We have a collection of articles that come from homes and businesses in Anglesea. While there are some general articles we are trying to concentrate on local history. We have many household articles from early Anglesea homes.

Significance

Records and preserves history of the European settlement of the district. Our collection includes a small amount about the local aboriginal people, the Wautherong.

Ice Chest

A 'Mawson' hardwood two door wooden ice chest lined with galvanised iron lining, and original catches and hinges. (Restored by Malcolm McDougall who replaced the back, base and top before varnishing with walnut varnish).

Cigarette Case

White metal cigarette case inscribed 'JLB' in black - mid top front. Simple etched pattern in metal - front and back. It has a hinged opening with elasticised holder for cigarettes. "From Max" inscribed on inside front.

Receipt from Anglesea Bowling Club to Mrs. J. Murch for a 4 year subscription paid in advance. It is stamped and signed: Victorian Stamp Duty by L. McMahon. Letter attached from Anglesea Bowling Club explains that the Bowling Club will be open for play on 10th December 1961 and play will begin at 1.45 pm.

Brass lozenge 'standard' apothecary weight. Front: Lion standing on a crown in centre with registration symbols on either side. "STANDARD" curved around top with "A. & T. A" below. Reverse: Apothecary symbol in centre with number above and unit below - both in words. All in a beaded border. 3 = DRAM = exactly 1.771 845 195 3125 grams.

Sea Mine

Metal sea mine casing manufactured for use in WW2 that has since been converted for domestic use as an incinerator - spherical body now quite rusty and bottom layer of lid quite corroded around entire circumference - has two handles attached to upper section of shell and holes and metal fittings between them - small hole in centre of lid.

Golliwog doll (sitting)

Golliwog dolls were enormously popular in the first half of the 20th Century but became socially incorrect during the civil rights era of the 1960's. A lot of people had them in their childhood and remember them with affection. The stories of "Little Black Sambo" and "Epaminondas" similarly were books loved by children but have disappeared from the shelves for the same reason.

Medal - Coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra

Anglesea and District Historical Society, Anglesea

Medal struck on a shield-shaped flan with a crown and loop at the top. The coronation of Edward VII in 1902 prompted major celebrations in Australia. This medal probably issued to school children in Victoria. Over 40 different medals were produced in Victoria.

Wooden toy of soldier riding a horse, on 4 wheels. Body of horse painted white; soldier has red jacket, blue trousers and black boots and hat; wheels painted red; fibre mane and tail. Soldier's limbs are jointed at body, so soldier appears to be riding horse when toy is pulled along by cord at front.
