Else Oertel was a German internee in Camp 3A from 1940-1945. The penny-brooch is an example of the ingenuity of the internees in making use of anything at hand & repurposing it for much more than originally intended. Else's daughter, Else-Lore Hukins donated the item. Says Else-Lore of the brooch: "Jewellery was made out of available metals. Pennies made a bright brooch and especially interesting if it featured the current year it was given".Brooch fashioned from Australian 1943 penny. He was a German citizen, and along with his wife (Eugenia) and child (Kenneth) was resident in Singapore upon the beginning of WWII. Her husband was away on business in Germany at the outbreak of war and was not interned with them & therefore Else was also motivated to learn Russian because it was possible she would be repatriated to the Russian sector of Germany at the end of the war (namely Chemnitz, Saxony). Content of folder include: 1- Transcribed (German to English) copies of letters written by Ludwig to his daughter Marga and others, whilst interned in UK and Australia. Original letter are in the hands of Ludwig's son. Harry Gorry bid for & purchased on internet auction site. The seller's mother was putting these & other items up for auction. Her father, the seller's grandfather was Dr. Bruno Koenig, a German surgeon detained by Allied forces while fleeing New Guinea in 1941. He was detained & sent to be interned in Camp 3, Tatura. There he met the painter Cesare Vagarini & they became friends, thus 4 years later upon the end of the war Vagarini gave the surgeon the two paintings in thanks & in memory of their friendship. Dr Koening then passed the paintings down to his daughter, where they remained in the family for 60 years. The seller's mother decided it was time to sell & was happy that the paintings went to a good home, as the family was until now unaware of the connection between Vagarini and the Tatura Museum. Harry Gorry just happened to notice a familiar name in an auction that he came across by accident & purchased them for our benefit. Else-Lore Oertel was a German internee in Camp 3A as a child, with her mother from 1940-1945. Woodworking was popular amongst the internees and Werner Dehnel, another internee in camp 3, made the darning mushroom for Else-Lore, for darning socks.Wooden darning mushroom. Darker wood at top. Base (stalk) is of lighter wood. Both possibly varnished. Stalk has bevelled lines where it meets top. Base has 1939 Australian penny underside.
