... Street. In 1901 the Coach Factory was sold to Mr C. E. Jones... Street. In 1901 the Coach Factory was sold to Mr C. E. Jones ...George Smith came to Wodonga c.1885 and carried on a business as a blacksmith and wheelwright in Hume Street. He subsequently erected the very substantial Federal Coach Factory in High Street. In 1901 the Coach Factory was sold to Mr C. E. Jones, but within three or four years George Smith again found himself in the establishment he had built. In 1907/8 Marcus Buntz partnered by a G. F. Simpson took possession of the Federal Coach Factory. In 1912 Buntz bought out the interest of Simpson and engaged a first-class wheelwright to do the woodwork. In 1912 a buggy could be had from £40 and a sulky £18. The business over many years developed from a shoeing forge and wheelwright business to a more modern day garage, keeping abreast with mechanisation. Marcus Buntz was joined in the business by his three sons, George, an A grade mechanic, Edward an auto-electrician and Henry, a blacksmith’s striker. The sons eventually took over the garage and handled both coach building and general service work. The firm also maintained the Wodonga Water Pump for many years, ensuring the town’s water supply. In 1948 the old established motor garage was purchased by Mr Jack Mylon. In July 1960 the building became Wodonga Market, housing a butcher, snack bar, milk bar, fruit and veg, Bill Dunstan’s Boat Centre and an Auction Mart. These images have local significance as they document a long-standing business in central Wodonga.2 black and white photos depicting Buntz Federal Coach Factory at different stages during its period of operation,Photo 1: Above building: FEDERAL COACH FACTORY/ M.H. ... , Roy Simpson, Morris, Tom Grant, Jack Taylor, Bert Jones..., Roy Simpson, Morris, Tom Grant, Jack Taylor, Bert Jones ...This photo is one of the oldest known photographic records of an Australian Rules football team in the Bacchus Marsh area. Australian Rules football was played in this area as early as the 1870s. An organized competition to play regular matches was formed in the early years of the twentieth century. This photo records the premiership winning team of 1912 in the match played against Melton. The match was reported in the Bacchus Marsh Express of 31 August 1912. The names of the players are not recorded on this photo, but the Express records the names of Marsh, Fairbank, Northcott, Palmer, Roy Simpson, Morris, Tom Grant, Jack Taylor, Bert Jones, Portingale (c.), Densley Bros., Wittick, Harry Grant, Leonard, Odgers, Bodycote. This item has historic and social significance as an image of one of the early sporting teams of Bacchus Marsh and district. It is a typical example of team photographs of this era. It is evidence of the transition of football from a social informal setting to an organised activity and signals the growth of importance of sport, in this case Australian Rules football, as a cultural and social activity central to the Australian ethos.A sepia photograph print mounted on mounting board, showing a group of 27 men arranged in three rows in front of a banner reading PREMIERS 1912 BMFC. Eighteen men are in football guernseys, nine in civilian clothes, three of whom are carrying towels over their shoulders. One player, very likely the captain, is holding a football. The photo is taken in an outdoor setting. On the reverse in pencil: 'Middle row - 5th from left JOHN WITTICK.'bacchus marsh football club, australian rules football -

Balance Sheet, Warrnambool Permanent Building and Investment Society 1872, 1872
... Newton, David Evans, NT C Stelling and W Jones. The bankers were... Samuel Macgregor, C A Cramer, James Astley Bromfield ...The Warrnambool permanent Building and Investment Society was established in May 1869. It relied on investors buying shares in the society, thereby providing the funds which were available to be borrowed to use in the building of houses. A considerable number of houses in Warrnambool would have been built using this scheme. The stated trustees in 1872 were Samuel Macgregor, C A Cramer, James Astley Bromfield, and the committee comprised of James Hider, W. W. Jamieson, James Coulstock, Archibald MacFarlane, Robert Newton, David Evans, NT C Stelling and W Jones. The bankers were the national Bank of Australasia. It had some difficulties in the 1870’s but was still operating well into the 1930’s where it again was not putting through the volume of business compatible with its resources and it had been found necessary to pay off a considerable number of fixed deposits and Investors’ shares. There is little mention of it after the mid 1930’s. This document provides details of an organization which operated in Warrnambool for over 60 years and proved beneficial to homebuilders and investors alike. It also has a number of well- known local names listed in their positions of operating the building society.Cream watermarked paper folded to four pages. Title on front cover with letter to shareholders printed below for the year ending 30th April 1872. Page three has balance sheet of the Warrnambool Permanent Building & investment Society. With this concert appearance, for which he is coming specially from Sydney, Joseph Post is making a return visit among his former orchestra, for he was stationed in Melbourne as resident conductor of the ABC's Melbourne Orchestra for several years. When the Sydney Symphony was formed on a permanent basis, with Eugene Goosens in charge, Mr Post was appointed his deputy as junior conductor to the Sydney Symphony - at the same time resuming his earlier position as director of the . . . Photo of Joseph Post. Bertha Jorgensen It is a notable occasion for music lovers when Melbourne's esteemed 'First Lady' of the Orchestra steps out of her place as leader and is heard as soloist. Bertha Jorgensen gave her first public performance as a five year old prodigy in Castlemaine, where she then lived, and a few years later she began travelling each week the 60 miles to Melbourne for lessons with Alberto Zelman, Junior. At fifteen, still adorned with pigtail, she came to Melbourne with her family and joined his orchestra. Since then Miss Jorgensen has been constantly engaged in orchestral work, and in attaining the exacting role of leader of the Melbourne Symphony is holder of a unique position. No other major orchestra in the world is led by a woman, and many are the evidences of amazement expressed by visiting conductors. Some have been taken aback and inclined to scepticism at the outset, but all have gone away with high praise for her ability. Photo of Bertha Jorgensen. Programme. Oberon. Photograph - 3 black & white Photographs, 'The Grange' ( 'Baydon Hill' ) Moorabbin, c 1920
'The Grange ' was a 2 storey home built 1857 by Mr Charles Tuck, originally named 'Baydon Hill' , at 1011 Nepean Highway, Moorabbin ( South Brighton). Mr Charles Tuck was Veterinary Surgeon from Baydon Hill, Wiltshire, England, who migrated to Australia c1850. He married his cousin Miss Jan Chaudler in Melbourne in1853. He was at the Ballarat gold-fields at the time of the riots and then they settled in South Brighton ( later Moorabbin) and built a large Georgian Styled home called 'Baydon Hill'. The Tucks had a large family - 9 children. Charles enjoyed a prosperous Veterinary Practice as his advice was needed for stock purchases by the farmers / settlers. Charles died in 1893 and Jane left the property c 1903 and died at Blackburn in 1928. The House had 5 owners, the last being the Healey family c1920 and at some stage the name was changed to 'The Grange' and the gates shown were installed. The Healey Family were also prosperous in developing vegetables and flower seeds and seedlings. 'The Grange' was sold to Moorabbin City Council 1972 and then used by the City of Moorabbin Historical Society for meetings and storage of historical material. It was demolished amidst considerable controversy 1983 and the District Police Offices were built on the site. ( S.T.Mulvany, Grand-daughter of Charles Tuck 26/7/1974)The Grange was a significant property 1853 -1983 in Moorabbin. It was built by Mr Charles Tuck 1857and in1900 extended from Point Nepean Road to South Road - 10acres. Mr Harold James Healey purchased the property in c1920 and leased a portion to a Chinese market gardener. Later with his sons he established a profitable Plant Nursery that they managed for 42years.. Keith Healey, a son, remodelled the house extensively mid 20thC .The Moorabbin City Council purchased it in 1972 for $255,000 and it was demolished amid controversy 1983. The District Police Offices are now on the site.3x black and white photographs of the property at 1011 Nepean Highway Moorabbin built by Mr Charles Tuck c1853 known as 'The Grange'. Photo 1: Circa 1895: Pupils at East Bentleigh State School. Located close to Cnr. of Tucker and Centre Rds, East Bentleigh. Demolished c 1990. Pupil, Elizabeth Ann Jones, (Mrs Kennedy) B.1884- D 1979 is marked with a cross. The Jones and Kennedy families were early settlers in the Moorabbin Shire. Photo 2: Circa 1895: Pupils at East Bentleigh State School with a football. The very poor condition of these "restored" photographs indicates their great age, and deterioration that occurred prior to the Moorabbin Historical Society receiving them. Unfortunately, no further improvement is possible. The original photographs are held on file at the CM.H.S. Box Cottage Museum.2 x black and white Photographs. The photos are in poor condition and have been re stored. The first photo is a group of pupils, standing and sitting in a line having a class photo taken. Due to the deterioration of the photograph, some of the pupils are not clearly seen. The class is a mix of young boys and girls. The girl third from left, front is marked with a cross and named Ellzabeth Ann Jones 1884 - 1979, a relative of Mr James Jones and Mr John Herron, who became Mrs Kennedy. Second photograph is also a group photo of young male pupils from the East Bentleigh State School.
