This is an album used as a scrapbook to insert memorabilia of the 1927 opening of Parliament House in Canberra. The compiler of the scrapbook is unknown. The scrapbook includes small sepia-coloured photographs, a stamp, copies of photographs of the Duke and Duchess of York and a printed program of the 1927 Dedication of the Houses of Parliament. The photographs include the opening of Parliament House in 1927, the N.S.W. Mounted Police, notable military men of the time, the Melbourne escort for the Duke and Duchess of York procession and some views of Canberra. The states of Australia were created in 1901 with the establishment of Federation and the Australian Parliament met at Melbourne from 1901 to 1927 when the Australian Capital Territory was created and the first Australian Parliament House was built. This album is of minor significance as the material concerns mostly the opening of Canberra’s Parliament House in 1927, a national event. One photograph, that of C.A. Rogers, has local significance. This gilt bronze medal was issued to school children to commemorate the opening of the first Australian Federal Parliament which opened in Melbourne on 9 May, 1901. This cup and saucer set was issued as a souvenir of the opening of the Federal Parliament in Canberra in 1927. The building was opened by Prince Albert, the Duke of York who was accompanied by Elizabeth, the Duchess of York. The Duke of York later became King George VI of England. The colonies in Australia became Federated States in 1901 and from that date to 1927 the Australian Federal Parliament sat in Melbourne. When Canberra became the capital of Australia a Parliament House building was erected at a cost of £600,000 but it is now known as Old Parliament House as the present Parliament House was opened in 1988. This cup and saucer set is of interest as a memento of an important event in Australia’s history – the creation of a capital city and the opening of the first Federal Parliament House. It will be useful for display. This is a white china cup and saucer set. Both the cup and saucer have two gold bands around the rims and are decorated with black ornamentation and the portraits of the Duke and Duchess of York contained within gold oval patterns. Elizabeth Wilson met James Henry Courtney at the annual Lord Mayor's Ball on 28 August 1890. In 1892, Capt James Courtney moved to 'Courtland' an architect-designed house at 31 Jenkin Street, Northcote. James married Elizabeth at Nth Fitzroy. Several years later they moved to 108 McKean Street, Nth Fitzrory. Capt and Mrs Courtney were guests at the official opening of the Australian Parliament on 9 May 1901, the reception at the Exhibition Building that evening, and the Royal Review at Flemington the following day. Finally they moved to 'Lumeah', a brick villa at 11 Belmont Avenue, Kew.Black silk floor length skirt with black lining and internal tapes. The skirt is distinguished by a gathered hem giving the impression of ruffles. With the donation, there is also an accompanying group of copied photographs of the Courtney family, including one which shows Elizabeth Courtney, the owner of the skirt. Gideon Nicol (1836-1908) was a seaman who came to Warrnambool in 1858. In 1865 he selected land at Mount Warrnambool. He was one of the founders of the Farnham Cheese and Butter Factory and the Garvoc Cheese and Butter Factory and was a Warrnambool Shire Councillor from 1879 to 1906. He received to invitation to attend the opening of Australia’s first Parliament as the President of the Warrnambool Shire at the time. George Reid was Prime Minister of Australia from 1904 to 1905 and was Leader of the Opposition for six of the first seven years of the Australian parliament. The Prime Ministers Avenue is a collection of bronze bust portraits of the Prime Ministers of Australia, located at the Ballarat Botanical Gardens in Ballarat, Victoria. The Prime Ministers' portraits are commissioned after the incumbent term of each Prime Minister by the City of Ballarat. The City of Ballarat has taken responsibility for commissioning the busts after funds set aside by politician Richard Armstrong Crouch were exhausted in 2014. Crouch originally donate money to pay for six busts, the first of which was unveiled in 1940. The collection of prime ministers' busts are unique in Australia, representing the only sculptural portrait collection of all past Australian Prime Ministers. In 1990 MAJ Bob Williams was the OC of Technical Development Cell. He won first prize for his entry ‘Innovations in Cartographic Communication’ in the individual category at the 2nd Australian Institute of Cartographers and BHP Engineering Technology Research and Development Awards. The award was announced at the 1990 Australian Cartographic Conference in Darwin where MAJ Williams presented his entry. At the time he had completed PhD studies at the Australian Defence Academy and was the first Survey Corps officer to complete studies at this advanced level. Also, in 1990 the Royal Australian Survey Corps’ meritorious achievements were formally recognised by the Senate of the Australian Parliament in a Notice of Motion on 31st of May 1990. The Royal Australian Survey Corps also featured in the issue of a commemorative stamped envelope issued by Australia Post. These achievements are covered in more detail in page 147 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. A letter to Deputy Prime Minister Doug Anthony inviting him to speak at Legacy and his replies that he couldn't commit at that stage, the notations were updates on further contact with him to try and finalise a date. Legatees met regularly and had guest speakers to entertain and inform on different subjects at their Tuesday Luncheons. These documents was from a file of information about guest speakers (see also 00812-00822 and 00829-00837). The Programme Committee was responsible for organising the speakers.
