Flag, Pennant, circa 1956
This Venezuelan 1956 Olympic pennant was souvenired by Marlene Austin, nee Trenberth in 1956 when she was working as an official driver for the Melbourne Olympic Games. Marlene, who was living with her parents in Brighton at the time, took leave from her job as a stenographer to work as a driver at the Olympics. She drove officials and dignitaries from a variety of nations (including Thailand, Italy, Cuba and Sweden) to and from events, collecting a number of souvenirs. Marlene's family have lived in Brighton since 1941, when her parents moved into a house at 15 Moffat Street. The house remained in the family for more than 75 years, before it was sold in 2018.White triangular pennant with a blue border. The pennant features the image of the Olympic rings, with the central ring replaced by the image of the Olympic flame burning in a cauldron atop a Grecian pillar. Inside each of the four remaining rings are images of athletes competing in sporting events: a hurdler, a shooter, two boxers and a cyclist.Above the Olympic flame, the word "MELBOURNE" is printed in black. To the right of the image, printed in yellow, red and blue, is the text "VENEZUELA A LOS / XVI / JUEGOS OLIMPICOS" At the far right is the year "1956" in yellow text on a black background.marlene pearl austin, marlene pearl trenberth, 1950s, 1956 olympic games, olympic games, pennant, venezuela -

Poster, Enlist in the Sportsmen's Thousand, 1917
This poster, published by the State Parliamentary Recruiting Committee, depicts Lieutenant Albert JACKA, VC, as a role model for a huge campaign to enlist sportsmen into the Australian Imperial Force in 1917. Jacka achieved instant fame back home when he became the first Australian to win the Victoria Cross during the First World War. It was said that one of the reasons he was such a good soldier, and had such a fighting attitude, was that he had been a boxer before the war. The campaign to enlist sportsmen was fuelled by a strong belief that by playing sport young men developed specific skills and qualities that could be used on the battlefield.Representative of two common recruiting devices used in Australia, a well-known local soldier and a target number of men required for a specially named group.Depicts Lieutenant Albert Jacka, VC, as a role model for a huge campaign to enlist sportsmen. Surrounding Jacka are colourful depictions of healthy young men engaged in a variety of sports: football, rowing, cricket, tennis and golf are amongst the sports.Full Text: Enlist in the Sportsmen's Thousand, Join Together, Train Together, Embark Together, Fight Together, Show the enemy what Australian sporting men can do.albert jacka, ww1, poster -

Victorian Ensign, c.1870
An ensign is a national flag used within a naval or military context. A naval ensign is usually required to be flown when entering and leaving harbour, when sailing through foreign waters, and when a ship is signalled to do so by a warship. They are also flown during battles and when the ensign is lowered, the ship is said to have surrendered. This Victorian Naval Ensign was used by the Victorian Naval Contingent in the Boxer Rebellion in China in 1900. The contingent was led by Captain Frederick Tickell who had commanded the Victorian Naval Forces since 1897. In around 1901, Captain Tickell presented the ensign to Frederick Thomas Sargood [1834-1903] who had been Minister of Defence and Education for the Colony of Victoria and was a Senator in Federal Parliament. In September 1986 the ensign was stolen from Parliament House. The suspect was described as a young man wearing 'a beret and bow tie' ("The Age" 26 September 1986). Fortunately the ensign was recovered a week later. Victorian Ensign wool flag with Union Jack, Southern Cross and crown emblem. Hand written ink inscription on white linen sleeve. Rope attached. Framed.Handwritten black ink on flag header: "This Victorian Ensign (the first on active service) was used by the Victorian Contingent during service in 1900 in China. It was presented to Senator Sir F.T. Sargood K.C.M.G. by Captain Tickell C.M.B. Lieut. Col."colony of victoria, boxer rebellion, victorian navy -

Newspaper - Derailment of tram 121 at Riversdale Road level Crossing, Herald Sun, 8-9-1928
Newspaper Clipping - from the Melbourne Herald Sun Pictorial newspaper - 8/ 9/1928 about the derailment after running through the catch points of a maximum traction tramcar at the Riversdale Road level crossing the previous day 7/9/1928. The front bogie or truck has been torn from underneath the tramcar. On the rear is a report of a boxing match in Winnipeg the previous Friday, between NZ born Bert Brown and Vic Foley. A web search (boxrec.com/boxer/90347) accessed 1/11/2016 shows the match took place on 6/9/1928. A check with The Sun microfilm at the State Library shows the paper was published on 8/9/1928 Study of the photo, discussions with Norm Cross, particularly with regard to the positioning of the numbers; can see "12", the 2 being centred in the panel, indicates the other number could be a "1". Consultation with the record cards indicate it is most likely tram 121. See images i3. Released back in service 21/3/1929 after relatively expensive accident repairs. See Reg Item 6377 for other photographs.Yields information about the amount of damage to the tram following a derailment to a maximum traction tram at Riversdale Road in 1928.Newspaper clipping from The Melboune Herald Sun 8-9-1928 - not dated.tramways, tramcars, derailments, accidents, level crossings, riversdale road, tram 121, n class
