Hector Brickbill paid 100 guineas to the Ballarat School of mines to be admitted as a Student-Assistant as part of a course of instruction in Chemistry, Metallurgy, Geology, Mineralogy, Surveying and Electrical Science. The indenture was for a three year period and required the student-assistant to undertake 40 hours of diligent and faithful work at the Ballarat School of Mines. Not less than 24 hours per week was to be devoted to instruction such as lectures at The School, and not less than 20 hours was to be devoted to the service of The School upon duties in connection with the Laboratories and Museum under the direction of a Professor. Upon completion Hector Brickbill became an Associate of the Ballarat School of Mines, and could put the letters ASMB after his name. .1) Printed indenture document which has been folded in half. The Ballarat Teachers' College opened at Dana Street Primary School in 1926. From 1927-1931 it was conducted at the Ballarat East Town Hall. Returning to Dana Street Primary School in 1946 to 1955, and eventually was held in a costume built facility in Gillies street from 1955 to 1976. In 1976 pre-service teacher training was moved to the Ballarat College of Advanced Education at Mt Helen Campus. This image was hung in the corridor of the School of Education (Mount Helen). These images were hung in the corridor of the University of Ballarat School of Education (Mount Helen). It most probably dates from around the time of the transfer of the College. The Ballarat Teachers' College was established after the Victorian State Government and the State Education Department decided to establish two provincial teachers' colleges, at Ballarat and Bendigo. On 04 May 1926 W.H. Ellwood (Principal), Miss A. Bouchier, and Mr A.B. Jones, welcomed the first enrolment of 61 students to undertake the one year course. In 1927 the College moved to the former Ballarat East Town Hall in Barkly Street, which was remodelled for their use. It closed in December 1931 due to the Great Depression. In 1946 Ballarat Teachers' College reopened and relocated to the Dana Street State School. The building used by the Teachers' College was the original bluestone building facing Doveton Street South. It was originally planned to open as a women's college, for whom the residence at 130 Victoria Street was purchased, but the decision was made to admit resident men from Ballarat. Mr T.W. Turner was appointed as Principal in 1951 and directed the introduction of a two year course for the Trained Primary Teachers' Certificate. The former one year course was terminated at the end of 1951. In 1958 the College was relocated to a custom built facility at Gillies Street, in close proximity to the Ballarat Botanical Gardens. Numbers increased with the introduction of the Trained Infant Teachers' Certificate course under the guidance of Mary Egan. With the introduction of a three year Diploma Course in 1968 accommodation became cramped. The introduction of the Diploma of Teaching (Primary) led to the Trained Infant Teachers' Certificate being discontinued in 1969, and the end of the Trained Primary Teachers' Certificate in 1969. Secondary Art and Craft students began studies at Ballarat Teachers' College in 1969 under Mr Ted Doney. In 1971 Mr D. Watson was appointed Principal. The State College of Victoria was proclaimed by Order in Council on 24 July 1973, and Ballarat Teachers' College became a constituent college of the State College of Victoria, and was known as State College of Victoria, Ballarat. By 1975 the College moved to Mount Helen as part of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In the middle of the 1950s a project was launched to appoint a chaplain to Ballarat's three technical school - Ballarat Junior Technical School, Ballarat Girls' Technical School and Ballarat North Technical School. A Committee was formed at a public meeting on 13 March 1957 - Ballarat Technical Schools Chaplaincy Committee. They needed to raise 1250 Pounds from contributions raised by the schools This was the required amount to pay the annual salary for a chaplain. Response was excellent and in December 1957 a cheque for 1266 Pounds, 4 Shillings and 5 Pence was sent to The Council for Christian Education in Schools. On 28 May 1958, Rev Norman Lee was commissioned as the Chaplain of the Ballarat Technical Schools at a service in the Civic Hall, conducted by the Very Rev, Sir Francis Rolland, with the Director, Major-General A H Ramsay, representing the Education Department. Working over three schools and the need for the Committee to raise 1200 Pounds each year, put a lot of pressure on resources. Letter sent with two photographs. Please find enclosed a couple of photos taken in Ballarat in 1962 which came from an album of my mother's Marian Mitchell (nee Robinson). She and some friends were on a road trip across Victoria to New South Wales. You are welcome to reprint these. One is of the Ballarat Rodeo and the other is of mum in the morning at their roadside camp in Ballarat. The sign on the shed has two words, the first one says Caledonia - the second perhaps you'll be able to find out? Both taken in 1962. I hereby give you permission for your society to re-print and distribute both these photos as you choose (although these aren't exactly the most expertly taken pictures). If more come our way over the course of my continued cleaning out of the cupboards I will send these too.
