Norma Lillian Henshall nee Sterritt biography (by son in law Rod Sharp) Norma was born on the 14th November 1912. She was a forward and independent child and always did what others would not consider appropriate at that time and you could say she was a hit of a rebel. Norma worked in Fairweather's in Pleasant Street and while she was there was taught to drive. She later drove Fairweather's Taxi being one of the first ladies to do so in Ballarat. Norma put her age up from 17 to 18 so she could get her license earlier and purchased an Austin 7 red sports car complete with a fishtail back. Norma taught herself the fundamentals of developing photographs and in 1938 rode her man's bicycle around Ballarat taking photographs of the various businesses decorated to celebrate the centenary of Ballarat. During the Second World War with her husband serving overseas in the Middle East Norma enlisted in the Army and served from 1942 through until 1945 as an Ambulance driver in the 3rd Ambulance and was stationed at Camp Pell which was located adjacent to the Melbourne Zoo. Francis Michael Forde was Prime Minister for only eight days, 6–13 July 1945, after the death of John Curtin. Deputy leader of the federal parliamentary Labor Party for 14 years and for nine of those years was deputy Leader of the Opposition. The Prime Ministers Avenue is a collection of bronze bust portraits of the Prime Ministers of Australia, located at the Ballarat Botanical Gardens in Ballarat, Victoria. The Prime Ministers' portraits are commissioned after the incumbent term of each Prime Minister by the City of Ballarat. The City of Ballarat has taken responsibility for commissioning the busts after funds set aside by politician Richard Armstrong Crouch were exhausted in 2014. Crouch originally donate money to pay for six busts, the first of which was unveiled in 1940. The collection of prime ministers' busts are unique in Australia, representing the only sculptural portrait collection of all past Australian Prime Ministers. This quartz and bluestone monument pays tribute to James Galloway the founder of the the eight-hour day system that gave workers the right to stop work after 8 hours without any penalty. The system was widely celebrated as a world first and Australia became known as a workingman’s paradise. Eight hour day is translated as: Eight hours of work, eight hours of leisure and eight hours of rest. In 1880, the 8hr day Anniversary Committee decided to mark the establishment of the 8hrs day by erecting a monument to the memory of the pioneer of the 8hr movement in the colony, James Galloway. The campaign for the Galloway monument was so successful that one year later on 21 April 1881, and after the longest 8hrs day procession to that date, the Mayor of the City, Councillor A T Morrison, imbarred the monument at the foot of Sturt Street, Ballarat. The monument is of historic significance to the people of BallaratGranite spire with four cast iron drinking fountains and marble tablets. Political reform was high on the agenda of Australian Congress Committees. The report includes the preamble, rules and platform. Ballarat was chosen as the venue for the important 7th Intercolonial Trade Union Congress of Australia in April 1891 at which certain resolutions concerning political action by the workers were passed.
