Martha Watson was born on 17 October 1888 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia as the first child of Robina (Ruby) WATSON. She died on 23 March 1976 in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Memories of Martha by Valcia nee Twigg Lowrie, granddaughter of Arthur Watson. My memories and recollections as told to me my Grandmother ‘Mum’ Myers. As a child she had scarlet fever and did not attend school during the illness and missed a lot of school (Macarthur Street State School). When she was meant to return to school having fallen behind her classmates, confused and behind with the school work, she instead spent her time wandering around Lake Wendouree feeling too ashamed to attend school. Her uncle Arthur, born in 1874, whom she idealized, was a type of father/mentor figure who played and important part in her early life. He moved to Queensland in the early 1900’s and they did not meet again until he visited Melton in 1949, he died in 1954. He was a champion rower in Victoria and Queensland and a noted cyclist who rode in three Warrnambool to Melbourne races, and footballer. Her mother’s death certificate reveals her place of death as the Ballarat Hospital on 8th September 1903 aged 36. Martha was not told of the death of her mother, it was some time later when she found out her mother had died. She was greatly distressed when she eventually found out. The grief and the circumstance of her mothers death and her unfortunate life had a permanent effect on Martha’s life. Robina was buried in Open Ground at the New Cemetery Ballarat. Marjorie likened to this to the death of Mozart at the age of 35 who was also buried in a common grave. Martha also told me the stories about how as a child she played at the cemetery, taking the oranges placed as offerings on the Chinese graves and being chased away in fright when caught by a Chinese man. Her description left a vivid impression on my mind. The Burnbank street house was just across the road from the cemetery. The pieces of this story I had heard made sense when I visited the location in recent years. Martha’s described how Nanna would sing on the front verandah, and send her off to t get drink for her. This situation might help explain the reason for Martha’s strong aversion to alcohol. As a young girl it had been distressing to her. Nanna was a colourful and theatrical personality and danced with the Duke when he visited Ballarat. She was also known to have stated that she would marry a man who could give her a bucket of gold, possibly around the time after her first husband, Charles death, she had her young boy Edward to bring up. Martha was about 13 years old when Nanna Watson left Ballarat going to Queensland to visit her son Arthur. Martha slept that night afraid and alone in the empty house. The person who was meant to collect her did not come until the next day. She went to work for a family, a woman with children, they took most of the money that Nanna had left with Martha. There was a new baby in the house and the Scottish man in the house behaved suspiciously towards Martha. She was afraid of him and would hide from him under the bed. At this young age she managed to survive on her wits and sense of self preservation. It is not known how long she worked with this family. The place was from my impression, away from the town of Ballarat. Her very difficult formative years are testament to her strength of character and determination to succeed in life and ambition to provide the best opportunities for her own children. In 1905 Martha received a post card from Uncle Arthur in Brisbane addressed – c/o Mrs Styles 14 High Street Ballarat. Dolly Styles was a Ballarat friend and she kept in contact with her for many years. A letter reveals her living in Minyip in her older years. Martha is thought to have spent a few years working before she arrived in Melton. Miss Shebler hired Martha to help her in the care of her father and to assist with work in the Golden Fleece Hotel. Mr Shebler was a nice old man and mostly confined to his room and somewhat childlike as described by Martha. [The elderly Mr August Shebler died in February 1908]. Martha’s exact arrival in Melton is not known, but could be estimated as late 1906 to early 1907. In her room at the hotel she could hear the spring cart of Mr Minns going on the milk delivery rounds in the very early hours of the morning after coming across the creek from his house When she was 19, she married Frederick Thomas MYERS, son of Henri MIERS and Ann DOWLING, on 30 April 1908 ( Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia). She also got the birth/marriage and death certificates of the Ballarat connection of Robina’s husbands and children. Copies were sent to Edna and Wendy during the early 1990’s. The Donation Book relates to the Ballarat School of Mines Museum which opened in 1872. Very few of these items are still held by Federation University. Ian and Jean McDonald were the children of Mr and Mrs Norman McDonald of 42 Gladstone Street, Orbost. This photograph was taken in late January, 1919 on Jean's first day at school.. This project started from the discovery of named photographs which were discovered behind an Honour Roll at the Koroit Primary School during renovations in 2009. These two volumes contain enlistments in the First World War, from the area of Koroit, Port Fairy, Macarthur, Penshurst and surrounding hamlets. It stretches from Codrington in the West through to Byaduk, Penshurst, Caramut in the north, and down though Woolsthorpe, Winslow and Dennington. It includes the personal family details, military records, photographs where possible, and fate of each soldier. Enlistments from the district numbered 250 men who paid the supreme sacrifice and 1100 who returned. It includes citations for bravery, excerpts from correspondence and local press.The significance and value of these two volumes lies in the fact that they bring together a large amount of information from various sources and link them effectively to the area of the Western district. They tell the stories of the many district soldiers of the first world war.Volume 1 Cover has collage of photographs of soldiers over coloured with different shades of green. Title text is white on black banner. Back cover is in shades of green, yellow and black with photograph of soldier and his bride in the centre. 348 pages Volume 2 has the same front cover with a family plaque on the back cover commemorating the four Dix brothers. This display case stood in the foyer of the Fletcher Jones shop in Flaxman Street, Warrnambool which was in the factory complex. The fleece came from the property of Jim Wilson of Camperdown . It is from a merino flock bred from original flock dating back to the time of John MacArthur, founder of the Australian wool industry. David Fletcher Jones, ( 1895 -1977) established his men's clothing shop in Warrnambool in the 1920s and from this grew an Australia wide company Fletcher Jones and Staff which was famous for its men's wear and later women's clothing. By 2011 the Warrnambool factory was closed and the company dissolved.This item is of particular interest as it came from a Fletcher Jones shop. Fletcher Jones factory and shop were part of a major industry in Warrnambool's history. As the notice in the display case says the fleece "represents living evidence of a mile stone in Australia's laudable history of fine wool growing"This is a large glass display case, mounted on a wooden base. This book was given as a school prize to Walter Wright by the Wangoom School in 1873. The name ‘Wangoon’ is on the printed book plate – is this a misprint or an alternative spelling of ‘Wangoom’? Wangoom State School, No. 645, on the Warrnambool/Wangoom Road was opened in 1865 as a Common School. The school is now closed. The Hon. William Bayles, a Melbourne businessman with property near Macarthur, first became a member of the Legislative Council for Villiers and Heytesbury in 1864 and continued until 1880. He was a prominent and popular politician in Warrnambool, regularly giving prizes to pupils of schools in his electorate and in 1872 he offered a £10 prize for the best student in the district. No specific information has been found on Walter Wright or any family named Wright residing in the Wangoom area. There was a piano tuner named W. Wright in the Warrnambool area in the 1870s. Was this Walter’s father? This book is of interest because of the connection with Wangoom School, the Hon. William Bayles and Walter Wright. More interest will be created if information comes to light on water Wright. This is a hard cover book of 333 pages plus 32 pages of advertisements for books published by Henry S. King and Co. The cover is dark red with an ornamental pattern in black on the front cover and lettering in gold on the front cover and spine. The book has three full page black and white illustrations with the illustration next to the first page missing. There is a printed book plate pasted onto the inside of the front cover with blue printing and ornamentation and a handwritten name and date. This waistcoat was made for Mr Alan Vinnell by the Fletcher Jones Man’s Shop in 1946 and was worn by Mr Vinnell at his wedding in Lang Lang on 27/4/1946 to Miss Madge Ridgway. Alan was the son of Albert Vinnell and Ada Rose Wood. He attended school in Macarthur about 40 kilometres northwest of Warrnambool. The Fletcher Jones Man’s Shop was located at the corner of Liebig and Koroit Streets in Warrnambool. David Fletcher Jones (1895-1977) served in World War One and in the 1920s set up as a travelling hawker selling drapery in Western Victoria. In 1924 he leased three shops in Liebig Street and in 1928 he moved to the Koroit/Liebig Streets intersection with his Man’s Shop. He manufactured men’s clothing on site. In 1931 a new set of two-storeyed buildings was erected on the site and Fletcher Jones moved into the building. In 1946 a Fletcher Jones shop was opened in Melbourne and in 1948 a factory was established in Raglan Parade, Warrnambool with a new company, Fletcher Jones and Staff established in 1951. This company became known Australia-wide, firstly for the production of men’s trousers, and later men’s and women’s clothing. By 2011 the Warrnambool factory was sold and the company dissolved. This waistcoat is of historical interest as an example of the high quality work produced at the Fletcher Jones Man’s Shop in Warrnambool in the mid 1940s. The Fletcher Jones business became one of the most important ones in Warrnambool in the 20th century and the early 21st century.This is a sleeveless woollen waistcoat made of blue striped material with a black cotton backing. The back has two black cotton flaps with a metal buckle to allow for the tightening of the coat across the back. The inside is lined with a cream, yellow and grey striped cotton material. The waistcoat has one inside pocket with a button enclosure and four outside pockets. This booklet contains the first draft of an article on Samuel Baulch’s acquisition of his property, Rose Park which was in the Macarthur/Hawkesdale district. Samuel Baulch’s parents, Francis and Ann Baulch were pioneer settlers in the Kirkstall area and Samuel worked at the Dunmore Station in the Macarthur area before purchasing the property he named Rose Park in the early 1870s. In the 1890s he acquired property in the Dunmore Estate. Samuel’s son, Stan Baulch, acquired sections of the Dunmore property after his father’s death and he named his section, Rose Park, a property to the west of the original Rose Park. This article is of historical interest and will be useful to researchers of local and family history. This is a booklet of 18 pages. These items concern the history of the Baulch family ownership of Cowabee, a large grazing property in the Riverina in N.S.W. In the 1870s Samuel Baulch, the son of pioneer Kirkstall settlers, Francis and Ann Baulch, established a property in the Macarthur/Hawkesdale area called Rose Park. In 1893 he acquired Dunmore, a nearby property, and Rose Park became part of that estate. In 1910 Samuel Baulch purchased Cowabee in N.S.W. and Stan Baulch, the son of Samuel and Eliza, later managed Cowabee for some years. After Samuel’s death Stan Baulch and his two brothers split up Dunmore and Stan acquired the eastern third which he named Rose Park. Cowabee was sold in 1922. This booklet and associated material is of some historical interest as a summary of the history of Cowabee, one of the properties owned by the Baulch family of the Western District in the early 20th century. It will be of some use to researchers, with the photographs an added bonus. .1 This is a booklet of 41 pages with a buff-coloured paper cover with a black tape binding. The front cover has a title in hand-printed lettering and the back cover has a red stamp (partly obliterated). Both these items deal with the property of Dunmore, in the Macarthur/Hawkesdale/ Woolsthorpe area of Western Victoria. The first item is a sheet of paper with a map and details of the sale of portion of Dunmore in 1954. This is an original document. The second item is a history written by Stan Baulch of the property Dunmore from its establishment up to 1970. Dunmore was first established by Charles Hamilton MacKnight and two partners in 1842 and it was purchased by Samuel Baulch in 1893. After Samuel Baulch’s death the property was bequeathed to his three sons. One son, Stanley Baulch (1897-1980) took over the eastern portion which he named Rose Park. Stan Baulch was a member of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society and wrote several articles on aspects of his life and work, including this valuable article on the history of Dunmore. These items are of significance as they concern the estate of Dunmore in Western Victoria, an early and important property which is still farming land today under various owners. .1 This is a sheet of paper containing a map of the Dunmore property on one side and details of the sale of portion of Dunmore on the other side. These documents come from a collection of material from the Baulch families of Dunmore and Rose Park estates in Western Victoria in the Macarthur district. They concern the sales of the Green Hills Estate (1910) and the Olangolah estate (1915) near Woolsthorpe. Both were offered for sale by the owner, Colin Tulloh. The properties bordered on Baulch property belonging to Stan Baulch (1897-1980) and hence this is the reason for their being included in Baulch estate material. This card has a sketch map showing the properties surrounding Dunmore on one side and a detailed sketch plan of Dunmore homestead in the early 1970s on the other side. The plan of Dunmore homestead shows interesting features such as the brick oven for bread making, the croquet lawn, the site of the aboriginal mia mias, the Turkish baths and the fowl house used later as a poison house. Francis and Ann Baulch were pioneer settlers in the Kirkstall area and their son Samuel worked at Dunmore in the Macarthur area before purchasing in the early 1870s the property he named Rose Park. In the 1890s he acquired property in the Dunmore estate and his son Stan Baulch gained a section of the Dunmore property after his father’s death. Stan Baulch named this Dunmore section, Rose Park, a property to the west of his father’s original Rose Park property. Stan Baulch was a long time member of the Warrnambool & District Historical Society and he contributed many local history articles and donated many local artefacts to the Society.This sketch plan is of interest as it tells us what the historic homestead of Dunmore in Western Victoria was like in the early 1970s. It will be useful for research. This is a sheet of white lightweight cardboard with a pencilled sketch on one side and a blue ink sketch plan of a house on the other side. The edges of the card have some torn sections. The card is enclosed in an oval cardboard cylinder (recycled and torn at the ends). Both the card and the cover have handwritten titles in ink. This blouse was made by Annie Beryl Mathieson from silk material which came originally from China via family relatives. Annie Beryl Mathieson, born in Western Australia in 1910, married John Harman in Nullawarre in 1939 and made the blouse which she wore under a navy costume for her 'going-away' outfit. They lived at Macarthur and Annie Beryl died in 1983. This blouse is of interest as an example of women's fashions in in the late 1930s and of handmade clothing in the same era.This is a cream silk blouse. This coat came from the McFadyen/Mathieson family. Lois McFadyen' s mother was Annie Beryl Mathieson who married John Harman in Nullawarre in 1939. Annie Beryl died in Macarthur in 1983. The coat may have been made from rabbit fur.This coat is retained as a fine example of an item of women's clothing worn as a fashion statement in the early to mid 20th century.This is a brown fur coat with a collar and long sleeves. These items were hand sewn by Annie Beryl Mathieson, the daughter of Alexander and Elizabeth Mathieson who lived at Naringal. The silk came from China, via family connections. This poster was made for the sale of the 1,440 acres of Orbost Station after the death of Sir William Clarke. It was sold by Edward Trenchard & Co. which was the oldest Stock and Station agent in Victoria assisted by Desailly, Macarthur & Co were livestock experts. Sir William Clarke had taken over the Orbost run from the McLeods in 1870. When Sir William died the property was owned by his son, Rupert who offered the land for sale at 4 pounds per acre. No sale resulted and the property was leased for a few years until in 1898 it was subdivided and sold to many of Orbost's first families.
