On 21 March 1923, in the presence of 10,000 people, on the City Beach Oval, Sandringham was declared a City by the Earl of Stradbroke. Sandringham was originally part of the Shire of Moorabbin. On 28 February 1917, Sandringham was severed from Moorabbin and incorporated as the Borough of Sandringham. It was proclaimed a Town on 9 April 1919 and a City on 21 March 1923.
Physical description
Compilation of five sepia photographs of activities relating to the proclamation of the City of Sandringham, 21 March 1923. In the top three photographs Lord Stradbroke appears on the stage with the Mayor, Cr J.P.D. Beck. In the centre photograph Cr Beck presents Lord Stradbroke with an illuminated manuscript from the citizens of Sandringham. In the middle row, Lord and Lady Stradbroke meet Mr. Angelo Bertotto, the district's oldest resident (man in centre with beard). In the bottom photograph, a large crowd gathers on the City Beach Oval, many waving City of Sandringham flags.
