The first church for St Chad's was completed and opened in August 1914. The building was a wooden structure capable of seating about 150 people. The Church was built in Thames Promenade, Chelsea. In 1953 plans were made to build a new Church. A Chancel and vestry were erected and in 1965 work on the church building was completed. The original date for the laying of Foundation stone for the first Mission building at Australian Wharf in 1906 had to be changed to the 5th of February 1907 due to industrial action at the Wharves. See scrapbooks and clippings for details. Lord Northcote the Governor General officiated. The invitation marks the establishment for the first time at the Australian Wharf official recognition of the need to establish a Mission for seafarers in this location, some six years after presentation of the letter in 1897 from 22 Captains urging and requesting a respectable and convenient facility. Just ten years later the Mission would have to move to an adjacent site and raise funds for yet another Mission building in 1916. In 1909, assistant Chaplain Rev. Haire presented the Mission with an 'uncommonly artistic pulpit' in memory of his mother. This pulpit sits in The Chapel of Saint Peter, which belongs to the State Heritage listed (H1496) Mission to Seafarers Victoria complex. The dedication was performed by the Archbishop of Melbourne on the 26th January.Only one other 'maritime inspired' pulpit of a similar vintage is known in Australia, gifted to the Australian National Maritime Museum by the Mission to Seafarers, Sydney. Born in Ireland 1864, Daniel Mannix entered into the Catholic Church and in 1917, he became the Archbishop of Melbourne. Dedicated to the community and its issues, he was known to have spoken against conscription. Colour transparency (slide) created in June 1976 during a tour by the Junior National Trust, which was led by members of Kew Historical Society. The Federation style house was the former vicarage for St. Mary's Church in O' Shanassy Street, Sunbury. It replaced the former 'Priorswood' vicarage, which was in Station Street about a mile from the church. The foundation stone for the new vicarage was laid by Mrs. Russell Clarke on 21st February 1914 and was opened by His Grace the Archbishop of Melbourne on 10th June 1914. Sir Henry Wrixon, prominent Melbourne barrister and solicitor, later owned and resided at the property. In 1917 Raheen was purchased by the Catholic Church and became the official residence of Archbishop Mannix, as well as four other Catholic archbishops of Melbourne. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian from the 1960s to the 1970s. The Chapel of Saint Peter was dedicated on September 6, 1917 by His Grace the Archbishop of Melbourne. The total sum necessary for the construction of the chapel was collected by the L.H.L.G and the chapel stands as a tribute to the honoured memory of the officers and men of the Mercantile Marine who lost their lives in the Great War. Note that the building was erected to commemorate fallen Mercantile Marines in the Great War before the war was concluded. This shows that the war and death toll thus far was significant enough at this point that it was having a serious impact on Australian society. The Civic Centenary Thanksgiving Service was held at Holy Trinity Church, Port Melbourne on Sunday 10th July 1960 at 7pm. It was attended by His Worship the Mayor, and the Mayoress, Cr. L.S. The dinner took place at the Town Hall, Melbourne, and was attended by the Governor, Sir Rohan Delacombe, the Hon. Don Chipp, M.P., the Premier of Victoria, Sir Henry Bolt, and the Lord Archbishop of Melbourne, The Most Reverend F. Woods. The insert has information for guests and is indicative of traffic movement on Swanston Street at the time. The document was found with other papers of President D.J. Simonson who would have been one of the guests since it took place during his presidency. Rev Daniel Foley was the third Bishop of Ballarat 1916 - 1941. A cousin to Archbishop Mannix of Melbourne he accompanied Mannix on his 1920 journey across the U.S.A giving many public speeches. He was witness to the removal of Mannix from the SS Baltic by the British in the Irish Sea, an event that made world headlines. Bishop Dann is sending greetings to the new Uniting Church. Robert William "Bob" Dann (28 September 1914 – 10 April 2008)[1] was the 9th Anglican Archbishop of Melbourne. Dann studied for ordination at Trinity College at the University of Melbourne and was ordained in 1946. His first post was as Director of Youth and Religious Education in the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne. After successive incumbencies he was appointed the Archdeacon of Essendon and, in 1969, he became a bishop coadjutor of the diocese before becoming the archbishop eight years later. He retired in 1983. He came out of retirement for some months in 1987 to take charge of the parish of St John's, Camberwell, after the sudden death on the vicar, until a new appointment could be made.
