Historical information

Emerald was a gathering place for some Australian writers in the early 20th century. Vance and his wife Nettie Palmer were two such writers. In addition to their literary works, they were remembered for their great compassion and generosity. Vance Palmer's novels wrote between 1920 and 1959.In 1919, the couple rented Rose Charman's Cottage in Emerald from the writer, Katharine Susannah Prichard.

Significance

Vance and Netty Palmer advocated for the recognition of Australian literature as a subject worthy of serious study and teaching.
