Historical information

The thermometer was used to test butterfat content of milk using either the Gerber Method or the Babcock Test by Bill A'Vard in his teens (circa 1940's). He used to go to the farms by horse and cart. As part of the process the the thermometer was used to stir the flasks until reached 112 deg F.

Significance

The object is historically significant as the A'Vard family were pioneers of the area who came to selected land in The Dandenong Ranges in 1898.

Physical description

Thermometer using mercury with paper scale from 0 to 230 degrees Fahrenheit on which is printed 'Floating Dairy Thermometer' and stamped 'MADE IN GERMANY.'. The thermometer is housed in a substantial brown cardboard cylinder stamped “THERMOMETER FRAGILE GUARENTEED”
