(MV)This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. The Municipality of Kew was granted independence in 1860. It was declared a borough in 1863, a town in 1910 and a city in 1921. In 1994, Kew was amalgamated into the new City of Boroondara. In 1960, a new Town Hall in Cotham Road was opened. The Municipal Offices that had remained in the former Town Hall in Walpole Street until it was moved to the new Civic Centre on the corner of Cotham Road and Charles Street in 1972.This is a rare and important colour photograph of the Kew Municipal Offices (former Town Hall) taken on 11/2/1972 in the year that the building was demolished and replaced by a Safeway Supermarket.Colour photographic positive (polaroid) of the front of the (former) Kew Town Hall in Walpole Street between High Street and Malmsbury Street, on the west side where Woolworth's supermarket now stands. The photograph, taken in February 1972, shows the detailing of the Italianate rendered-brick facade, added in the 1880s when the hall was renovated. The earliest building on the site was the Kew Athenaeum Hall (built 1860) which was purchased by Kew Council in 1865. A brown wooden award depicting a relief of an award with an image of black and white lawn bowls and a white jack on a green background. At the top of the board is an engraved plate that reads "Canberra Shield Indoor Bias Bowls for the Blind National Championships" with separate scroll work images of flowers and ferns at the top left and right hand edges. The relief sits in front of the top plate, whilst underneath are individual engraved plates for each years winners, with six plates not completed. At the base, in the middle, is another larger plate with the inscription "Most Outstanding Individual Performance". A special luncheon was held for World War I widows as a lead up to "Legacy Week". Legatees dressed up as moustached waiters to add a bit of humour to the day. Due to its success it was held for a number of years. This is 1994 as the author Patsy Adam Smith was a guest and she was the Personality of the Year in 1994 and helped promote Legacy during Legacy Week. The photo of her and L/- Eddie Jowett also appeared in the October edition of the Answer. The WWI group would meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 11 at Legacy House for many years until their numbers dwindled. A special luncheon was held for World War 1 widows as a lead up to "Legacy Week". Legatees dressed up as moustached waiters to add a bit of humour to the day. Due to its success it was held for a number of years. In 1994 the author Patsy Adam-Smith was a personality of the year helping to promote Legacy. She attended the lunch and in one photo is with Legatee Eddie Jowett and widow Mollie Thiele (red jacket). Legatee Eddie Jowett led the Legatees in singing to the widows. There was also a pianist and a female singer attending. Two legatees reading a song sheet are George Standish and Maurie Lockwood. Legatee Lucky Luscombe can be seen in a false moustache posing for the camera. Also a photo of the hard work being done in the kitchen. Audrey the kitchen lady is obscured at far right. It appears to be Joan Miller with her back to the camera, and Sue Sargent (a widow who helped a lot in the kitchens) is on the right hand side. Other ladies names in the photos are not known. The following year more Legatees followed Lucky's lead and wore false moustaches to provide entertainment. The article in The Answer in April 1997 announced that Daryl Somers would be the personality of the year for the Badge Appeal for the second year. He was photographed speaking at Legacy House and with people including Hazel McKean. Hazel was the wife of a VC winner. Also in the photos are Elaine Ward and Lynne Scott who's family had been used to promote Legacy in a 1994. The article mentions the importance of widows helping raise funds by selling a "Card Pack" a small packet of badges which they sell to family and friends. Two Brighton Grammar Junior School boys with President John Stevenson and a plaque of appreciation. For many year the boys from Brighton Grammar Junior School raised money from the sale of Legacy badges and the President would present them with a plaque of appreciation. Between 1991and 1995 the boys raised in excess of $16,000. These two boys are David Menre and Nathan Scuderi as recounted in the February 1994 edition of The Answer.
