Historical information

The photograph was taken on one of Quinn's early trips to New York, and, with the letters he wrote at this time, records his fascination with American culture.
This photograph was exhibited by the Mission to Seafarers as part of the exhibition "Letters from Abroad" in 2012.

Significance

This is a photograph from the Allan Charles Quinn collection which is a collection of letters and photograph depicting aspects of life at sea for a young man in the era immediately following World War II.

Black and white photograph of the Statue of Liberty in New York. The photograph has been taken standing at the base of the statue, looking upwards.

Inscriptions & markings

On reverse: STATUE OF LIBERTY / 30.8.47 handwritten in black ink. Below this is an upside down D, and a small blue ink mark in the left hand corner.
