Functional object - Spectacles and case, Early 20th century
These glasses appear to be mainly sunglasses or ones for outdoors as the tinted glass and the shades indicate this. They would have been used commonly in the past (100 years ago or more) by those able to afford the cost of the item. Eye glasses were first used in the 13th century and bi-focals were invented in the late 18th century. These items have no known local significance and are kept as interesting souvenirs of eye glasses used in the past. This is a pair of spectacles or glasses in a case. The glasses are made of thin metal and contain dark tinted glass. The eye-glass pieces are oval in shape. On the outer rims of the eye-glass pieces are two curved metal mesh covers attached to the metal rims by two screws on each side. These act as shades for the sun and side protection for the eyes and fold down when not in use. One of the shades is detached from its metal rim. The glasses case is made of cardboard and has a black mottled outer covering and a light brown inside lining. The case is much scuffed. household items, history of warrnambool, spectacles -

Print - Lithoprint
This art work is an example of an Art Deco print created through lithoprint / lithograph techniques. As a print it would have been more affordable than an original artwork and hence could be purchased by a wider cliental. Little is known about the artist, but Jean Lasalle is listed as producing another print used by Tuck & Sons in their Oilette postcard series. This item is significant socially as an example of artwork that may have been displayed in homes around the 1910s- 1930s. The Oilette logo carries significance, linking the print to a business that was influential in the early production of postcards.Unframed print on board with some framing tacks still attached to the back of the board. Print area is in fair condition. The print has been stuck to a ‘paper frame' which has been attached to the backing board. The subject of the print is a lake view, with steep mountains in the background and two female figures on a bench in the foreground in the Art Deco style. Colours are muted. The print has the artist's signature 'Jean Lasalle' (looking at the print bottom left) and the words 'Oilette' (looking at the print bottom right) with a small logo composed of an oval and square underneath.flagstaff hill, warrnambool, maritime village, maritime museum, flagstaff hill maritime museum & village, shipwreck coast, great ocean road, lithoprint, lithograph, oilette, golden dawn, art deco, jean lasalle, print, day dream -

Watercolour painting by Charlie Hammond showing two train carriages at Belgrave Station. A group of people stand on the small platform beside the small station building which bears the sign 'Monbulk'. In the background are hilly paddocks. The most distant paddock has rows of what appear to be fruit trees. Below the painting Hammond has written '1901 Belgrave Station when it was Monbulk. Benson's Hill in the background. Later – Biffin's and later still – Harper's Guest House. Typical of all the stations along the line. Govt. had not recovered from the land boom and could not afford to build better ones.' The care of children was a major part of Legacy work in the 1950s, many of whom would have lost their fathers in WWII. The minutes document the fostering of children by individual legatees, and their living conditions at Holmbush. It is clear that the children made do with whatever clothes could be afforded, and they were strongly encouraged to to study. Discipline was commensurate with what was acceptable at the time, and the children were expected to do their share of chores around the home.Complete set of minutes for the year 1955 with details of the children in care at Holmbush, their environment and activities.Foolscap typed sheets, black type on faded white paper 00279.1 26.1.1955 00279.2 7.2.1955 00279.3 8.3.1955 00279.4 20.4.1955 00279.5 26.5.1955 00279.6 27.6.1955 00279.7 26.7.1955 00279.8 13.8.1955 00279.9 7.9.1955 00279.10 10.10.1955 00279.11 10.11.1955 residences, holmbush initial negotiations, committee, holmbush -

Friends of Westgarthtown
Trunk/ Koffer, c. 1840s
The chest was constructed to allowable dimensions for storage in the ship's hold. The sturdy watertight construction afforded protection for the chests contents. It can be imagined that these would be household utensils, items of clothing and the most treasured ornaments as space permitted. It is likely that the contents included some building tools and as well, implements which Christian Ziebell used in his trade as a butcher in Bruel, thereby enabling him to undertake profitable work on his arrival in Australia. This object is of primary significance. The Koffer was constructed to allowable dimensions for storage in the ship’s hold. The sturdy watertight construction afforded protection for the Koffer’s contents on the voyage aboard the Privislaw from Hamburg, Germany to Hobsons Bay, Australia in 1850. The Koffer held the precious necessities for life for Christian Ziebell's family at their new destination. It is likely that the contents included some building tools as well, implements that Christian used in his trade as a butcher in Bruel, thereby enabling him to undertake profitable work on arrival in Australia. The wooden Koffer was airtight, so if lost overboard it would be retrievable. Some were fixed to the ship’s deck. After they settled at Westgarthtown the Koffer continued to contain the precious documents through each generation. Only the current owners saw the contents in each generation, and the children always regarded it as a “treasure chest”, which was always locked and out of bounds for them. Large wooden trunk/koffer. Base is rectangular, and lid is rectancular to fit the base but curves between the front and back. Morticed corners; protruding base with beveled edge. Supported by profiled runners with four built-in feet. Handle for carrying on each end, and locking mechanism on front.'C. Given its sturdy construction, this cane was primarily used as a support device and demonstrates how initially canes which were painted white, retained their existing colour on the crook. Functional object - Fishermans Cottage, Built in 1870/1880 for Thomas and Anna Ikin
This low-lying northern-most tip of Queenscliff saw its physical origins in 1863 with allotments let to a burgeoning fishing community previously accommodated on the site of the current railway station and whose construction in 1879 necessitated eviction. Among this community, Chinese fishermen are thought to be of the first international settlers. The success of the fishermen’s settlement was due in part to commercial trading prospects the railway afforded and the size of catch available to those fishing in Bass Strait. Salmon, snapper and particularly barracouta led to the success of the local industry.Original Fishermans Cottage previously located at Swan Bay end of Bridge Street Queenscliff.
