The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regimental Collection is staffed by volunteers from the Regimental Association and contains documents, photographs and objects relating to citizen soldiers from Northeast Victoria and date from the late nineteenth century through to the present day.

Badge

8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regimental Collection, North Bandiana

Metal badge featuring crossed semaphore flags. Awarded to qualified signaller and worn on the right sleeve of the tunic between elbow and wrist band.

Significance

Example of a military skills insignia worn by an Australian soldier in WWI (1914-1918).

Badge

8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regimental Collection, North Bandiana

Two lapel badges pinned to a piece of paper with a handwritten notation. One is a Demobilised Soldiers badge issued to new recruits training in Australia at the time of the Armistice on 11 November 1918 or those who had enlisted but had not yet been called into camp for training, and the other a Volunteer Home Service Badge issued to employees of the Department of Defence who had volunteered for active service abroad but who had been denied due to their services being required in Australia. .

Historical information

These badges were almost certainly issued to Leslie Samuel Woods of Albury who enlisted 10 May 1915 having completed first year medicine at Melbourne University. He served a year at the Convalescent Hospital, Harefield UK, before being ordered home to complete his medical studies. He would have completed his studies near the end on 1918 and attempted to re-enlist but had not entered training before the Armistice. Doctor Leslie Woods was a General Practitioner in Albury till his death. He is buried in Albury Waugh Road Cemetery.

Significance

Well provenanced object illustrating the WWI experience of a young Albury man.

Badge

8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regimental Collection, North Bandiana

Three SInn Fein Irish badges mounted on black mount including cap badge of Dublin Brigade IRA at left. Other badges not identified. Collected as a souvenir by William Rutledge while recovering from wounds sustained in 1918 while serving with 35th Battalion AIF and form part of a collection of memorabilia.

Historical information

Captain William Robert Rutledge volunteered for the AIF 25 June 1917 as an 18 year-old farm labourer of Hay NSW. He served as No 6935 with 35th Battalion on Western Front; wounded in action April 1918; Returned to Australia March 1919. Served in 21st Light Horse Regiment (CMF) between the wars. Second AIF rank service as NX 112296 12 September 1942 – 4 October 1946, in 26 Work Company with rank of Captain.

Significance

Unusual souvenirs acquired by soldier from rural NSW while serving in WWI and now part of a collection of his memorabilia.

Belt

8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regimental Collection, North Bandiana

Five coloured 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles stable belt with two leather fastening straps and metal buckles. Belt contains the colours of the 8th Light Horse Regiment, blue and yellow, 13th Light Horse Regiment, red and white, and 20th Light Horse Regiment, purple and yellow.

Historical information

Regimental stable belts were worn with Howard Green jumper. The were introduce as uniform in late 1970s and withdrawn from use in 1995. Each regiment had a belt of distinctive colours.

Significance

Fine example of item of apparel worn by Australian soldiers in 1980s, one of few colourful items of uniform in modern times.

Black felt beret with silver Rising Sun hat badge as worn by 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles 1950 - 1952.

Historical information

The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. In 1977 8/13 VMR Regiment was reduced to an independent squadron A Squadron 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles and in 1991 was linked with 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse forming the VMR Squadron of that regiment.

Significance

Representative of headdress worn by Citizen Military Forces soldiers in nearly 1950s.

8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regimental Collection, North Bandiana

Metal bit being part of a Light Horse bridle brought home from the Western Front by Trooper William John Ronan 13th Light Horse Regiment AIF.

Historical information

3234 Trooper William Ronan, a farmer of Tallangatta Victoria, served with the 13th Light Horse Regiment on Gallipoli, in Egypt and on the Western Front from 1915-1919. On his return to Australia he brought with him this bit as a memento of his service and his horse.

Significance

An historical object of spiritual significance to its owner William Ronan. Well provenanced and representative of the equipment of Australian Light Horse in World War One.

Hard back bound book with grey heavy paper dust cover; 170 pages, some coloured plates. Written and Illustrated by the men of Anzac. Published "For the benefit of the Patriotic Funds connected with the A.N.Z.A.C., by Cassell and Company Ltd London, New York, Toronto and Melbourne, 1916.

Historical information

These books became a wartime best seller raising substantial funds for Comforts Funds. It was a commo item in households in Australia. They are not rare so condition is important to collections.

Significance

Example of early WWI war literature written and illustrated by serving soldiers.

Historical information

6th Light Horse Regiment was raised in New South Wales in 1914 and served at Gallipoli, Sinai, Palestine and Syria. The regiment wore wallaby skin hat bands instead of cloth puggarees, hence the reference to furred hats.

Significance

A rare first edition of a regimental history. It was told and published immediately after the war so gives an authentic and unvarnished account of the experience of a relatively small group of young men from New South Wales during their four years at war.

Hardback book, 551 pages being a report compiled by the Office of the Secretary, Department of Defence, from information furnished by Heads of Branches and Commandants of Military Districts.

Historical information

A comprehensive report of the Australian military, permanent, citizen (CMF) and expeditionary (AIF) forces during the first three years of the First World war (1914-18).

Significance

A rare volume documenting the state of Australia's defences after three years of war. It is an historic and useful document when viewed alongside the official history of the WWI conflict.

Black clothboard covered bank book issued by the National Bank of Australasia Limited, Benalla Branch for the account of the 16th Light Horse Public Monies Account. The book was in use from December 1912 to March 1919.

Historical information

The 16th Light Horse Regiment was a Citizen Military Force unit located in North East Victoria with its Headquarters at Benalla. The regiment came into existence as part of a reorganisation of Australian Military Forces in 1912 replacing earlier Victorian Mounted Rifles units, and was in turn redesignated 8th Light Horse (Indi) Regiment in 1919.

Significance

A rare bank book detailing how a CMF regiment conducted its financial affairs in the pre-World War 1 (1914-1918) period.
