Equipment, Leather School Strap, c1920

Historical information

The early use of the school strap is associated with Catholic boys junior boarding schools in Ireland. Some were made from two pieces of leather stitched together with a coin sewn into the striking end.

It is thought the Federation University Strap was used at the Ballarat Junior Technical School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines.

Physical description

A laminated piece of brown leather with shaped end designed to use as a handle. It is a school strap used to administer corporal punishment.
