Newspaper cutting from The Courier, Ballarat, Saturday 19/9/1992, page 27, written by Seaton Ashton about the history of trams in Ballarat on the 20th anniversary of their closure. Notes horse trams, ESCo, opening of lines, tram car builders, their rehabilitation in the 1930's, the involvement of the BTPS, trams 1 and 12. Has two photos, one of tram 27 sitting outside the SEC depot carrying the "This tram has just completed 1,000,000 miles in Ballarat" and one of tram 31, east bound in Bridge St. bound for Victoria St. dropping off a passenger at a stop. Both picture from the Courier Archives. Item in the Courier's "Saturday Magazine". Album comprises heavy cardboard covers with brown Rexene covers, with inside papers of heavy dark grey photo album paper, 36 leaves of dark grey photo paper and two brass interscrews within black grommets. See Condition Details re damage to back cover. Album contains 32 photos - personal prints of Keith Kings. Title page has been hand written to Les Denmead, dated 6/7/1970, thanking Mr. Denmead for his assistance over the years. Photos divided into the three SEC Provincial Tramway cities, each with a typed name proceeding the set of photos. Two further photos of Geelong were at the rear of the album, but were not in position when catalogued. One of these photos may be Reg. Item 1874 - photo of Geelong scrubber tram. Each of the photographs have been separately registered, as shown in the table below. Scanned images made of front and back of the photos. Many people on bridge, traffic jam of motor vehicles on the bridge itself. Note buildings at the Batman avenue terminus. Can see a tram trolley pole of a tram in Batman Avenue. No curve from Batman Ave. into Swanston St. At least two of the trams do not have route number boxes. Published by the Rose Stereograph Co. of Armadale Vic., titled "Rose Series Picturesque Views of Ballarat Australia". Front cover has address area, stamp position, a drawing of roses and publishers details. 1. Shows shelter at Grenville St, two ESCo cars travelling west in Sturt St., buildings on both sides of Sturt St and a number of motorcars in the image. Thought to be dated early to mid 1930's. Set of four letters between the Manager TB and Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo tramways between the period of 27 Dec. 1929 and 30 July 1930 regarding the "Australasian Tramway Conference. See image files for details of the letterhead of the various company offices. 1972.1 - Letter from the Engineer and Manager of the Melbourne Electric Supply Company Limited, Melbourne office advising Mr. A. D. Murdoch, Manager of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board that he had forwarded the questionnaire to their Geelong Engineer for completion. Dated 30/12/1929. Stamped as being received by the TB as 31/12/1929. See image 1972i1 for image of letter. 1972.2 - Letter from the Chief Accountant of ESCo Ballarat, to the Manager TB acknowledging receipt of the letter dated 24/12/1929 regarding the questionnaire and saying Mr. Pringle is on holidays and will be attended to on his return. Black and white photograph of Ballarat 12, crossing Sturt St. ex Lydiard St. Nth with post office in background. Photo dated 11/1947. Tram still has the base of the SEC 1930's colour scheme, but in poor condition. Front windows of the tram have been fully painted with a cream paint. Roof is a dark colour. Functional Object - Section Staff, Electric Supply Co. of Vic (ESCo), "Sturt St. South St. "
Used as a means of authorising a tramcar to have sole use of the track between the named points to avoid head on collisions. Safeworking object - known as a section staff. Not known when made, but in use until the introduction of the electric signalling in the mid 1930's by the SEC. Yields Information about the operation of Ballarat's trams and safeworking procedures.Cast brass item with a flat part recessed section with the words "BALLARAT TRAMWAYS SECTION STAFF" cast into the surface and a flat section underneath, flush with the outside edges in which the words "STURT ST. Item 2488, page 27, of ESCo No. 18, side on view of tram showing arrangements after windscreens installed and seats reversed. Photographed at Grenville St., after the large tramway shelter removed. Tram fitted with a Suttons Pianos and Players roof ad board. Has an "Enter Front End" sign on the rear of the tram. Photo about the mid 1920's On the right hand edge of the photograph is a faint stamp "Richards & Co / Photos". Alongside photo is a handwritten not on the size of the motors fitted to the various ESCo trams and the weight of the trams. Note Item Not formally Numbered. Preprinted form on off white card, titled "Motorman's Record" contained within Reg. Item 2526, page 58, used by the SEC in the late 1930's to record the details of the Motorman's or Driver's work for the day. Manual, Bell Punch Co, "The Automaticket Bell Punch System of Fare Collection and Control", c1935
Yields information about the method that the State Electricity Commission of Vic undertook interviews for staff appointments. Gave advice of the era for such interviews and objectives of the interview.Thirty page book printed on heavy light brown paper, stapled with an folded card cover titled "The Automaticket Bell Punch System of Fare Collection and Control". Describes the Automaticket system, has samples of traffic tickets pasted in the book, diagrams, drawings, gives details of the components and method of operation in particular ticket inspection, ticket and checking back office functions. Published by the Bell Punch Company of London early to mid 1930's? Cover and each page headed "Confidential Information for Executives". Has a photo of South Western Roadlines double deck bus with a conductor. See also Reg. Item 3629 for another version of the pamphlet for this machine. In the rear cover of the book, folded and stapled to give a pocket, are listed three forms that would have been provided with the book - not with the collected copy. -However in the pocket were eleven 11 "Ticket Issue Machine" or "TIM" tickets - eg City of South Melbourne library fine, packing slips, sample meal tickets, Army canteen beer tickets, and sample bus tickets - including one pinned to a business card - John Bolland of Eastern Suburbs Omnibus Service who were the agents for the TIM machines. (image btm3645i3) Card has date of "4-1-50". Also three sample Bell punch tickets and one ultimate machine ticket - two 1d tickets. As well at the time of acquisition were a SEC Special Pass - to Reg Item 3648 and a SEC Staff Pass ticket - to Reg item 3649.
