Historical information

On 21 March 1923, in the presence of 10,000 people, on the City Beach Oval, Sandringham was declared a City by the Earl of Stradbroke. Sandringham was originally part of the Shire of Moorabbin. On 28 February 1917, Sandringham was severed from Moorabbin and incorporated as the Borough of Sandringham. It was proclaimed a Town on 9 April 1919 and a City on 21 March 1923.

Compilation of five sepia photographs of activities relating to the proclamation of the City of Sandringham, 21 March 1923. In the top three photographs a tall man wearing a top hat (Lord Stradrboke) appears on the stage with the Mayor (Cr. J.E.D. Beck) who, in the middle photograph, presents him with an illuminated manuscript. In the middle row, Lord and Lady Stradbroke meet Mr. Angelo Bertotto, the district's oldest resident (man in centre with beard). In the bottom photograph, a large crowd gathers on the City Beach Oval.
