering at a total cost of £13.10.00. The names were copied by the Eltham RSL from the obelisk which was first erected by the WW1 Eltham Peace Celebrations in August 1919 at the northwest corner of Bridge Street and Main Road. During road widening plans by the Council, the obelisk was moved to the garden area of the refurbished RSL branch building in Main Road for safekeeping. The Honour Roll Board was sent to the Eltham RSL sub-branch around 1999. Following the merger of the Eltham and Montmorency sub-branches and sale of the Eltham property, the obelisk was relocated to a location in front of the Eltham War Memorial. The Honour Roll Board was retrieved by former Eltham District Historical Society President, Harry Gilham in September 2004 who arranged for it to be hung in the Eltham War Memorial Hall (former Children's Library). The little boy's father worked for a gold mining company in Malaya. The boy and his mother made it out of Malaya to Bendigo safely. The father volunteered by joining the 4th Pahang Bn of the Federated States of Malaya, serial no 13428 and his rank was Sgt. He was a POW, worked on the Burma railway. The father, Desmond Vandergrift Giblin survived the War. Desmond Vandergrift Giblin has letters and his diary on the Aust War Memorial website.This is a pocket sized memo book. Mottled blue cover with white printing. The spine is dark blue. The cover is hard cardboard. Inside are numerous lined pages. The pages in the first section are used as a scrap book showing news clippings about fund raising for our POW's (Red Cross). 1st clipping shows a little boy, Ian Desmond Giblin, aged 2 yr 10 mth. His father was a POW in Malaya.
