Physical description

A large handmade wooden barrel shaped headed maul with two steel bands at each end and a wooden handle. It was used to split logs or timber particularly hardwoods using a wedge as shown in the media photo. The rectangular steel wedge has a pointed end which is damaged. It was used in the late 19th Century.
