An Article in The Herald (18 Feb 1931) records that: "FAIRVIEW OFFICIALS - AT the annual meeting of the Associates of the Fairview Golf Club the following office bearers were elected: President, Miss A, Simcocks; secretary, Miss B. Williamson; captain, Miss A. Shiells; committee, Misses Tresise, Walters, Brown and McLachlan. The captain reported that the shield presented by Mr and Mrs Bourne for competition among the clubs associated with the metropolitan mental hospitals had been won by Fairview associates, who will hold it for one year."The trophy has historical significance as an item associated with the Melbourne Mental Hospital in the 1930s and also of social significance in that it relates to recreational pursuits undertaken by staff of the Hospital.Wood and silver plate shield won by the ladies team of Fairview Golf Club in the years 1930, 1931 and 1932. The Golf Club was established in 1928, and was owned and managed as part of the Kew Mental Hospital. The 9-hole golf course was located next to the Chandler Highway and is currently the site of the headquarters of Guide Dogs Victoria. Jock Clutterbuck is a sculptor and printmaker of national significance, known for his sophisticated abstract forms with underlying esoteric mysticism. Clutterbuck overlapped with Baldessin when he studied sculpture and printmaking at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, RMIT (1965-66). He taught at RMIT from (1969-73) before lecturing in sculpture at the Victorian College of the Arts (1974-2000). He is represented in many national and international public art collections and is a recipient of many National prizes and awards. George Baldessin (1939-1978) was a printmaker and sculptor who built his bluestone studio at St Andrews (Nillumbik) in 1971. The bluestone studio was hand built by George, his partner Tess and the three Hails brothers, Rob, Doug and Don. Made of recycled materials the studio today contains all of George’s equipment including the large press, which he modelled himself with the help of Neil Jeffrey (Enjay Presses). George won many prizes throughout his career and is represented in many of Australia's public art collections including his famous 'Pears' sculpture in front of the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. In 1975 he represented Australia in the Sao Paulo Biennale, before living and working in Paris until his return to St Andrews in 1977. In 1978 George was killed in a car accident aged 39 years. In 2001 Tess returned to St Andrews to reclaim the run-down studio and reconstitute it as The Baldessin Press & Studio - a printmaking retreat. It operates in George’s memory, so that artists may continue to create, perpetuating the generous spirit of George.‘Frosty Night Cartouche’ is one of eight prints in the 'Baldessin & Friends commemorative folio. The folio is a unique coming together of seven very different and acclaimed artists who are connected by their friendship to the missing eighth member, George Baldessin. Following a visit to the Press in 2015, Clutterbuck was reminded of a suite of paintings he had produced some thirty years earlier inspired by plein-air drawings of the night sky. This print attempts to capture something of the enchantment, mystery and drama of a frosty rural property where Clutterbuck spent many years. It is a frost dreaming; a subtle personal homage to Baldessin, embodying the reverence of a fellow artist towards an old friend. Since 1981 he has used his signature canvas boards to explore themes relevant to contemporary culture, from the centre/periphery debates of the 1980s to the effects of migration, displacement and diaspora. Most recently, his paintings have been concerned with place, locality and evocations of the landscape. Imants Tillers and Baldessin met on their way to the Bienal de Sao Paulo in 1975 and in the following year worked on two collaborative etching plates in Paris that were printed by Pierre Giarudon. 'Unsaid + Nameless' harks back to his experiences with Baldessin in Paris forty years ago. It is a poignant image of absence that can be read in the tradition of the momento mori. George Baldessin (1939-1978) was born in San Biagio di Callalta, in the Veneto in Northern Italy and arrived in Australia ten years later. Painter, printmaker and installation artist John Wolseley was born in Somerset, England. He lived and worked throughout Europe before relocating to Australia in 1976. His work explores how people dwell and move within landscape. Wolseley see's himself as a hybrid mix of artist and scientist; one who tries to relate the minutiae of the natural world - leaf, feather and beetle wing - to the abstract dimensions of the earth's dynamic systems. Using techniques of watercolour, collage, frottage, nature printing and other methods of direct physical or kinetic contact Wolseley finds ways of collaborating with the actual plants, birds, trees, rocks and earth of a particular place. George Baldessin was one of the first artists John Wolseley met when he arrived in Australia in 1976. Both immigrated to Australia and connected through this shared experience. They were both at 'Realities Gallery' with Marianne Baillieu in the 1970s and 80s. Communion and collaboration with nature are central to Wolseley's practice. He assembles different drawing methods to represent a kind of inventory or document about the state of the earth. His interest is to paint the processes and energy field of the living systems of this land. 'Life world of the Longicorn beetle' is his continued exploration of Australia's natural eco-systems. The beetle attacks the eucalypt and in the process of tunnelling into the wood of the tree leaves scribbly patterns. The work celebrates the cycle of life, and the wisdom and delicacy of these creatures. This three dimensional work consisting of three layers of paper is a varied edition, offering just the slightest difference between each print, reflective of variation in nature. The found log used as a woodcut acknowledges the interconnectedness of nature and living beings; the log is not apart from the art and the beetle has become an active artistic collaborator. Awarded to: School Children of the Commonwealth of Australia Other Details: Of the commemorative medals issued to mark the end of the First World War, the most common was the so-called 'Peace' or 'Victory' medal issued to every child in Australia aged 0-14 years (and aged up to 16 if parents were in the armed forces). The medal was designed by Charles Douglas Richardson, better known for his work as a sculptor. Time constraints as well as pressure from the production of other victory medals meant that no single manufacturer could make the 1,670,000 medals. Six were therefore selected: Amor, Stokes, Schlank, Parkes, Angus & Coote (who later withdrew) and Platers. The medals were silvered bronze, with silver issues for special presentations. The Defence Department supplied a red, white and blue striped ribbon and pin. Distribution began in March 1919. Victorian school children received their medals on Friday 18 July and on 'Peace Day' on Saturday 19 July.To commemorate the end of World War 1Round white metal medals issued to mark the end of WW1. Sir Edward Mitchell was the chairman of the Edward Wilson trust, which enabled the building of the Braille Library during a time of great economic turbulence due to the last months of World War 1. This commemorative trowel was given to him in thanks for his (and the trust's support) of the project, which would ultimately provide a great resource to blinded soldiers who were prepared and able to learn Braille. Carnegie melbourne Commemorative Plate Decorative plate ...The item was created by Bouwens and van Kampen, a ceramics business founded in Bussum by Greta Klaar. Greta married her pupil Johannes Bouwens in Amsterdam during the war. The couple then moved to Soest where the business became known as "De vlieg-uut". It went from strength to strength until a fatal accident in 1970 after which it was permanently closed. The designers and ceramicists specialised in small plates such as this commemorative one for Queen Juliana's accession to the throne following the abdication of her mother, Queen Wilhelmina.The item recalls the joyful celebrations that took place in Septermber 1948 when Juliana accepted the throne from her mother Queen Wilhelmina. The Queen had reigned for 50 years including the period of 1940-45 (WWII) during which she carried out her duties from London. Juliana and her family resided in Ottawa, Canada during those years. To some extent this event was the final celebration of liberation from the tyranny of occupation and the welcoming back of the Royal family to Dutch soil. Decorative plate to commemorate Queen Juliana's ascension of the Dutch throne in 1948. The plate is meant to be hung and has a piece of string for this purpose inserted through the rim on the back of the plate. The inscription reads: "Juliana Koningin 6 Sept.1948". On the back are the marks: "290KR." "BVK Soest" and "P.H.". It is gaily painted in red, blue and green on an off-white background. The central scene is recognisably Amsterdam with church tower, stepped gables and Dutch flags. The border consists of a circle of red, white and blue flowers; leaves are green. -

Until she became of age 8 years later her mother, Queen Emma, ruled as Queen Regent. The Dutch are traditionally proud of their Royal Family and this is one of the commemorative items with which the country honoured the Queen's silver jubilee in 1923 Shaped as a soup plate the carved out bottom carries an image of Queen Wilhelmina and the inscription "1898-1923". A branch of oranges with a golden W placed in its centre partly encircles the image. The plate is edged with three green circles. "1898-1923". -

De Sphinx operated under the name Petrus Regout & Co. until 1899. The firm was noted for its transfer-printed earthenware. Many factories in Maastricht are still making ceramics. The plate was created to celebrate the silver jubilee of Queen Wilhelmina in 1923.A ceramic plate decorated in blue with pictures and words. Central to the image is a coat of arms featuring a central lion and 4 identical hunting horns. The whole is surmounted by a crown. The rim is decorated with orange blossoms.The words read: "Mijn schilt en de betrouwen Syt Ghy O God myn Heer. Op U soo wil ick bouwen Verlaat my nimmermeer." These are words from the second verse of the National Anthem recorded in Old Dutch. The dates 1898-1923 also feature on the front of the plate. The back bears the maker's stamp, an imprint of a small arrow, an imprint of ¾ and the words "Made in Holland". The maker's stamp reads: "Petrus Regout & Co Maastricht". It is surmounted by a sphinx. There are also two holes in the rim to enable hanging of the plate. -

The Dutch are generally content with their Royal family and usually celebrate the birth of a new member of the ruling family. Beatrix was Queen Wilhelmina's first grandchild and destined to succeed the Queen's daughter and her mother Crown Princess Juliana. This is exactly what happened and Beatrix's own eldest child is the current (2018) King Willem Alexander. It was not unusual to present members of the populace with a commemorative item such as this plate.Round plate with orange crown in centre. The crown is surrounded with the inscription Beatrix Wihelmina Armgard 31 Jan.1938. Around that are orange apples and green leaves. The outside of the plate is outlined with an orange border.On the back are the words "Geschonken door de Gemeente Nijmegen ter Gelegenheid van Prinsesjes Geboorte". The ceramic plate commemorates the 150th anniversary of the State of Victoria, with an original painting of the Royal Exhibiton Building in Melbourne on the front, by the Victorian artist Charles McCubbin (1930-2010). Charles McCubbin was the grandson of the Australian painter Frederick McCubbin (1855-1917). The ceramic plate commemorating the 150th anniversary of the State of Victoria has state and national signifcance as one of 5000 plates worldwide released by the Moliver Collection. A commemorative plaque from the old Wodonga Golf House, built in 1946. The club house and the golf course were extended in 1956 to the area of Belvoir Park. It was demolished in 1987 to make room for the new Hume Highway. This plaque was salvaged from the club house building before demolition.
