Col Sir George Lansell, WW1 Veteran, President of the Bendigo RSL Sub Branch conceived the idea to erect in a central location a cenotaph to perpetuate the memory of Australian Servicemen who had given their lives in Battle.
With the assistance of the then Agent General for Victoria in London the Hon Sir John Lienhop Sir George approached Lady Emily Lutyens - trustee in her late Husbands estate, Sir Edwin Lutyens who designed the cenotaph for permission to erect a monument on similar lines in Bendigo. Permission was readily granted.
