The shields represent the five tribes of the Gunnai/Kurnai, they’re all connected, you can’t break up the mob. The designs are relevant today because the Gunnai/Kurnai just got native title as custodians. Our shield designs are coming out in community artwork as people feel proud and safer to promote Gunnai/Kurnai culture. The shield design I feel closest to, is the Bratalulung as it is from the Yallourn area where I was born. The Krautungulung shield relates to my brother as he was born in Bairnsdale. Gradually through life things fall into place: where our cultural materials are once again being promoted rather than denied.
