Historical information

Mernda Primary School 488 was established in 1853, under the name Plenty National School. The first classes were held in a barn at Carome Homestead, located on the banks of the Plenty River. By October 1853 a new schoolhouse was erected on 2 acres of land donated by Moses Thomas, on a site further south along Plenty Road. In 1858, a new one roomed wooden schoolhouse was erected in bluestone foundations at a cost of 200 pounds. The school's name was changed to 488 Morang and changed again in 1913 to 488 Mernda.
