Bendoc is in the far east of the State close to the border. Benduck is Aboriginal for plain, Wagra meaning `black-eyed crow' and Wagra Benduck means ‘noise in the trees'. On the 13th of December 1872 the Bendoc people had 2 roods of land reserved for a school and again on 22nd of May 1874 1 acre was also reserved. It was not until 7th of July 1876 that the Government authorised the building of the school. It was 24ft x 16ft with quarters (three rooms) for the teacher, total cost £446 1s 6d. The teacher paid £9 per year rent. School began on 11th of July 1873 which suggests that classes were held prior to the erection of the school building. The head teacher then was Frederick Jones. In 1962 the Department erected a new school of two rooms and the following year a new residence was provided. R.T. Vale had a stationary and bookshop in Ballarat. He had studied at the Ballarat School of Mines, and served on its Council. In 1886 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the member for Ballarat West, serving until 1889 and again from 1892 to 1902. From 1894 to 1896 he was a minister without portfolio.Two handwritten letters from Richard T. Father of the donor, Mervyn Graham, worked for Denny Lascelles for many years as a wool classer in Geelong and later as a representative in Hamilton. The Denny Lascelles Wool Warehouse was the first building in Victorian planned to facilitate storage, inspection and marketing of wool in one operation, and upon completion was the second largest store in the colony. A recollection of information about Girls Legacy Club and its primary instructor Miss Enez Domec Carre. It was written by C.E. Chancellor in June 1976. "Draft only. Girls Legacy Classes When I was attached to Girls' Classes after being transferred from Mildura Club to Melbourne, I found that the difference between the administration of the Girls' and the Boys' Classes was that the Girls' Classes were centralised in one building in Market Street, whilst the Boys' Classes were held in Melbourne and in various suburbs. The building in Market Street was leased from the Melbourne City Council, it was old, had narrow stairways, small rooms and was dusty and noisy so that is can be appreciated that the classes were held under great difficulties and inconvenience. Classes were held on both Friday and Tuesday nights of each week and the girls were trained in physical culture, ballet and dancing, and most of them also attended a speech training class. The girls were divided into Junior, Intermediate and Senior girls, and the hourly classes commenced at 5 p.m. It will be appreciated that after WW2 the numbers of girls attending increased considerably (actual numbers may be on old files) and it was necessary for the overall organisation to be efficient for this work to be efficiently carried out. In retrospect I do not think that too great a tribute can be paid to Miss Enez Domec Carre, F.P.C.V., not only for her great ability in teaching the physical culture and dancing classes, but also because she became the confidant of the mothers and the girls for their particular problems, and was able to transmit these to the Class Legatees, and she also assisted in helping to solve them - and be sure there were many of them with so many girls and families involved. Miss Carre was also responsible for the many magnificent presentations of the various items learnt by the Classes during each year and of the merging of individual classes held at various times and days to enable them to be so successfully shown at the each annual Legacy Parade. Miss Carre also organised the Mothers, Legatees' wives and friends into sewing groups to provide the thousands of costumes required for the items presented, and naturally she had to design these costumes - all of this work was carried out, as previously mentioned, under the extreme difficulties they were working under in the Market Street building. The purchase of Legacy House and the transfer of classes to this building was of immense help and importance in the carrying on of these classes which have proved so valuable to Legacy work. Many of the girls - now Mothers and Grandmothers still help in Legacy work and still appreciate the value of the Girls' Classes were to them. C.E. Chancellor cc. to Legatees A.R. The Lavers Hill Hotel was established in about 1906. The publicans were Messrs. Hedley, Tom McGrath, Pat Harrington and F. Betteridge. When Tom McGrath was publican the hotel boasted 20 rooms and first-class stabling. Pat Harrington when publican supported the local football club when it was formed, and soon after owned the General Store from 1924 until 1926. When a census officer collecting statistical information asked Mrs Harrington, "What does your husband do?" the answer quickly came, "Well now, what could you say Pat has ever done." 'Wimba' is of significance as one of the key nineteenth century houses of Kew and for remaining in a substantially intact state. Although probably built some time earlier, the first mention in the Rate Books of the property later known as 'Wimba Lodge' appears in the entry for 1870 when the property, owned by John Sharpe Denbigh, a civil servant, was given an N.A.V. of £72 2. Denbigh did however occupy a house in Cotham Road in 1863, and it is possible that was the same premises'. The house was occupied by Denbigh until at least May 1876 when the 'family residence...' \ 'as auctioned to Carlington George Edmund Marston 5, a chemist of Smith Street, Collingwood. At the time of the auction the house was described thus: The residence and grounds of the late J.S. Dendigh, situate in the most elevated part of Cotham Road Kew. The grounds comprise an area of 4a Or29p or thereabouts, and have a frontage to Cotham-road of 4 chains. The house has two large rooms in front, with 6ft hall built of brick, bay and side windows (plate glass), four rooms of wood behind with slate roofs, bathroom and closets, detached kitchen and servant's room, large shed with washing boiler, pantry and cellar under, brick and cement tank, and the Yan Yean laid onto house and grounds, cowshed, pigstye, &c, the whole securely fenced. First class orchard and flower garden. The paddocks laid with English grasses and drained... .' The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Marion Popplewell continued making her small wheel thrown pots with fine handles, and made glazes herself from materials imported from England. Attending classes in Ceramics up until the mid 1970s, she also took some classes in Woodwork and Needlework. Her 'Pink Glazed Jug' 1945 won a prize at the Royal Melbourne Show in the late 1940s. She died in Melbourne on 26 September 1998. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 2000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.Wheel thrown vessel with three slight bulges and turned foot. Deep blue glaze with rim banded in a second glaze, causing a eutectic reaction, causing the spontaneous syrupy runs down the outside of the vessel. Vessel has many small divots, suggesting the clay may have been reclaimed, or collected from nature, and not thoroughly prepared before throwing. Vessel has one small chip (13mm x 5mm) on inside of rim, but is not a threat to its overall integrity. Including two large well equipped gymnasia which are attended by more than 700 junior legatees each week. A dental clinic were Junior Legatees under 17 years of age are able to receive free dental examinations and treatment. Free medical examinations are carried out here too. Meeting rooms for Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and Senior Widows Club (those over 50 years of age). When printed the Senior Widows Club numbered more than 5,200. It mentions room for fetes run by a number of auxiliaries to raise funds. Also a sewing room fitted with 5 electric sewing machines to make costumes for the Annual Demonstration. A well equipped library for use of the Junior Legatees. A ladies lounge and television room where widows may rest when visiting the city. Rooms for speech training and mathematics coaching classes. A maintenance workshop where all sporting and general equipment used by widows and children can be repaired and/or constructed. Sundry committee meeting rooms where members of Legacy meet to consider and find solutions for the many problems which arise in respect of the families they care for. A document written in 1973 with a summary of the first fifty years of Legacy. The note from the Public Relations Committee mentions this document 'Fifty Years On' and 'In the beginning', both written by Legatee Armstrong were a fine contribution to the Annual Report in 1973, and were being sent to the printers. (In the beginning is at 01505). L/ Armstrong mentions the committees and the order they were created in. 1) Comradeship Committee: 'this is the driving force of Legacy. The spirit of Legacy is Service and the body of Legacy is Comradeship, - the comradeship of men who suffered privations and pain, faced death and disaster together, was the inspiration and source of Legacy'. 2) Policy and Programme: Legacy began as a Luncheon club and has remained so ever since. 3) Unemployment. 4) Public Affairs 5) Deceased Soldiers' Children's Welfare: It directed and controlled all the Club's work with and for the Children. The precursor of JLC. 6) Problem cases 7) Advisory 8) Girls Classes: with the success of the boys classes there was a demand for something for the girls. He mentions the fight to build the Shrine. Also the rooms in Market street were rented in 1932 after years of meeting at houses and in restaurants. In 1937 they hired Jack Barnes as Secretary and Employment officer (he had to resign as a legatee to be in a paid role). December 1949 Ivan Layton was appointed as Executive Director. A document written in 1976 by Legatee Frank Meldrum containing his account of the start of Legacy. He was responding to a request for information about the history of Legacy that the archive committee was collating. He mentions several key members by name and what they achieved. As with other similar accounts he mentions the original objective was to see diggers placed in employment. When two years later the focus changed to the families 'thanks to Frank Doolan Legacy found its SOUL'. Many other accounts have also used the term 'soul' when referring to Frank's suggestion. It seems many Legatees had been quietly helping families of their comrades; Frank 'said he was helping a widow with two children of an old army mate. It was discovered that several of the Board were doing the same. Stan Savige had taken over the care of his widowed sister and her two boys, whose father had died at Passchendale. I had a widow with two little ones whose father was one of my best mates at Anzac. He died of flu virus after returning to Australia. I think eleven members of the Board or Committees were already giving similar service. Frank's proposal caught on immediately. Legacy had found its Soul!' 'Harold Peters started his Lit and Debating Class and I was asked by Stan to find a PT instructor', Frank Meldrum asked for the 'Billy' Williams to helped, and a cobber from Anzac, Louis Vavjanezki, to take on boxing and wrestling classes. 'All committees carried their own expenses amongst themselves - nothing was charged to JLC. Hugh Brain started the Education Committee and was given a donation, I think of $1000 (a heck of a lot in those days) by the Ballieu Bros.' He also mentions 'For the first 5-10 years practically all administrative costs were borne by the members.' 'Stan Savige was, of course a tremendous driving force in all the work for the Juniors. He put on a Christmas Camp at Balnarring on his own property and was Camp Commandant and Camp Cook.' Legatee Keith Mitchell helped Frank Meldrum in doing a dental examination of all children in the classes and then Frank did the necessary treatments in his rooms. When it was known they were treating over 400 children and their mums, Syd Birrell then got the board to co-opt two more dentists into the Club and form a Dental Clinic. Syd Birrell also started a Legal Committee to provide free legal advice. 'Committees quietly vied with each other to give better services to the Juniors and their mums. It was an atmosphere that was unbelievably happy - SERVCE WITHOUT SELF'. He mentions picnics, including one at Grimwade house - photos are at 01382 - where legatees were dressed up. The first demonstration was held in the 'Playhouse, just over Princes Bridge and was a great success.' Aaron Beattie and Mrs Gilles were mentioned. Walter Withers once lived at the corner of Bolton and Brougham Streets, Eltham. Covered under Heritage Overlay, Nillumbik Planning Scheme. Published: Nillumbik Now and Then /​ Marguerite Marshall 2008; photographs Alan King with Marguerite Marshall.; p105 Walter Withers, one of Australia’s most famous artists, once lived in Southernwood, the weatherboard house at the corner of Bolton and Brougham Streets, Eltham. Withers, one of the first prominent artists to live in Eltham, was known for his lyrical paintings of the Australian bush and is associated with the Heidelberg School of artists.1 Withers was born in 1854 at Handsworth, Warwickshire, England, the grandson of an artist. He studied art at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. But in 1882 his father, opposing an artistic career for Withers, ordered him to go to Australia. However, after working as a jackaroo on several country properties for 18 months, Withers resumed painting in Melbourne, where he enrolled in evening art classes at the Melbourne National Gallery school of painting under G F Folingsby. Employed as a draughtsman by William Inglis & Co, then by Ferguson & Mitchell, lithographic printers, Withers produced portraits in black-and-white for several periodicals. His work was exhibited in the Old Academy, Melbourne. At this time he met and became life-long friends with artists Frederick McCubbin, Tom Roberts and Louis Abrahams.2 In 1887 Withers went to England and married Fanny Finn. They lived in Paris for awhile, where Withers studied at the Academie Julian. After his return to Melbourne in 1889, Withers lived at the artist camp at Eaglemont, then moved close to the Charterisville mansion, where he established a studio and sub-let cottages to other artists. Around 1892 Withers opened a Collins Street studio, had his first exhibition, and started giving painting classes. One of his pupils was Norman Lindsay,3 also to become a prominent artist. Withers had long been attracted to Eltham, but had to wait until 1903 to live there, after the railway line was extended to Eltham in 1902. He could then commute to the painting classes he gave in Melbourne.4 Withers lived on the two and a half acres (1.0ha) Bolton Street property with his wife and five children. They were joined for a short time by prominent painter Sir Hans Heyson who took lessons from Withers. Withers added a studio to the Queen Anne/Edwardian style seven-bedroom home, which had been built in 1891. Each bedroom included a fireplace and most rooms had 12 foot high (3.6m) ceilings. The house retains several fine leadlight windows. Withers painted his largest canvas The Return from the Harvest in 1905, at his Eltham studio. He is represented in national, state and regional galleries, and in many private collections in Australia and abroad. In 1904-05 Withers was president of the Victorian Artists’ Society. Withers at times stayed during the week at his studio in Oxford Chambers, Melbourne, and on weekends and holidays with his family at Eltham. Withers lived in Eltham until his death in 1914, aged 60 years. He had been plagued by rheumatism and in later life by heart and lung disease. It is said he died of a stroke peacefully in a rocking chair in front of the lounge-room fire. He is buried at St Helena in the St Katherine’s Anglican Church cemetery.5 In 1983, the auction of the house sparked fears that it would be pulled down, or substantially altered. Fortunately the new owners decided to retain the house. Some security was given to the house’s future when it was later included in the Heritage Overlay to the Nillumbik Planning Scheme. The property is also important because it is one of only a few left in the district, which were once owned by noted artists. These include three in Warrandyte: one formerly owned by Penleigh Boyd, another by Frank Crozier, and the other by Danila Vassilieff; and two in Eltham: Percy Leason’s in Lavender Park Road and Justus Jörgensen’s Montsalvat. A small park at the corner of Bible and Arthur Streets, Eltham is named in Walter Withers’ honour.This collection of almost 130 photos about places and people within the Shire of Nillumbik, an urban and rural municipality in Melbourne's north, contributes to an understanding of the history of the Shire. Published in 2008 immediately prior to the Black Saturday bushfires of February 7, 2009, it documents sites that were impacted, and in some cases destroyed by the fires. It includes photographs taken especially for the publication, creating a unique time capsule representing the Shire in the early 21st century. It was taken up by Angus McMillan, who took up the Boisdale run across the Avon River at the same time, for his employer Lachlan Macalister. This house was built in 1848. March 1844 Licence to Bushy Park granted to McMillan. It consisted of 16,000 acres. Late 1840s Bushy Park homestead built for McMillan by Andrew Martin and Matt McCraw. High local historic significance as associated with major pioneer and a very old white settlement in Gippsland.A square shaped timber house, with a corrugated iron roof over shingles. It has a verandah that covers both the front and sides of the house.
