Booklet, Report on the Viability of Establishing a Post Secondary Education Facility Located at the Aradale Traininf Centre, Ararat, Victoria, 1993, 12/1993
Aradale is located 3 km from the centre of Ararat and covers approximately 101 hectares. It consistes of an impresive group of mainly heritage buildings of national significance surrounded by open farmland. Aradale was designed in 1864 in the Victorian Italianate style by John James Clark of the Public Works Department, Victoria. A three storey nurses quarters was built in the 1930s and the Forensic Psychaitry Centre was established in the 1980s. The design of asylums as a specific building type orginated in England in the mddle of the 19th century when it was decided that 'pauper lunatics' would be better cared for in a separate institution rather than being house within the workhouses. Some of the early purpose built asylums were based on the radiating principle of prisons but the arrangement of separat wings at right angles used in hospitals and whorkhouse design soon came to be seen as the most appropriate. The largest 19th century asylum in England was built at Colney Hatch. Kew, Beechworth and Ararat Asylums closely followed the Colney Hatch model. In victoria the population rose due to the gold rushes resulting in severe housing shortages, and additional pressure on asylums. The first asylum in Melbourne was established at Y arra Bend. In 1862 a new asylum was established at Kew. Ararat Asylum and Beechworth Asylum were designed in 1864. Ararat was opened on 19 October 1867, with Beechworth Asylum opening five days later. Medal, 1869 (exact); Made prior to November 1869
This medal is one of only a few medals donated by a group of generous gentlemen as tokens of their appreciation of the talent and industry of high achieving students in the years 1869 - 1870. The medal was awarded to Charles J Henderson when he completed his Matriculation Examination at the very young age of 13 years. The 1869 College annual report states that this examination, which granted entry into Melbourne University, was held in Ballarat for the first time in 1869. Candidates had to pass in at least six of the nine possible subjects in order to pass. Charles Henderson (born 3/02/1856) was the eldest son of the Rev. William Henderson of St Anderw's Kirk, Ballarat, distinguished founder of Ballarat College. Charles was only the third student enrolled at Ballarat College in July 1864. The Ballarat College annual report 1869 states the medal was awarded in appreciation of his 'success in passing so creditably the Matriculation examination at the age of thirteen years'. This medal has historic significance because it dates from the first decade of the history of the College. It has social significance because the recipient was the third student enrolled at Ballarat College, the eldest son of the founder of the College. The medal is unique and is one of only a few privately donated between 1869-1870 by a group of gentlemen affiliated with the college. This gold-plated round-shaped medal has front embossed with Minerva head, name of school and school motto. The rear of the medal is inscribed with names of medal donors. There is a straight metal pin hinged to the right side of the rear of the medal. There is a small catch attached to left side of the rear of the medal. The side edge of the medal is inscribed with name of the recipient and title of the award. The medal is housed in a rectangular cardboard box and nestled in cotton wool. The box has a blue lid and white base.Embossed around inner edge of medal front "Studiis Claritudo Venit. Document - Certificate of Competency, Marine Department, Commonwealth Council for Trade, 1883-1894
Fifteen year old Albert Edward Gill was born in Poplar, Middlesex, in 1868. He volunteered in May 1883 as an Apprentice Ordinary Seaman with the Merchant Services under the London shipping company James P. Corry & Co., owner of the Star Line. The shipping company by this time had a fleet of both clipper and steam cargo ships that sailed as far away as Australia and New Zealand. Gill’s apprenticeship was a four year unpaid term, with only his food, drink, lodgings, washing and medical needs provided for him. The contract had many conditions but it was a wonderful opportunity for a young man. His father James Gill signed the papers as his guarantor. In December 1887 Gill completed his apprenticeship and qualified as an Able Seaman. He served for another seven years with James P. Corry & Co. and earned his Certificate of Competency as a Master in the Merchant Service in April 1894, having passed the Ordinary Examination. (The transcription of Gill's two certificates is provided further down this page.) JAMES P. CORRY & CO. - The Belfast Company was formed in 1826 by Robert Corry, and imported timber from Canada to Ireland. In 1859 the company expanded to import timber from Calcutta, and relocated its offices to London. In the 1880s the company had a fleet of 13 tall clipper ships and included ports in Australia and New Zealand in its destinations. It continued to expand trade even further and by 1908 the Star Line had seven cargo steamers trading with the East and Far East (the ships were named Star of Australia, Star of Japan, Star of England, Star of New Zealand, Star of Ireland, Star of Scotland and Star of Victoria). In 1912 the Star Line ships added an emigrant service to Australia.
