The Paynesville Maritime Museum has a collection of tools which were used to make and repair boats.

The tools are from several sources including local boat builders and their families.

Boat-builders use the irons to push caulking cotton ito the seams between the planks of the hull to prevent water leaking in

The drawing board was used to prepare drawings of the parts of the boat so the boat-builders knew what to make.

Spokeshaves were used to shape and smooth wood.

Tenon saws were used to produce precise cuts in wood.

Planes were used to finish wood, smoothing the surface, removing tool marks, and helping pieces of wood to fit together.

The tenon saw is used for fine cutting, usually across the grain of the timber

Fair condtion

Sometimes called a keyhole or sabre saw (because of its shape) this saw is limited to light work as the blade easily buckles. However it has many uses in odd locations that other saws cannot achieve.

Alternatively called a coping or fret saw this saw has a blade that enables curves to be cut. The blade can also be rotated in the end fittings. The modern equivalent is the jigsaw.

Jig for holding a saw in the vice whilst it is being sharpened. Tools are a file to sharpen and a bending gauge to "set" the saw teeth alternately each side of the centreline.

After a chisel has its cutting point ground (on the grinding wheel) the edge is honed on an oilstone. The wooden box is to prevent dirt getting onto the stone and to keep the stone moist with oil. Also used for plane blades and knives etc.
