The plug (obturator) could be used to apply medication to the mouth of the cervix. Wooden speculums were in use in the second half of the 19th century, before it became commonplace for speculums to be made of metal.

Henry Galante was a French instrument maker active from the late 1800s.

Speculum consisting of wooden case and introducer. "Galante" inscribed on lower side of case and "2" near the top of the case.
