Historical information
Sturdy cast iron and later, aluminium ladles were useful for scooping food or serving soup. Cast iron ladles were used as industrial tools too, by blacksmiths and for other uses. Nowadays they are for decorative display. Aluminium ladles became common in the 1940's - 1970's as they were more affordable. Care had to be taken when cooking with acidic foods such as tomatoes and vinegar as pitting could result.
