A one page document on the history SS 4180 Ringwood East. In 1916 a petition signed by 33 residents was presented to the Minister of Education by Mr J Rouget M.L.A. stating the need for a school at Ringwood East. The District Inspector Mr A.N. Barry recommended a full time school for 75 to 100 children. The building was commenced in 1923. A second 3 page document on the history of the school written by J Hookey and states the 4 acre site was purchased from Mr Ted Lindsay for somewhere between 200 and 300 pounds. A.E. Wieland of Camberwell erected the the school at a cost to the Department of 2,227 pounds. It was opened on July 7th 1924 by the Head Teacher Mr Walter Whittle. 59 pupils were enrolled. Arthur Meyland was the first pupil enrolled. By 1969 the school consisted of 15 classrooms and a central library.

Summary: The article covers a dispute sparked by comments made in a Croydon West Primary School newsletter. Principal John Martyn criticised parents for sending children across busy roads rather than to his school after the decision to close Ringwood East Primary. Ringwood councillor Chris McRae condemned Martyn’s remarks, calling them unfair to Ringwood East families and arguing that parents were simply choosing the nearest school. 3 articles relating to attempts to save the historic buildings, including by Ringwood Council to Historic Buildings Trust. One building is a red brick classroom built in 1924. The other is a 1950 pre-fabricated classroom built by the Bristol Aircraft Company (11721-1).

Summary: A fire destroyed a block of 10 former classrooms at the old East Ringwood Primary School site around 3 a.m., causing about $200,000 in damage. Detectives, including Senior Detective Boyd McKittrick, believe the blaze was deliberately lit, noting several smaller fires around the grounds. Two Ringwood firefighters received minor injuries while containing the blaze. The site had been sold just a week earlier to Wilbow Peck Corporation, whose general manager Robert Boscarato said the damaged building was already scheduled for demolition and the area would now be cleared for safety.
