Historical information

Carl Axel Nobelius 1851-1921, was a Swedish migrant who started the Gembrook Nurseries in 1892 which at their peak (just before WWI) were the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere.He was renowned as a nurseryman and was a significant employer in Emerald.Trees from his nursery were bought by the Melbourne Botanic Gardens and inner city Melbourne municipalities for their parks and gardens as well as by councils and individuals throughout Australia and the world. This photographic portrait is part of a pair - the other being of Carl's wife, Emily Jane Nobelius. The photographer, Alice Mills, was a significant woman photographer in business from 1900 to 1920.
