This is a badge issued to members of the Warrnambool Racing Club for the 1956-7 season. Race meetings have been held in Warrnambool since the early days of European settlement, from 1848 on, with the Warrnambool Racing Club formed in 1854. The present day race track was first used in the late 1850s. The most important meeting of the Warrnambool Racing Club is the May Racing Carnival held over three days with the main feature being the well-known Warrnambool Grand Annual Steeplechase. This is a local badge and is retained as an example of a member’s badge of the Warrnambool Racing Club in the mid 1950s. This is a round metal badge with gold lettering on a black background and a black, green and gold image of a horse and rider clearing a hurdle. A collection of nine postcards donated by the Bass Coast Op Shop. Information on the back of No. 276-05. "Koala Bears were first seen by white explorers in the Blue Mountains, 1798. Early colonists from N.S.W. called it a "monkey bear". Koala means in Aboriginal "does not drink" or "no drink". They are slow-moving, tree-climbing, friendly marsupials with thick woolly fur coats, large ears and rubber nose. They live in gum trees and feed upon their leaves. First held in 1972 the Bendigo International Madison is an athletics and cycling carvial which takes place in Bendigo ove the March Labour Day long weekend. Events include 400m footraces and the largest outdoor Madison event in the world. The madison is a track cycling race in which 17 pairs of riders race over a hectic 200 laps of the Tom Flood Sports Centre in Bendigo. Riders firstly try to gain a lap advantage over other teams or score sprint points during the 34 sprints dotted throughout the race. John Phyland It was during 1890 to 1918 that John Phyland, son of Irish immigrants, born in 1866, ran a 2000-acre sheep station. The property, Lake Vale, was south of Balranald, towards the Murray River town of Swan Hill. This would seem to be an unlikely location for a harness racing breeding operation, being more than 400km from Melbourne, where harness racing was centred on the Richmond track. But, undeterred by distance, Phyland purchased his first trotter in 1882 and proceeded to acquire expensive, high quality standardbred mares and stallions and embark on a venture that saw him: • Breed and race winners of major races including The Melbourne Thousand, Bendigo JC Handicap (raced almost continuously on the grass track at Epsom, Bendigo, from 1867 to 1946), Boort Cup and numerous races at the Melbourne metropolitan tracks at Richmond and Ascot; • Acquire Soultline Villa and training stables adjacent to the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds so he could race at metropolitan tracks; • Develop a large self-contained training facility (including resident blacksmith) and home at 19 Raleigh St, Essendon; • Become the chair of the Victorian Trotting Horse Owners and Breeders’ Association, which lobbied strenuously for night trotting in the 1930s; • Breed from imported and locally bred mares that left families that are still active today. Although the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme was first proposed in 1911, construction did not commence until 1938. As part of the push to cut electricity costs and diversify supply, the Victorian Government (circa 1930) initiated the conversion from primarily brown coal supply to hydro – electricity. Field investigations during the 1940’s resulted in a new proposal for a scheme that had more than double the capacity of the 1938 scheme. The Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme became the largest scheme of its kind in the State Of Victoria and the second largest scheme in Australia. The number of personnel involved in the planning and construction of the scheme increased dramatically. During the late 1940’s, most activity centred around the construction of the West Kiewa Power Station, Rocky Valley Reservoir, McKay Creek Power Station and the Bogong Creek Aqueduct.A common thread across all the larger hydro scheme constructions was the need for workers, both qualified and unqualified who came from around the world seeking a new life for themselves and their families. New accommodation and facilities were required for the army of workers engaged in construction in often remote and wild areas. The SEC had a high demand for timber, and set up the first of a number of sawmills at Bogong Creek in 1939 and set up the first hardwood logging in the headwaters of the Kiewa River. These new ‘towns’ such as Mt Beauty and Bogong, survived, serving the needs of operational personnel and their families, and expanding with growth of new industries. Mount Beauty, and to a lesser extent Bogong, are among these places. Published in "The Sun", Wednesday, August 11, 1976, pp 38-39 [Text of article:] A WINDOW ON THE PAST by Roger Sanders. A fascinating window has been opened on the early life of the Eltham district. It is a rare collection of 3,000 perfectly preserved glass plate photograph negatives. The collection is the work of the late Albert Jones, a Diamond Creek orchardist and amateur photographer. About 500 of the negatives have been printed and 100 are on display at Gallery 4, Eltham, as part of the Eltham Festival, which started on Friday. They capture in fine detail rural and village life around Eltham, Hurstbridge, Kangaroo Ground, Yarra Glen and Diamond Valley from 1900 to 1930. While the natural beauty of the district was painted in this period by Arthur Streeton (later Sir Arthur), Tom Roberts and Charles Conder, among others, photography was relatively new. Yet Albert Jones used the new medium to compile a weighty album of pioneers at work, at home, at sport and on holidays. He was at the first Yarra Glen race meeting, early Diamond Valley football matches and photographed soldiers from the district leaving for war. He photographed early gold mines, men with horses laying the Diamond Creek-Hurstbridge rail track and the arrival of the first steam train at Hurstbridge. He took his cameras on holiday around Victoria and the collection includes scenes from St. Kilda and Portsea and many country towns. The Jones collection of negatives was found by Mr A. J. "Ned" Spark, of Balwyn, under a house he bought from Mr Jones' widow. The plates almost went to the tip with a pile of rubbish before Mr Spark realised their potential value. Mr Spark, who is retired, will continue the identification and recording of the photographs when he returns from holidays. Len Lukey was a Victorian Racing Car Driver in the 1950s & 1960s and established his Car Exhaust Muffler business in his backyard in Highett c 1970. In 1964 he purchased the site and then developed and operated the Phillip Island Car Racing Track until his death 1978. He designed the Lukey Racing Car Museum and Gardens at that site. The 1959 Australian Drivers Championship was a CAMS sanctioned motor racing title for drivers of Formula Libre cars. The championship winner was awarded the 1959 CAMS Gold Star. The series was won by Victorian racer Len Lukey driving his Cooper T45 Climax and in the opening round of the series his own much modified Cooper T23 which was known as the Lukey-Bristol. Lukey was one of only a few drivers who attempted to complete the gruelling twelve race schedule, the longest in ADC history. Lukey finished just two points ahead of his season long rival, Alec Mildren from the ACT [1] (Cooper-Climax). Stan Jones, the father of F1 World Champion Alan Jones, was third in the championship, using four different cars over the course of the series. Race victories were shared around with Mildren taking three wins. Lukey, Jones and Bill Patterson each took two wins, with single victories going to Jack Brabham, Bib Stillwell and New Zealand Maserati 250F racer Ross Jensen. Jack Brabham later became F1 World Champion 3 times. Letter located in correspondence file ( 21.5.2019 by curator) 'This cutter was used to cut plug tobacco suitable for smoking in a pipe. It belonged to John Temple Rileywo died at the age of 97 at Hobart, Tasmania, October 1970. John Temple Riley led an eventful life. As a youth he trained and rode race horses at the Higginbotham stables quite near the Morphetville racecourse. He won one South Australian St. Ledger and rode the famous Carbine at track training only. In 1967 he was the only living person who had been astride Carbine. He served in Africa with the Tasmanian Imperial Bushmen. He was a sergeant in the Australian Light Horse Regiment in the Egyptian and Eastern Desert and at Gallipoli. He won an Italian decoration as well as Australian citations, he was promoted to Lieutenant J.H. Riley. He met with success in the mining field with his tin strike at Heemskirk on the West Coast.' Station Sign - Emerald Emerald Station is situated on the Puffing Billy Railway in Victoria, Australia. It was opened with the Railway on 18 December 1900 and comprised a platform track and a loop siding. A passing loop was added between the two a few years later. There was also a spur siding off the Down end of No. 3 Road. Two standard 12 ft by 20 ft timber portable station buildings with a Van Goods Shed between (all adjoining) were provided on the platform and a Goods Shed on the No. 3 Road loop siding. Other buildings included Tea Rooms, lamp room and toilets along with a cattle race and loading bank. The station building was later reduced in length by one of the portables which housed the General and Ladies' waiting rooms. Emerald today remains very similar to the early days, but has had other Roads added into a Carriage Workshops, a turntable and storage sidings. Also, a Signal and Telegraph Branch depot in the form of a large Goods Shed and a multi-purpose yard building in the form of a Locomotive Depot administration building have been added. The winner of the race - Jack Baker was a cycling commentator In the 1920s, in the 1930s he cycled around Australia. In 1937 he rode in Europe and England representing Bruce Small for Malvern Star. Jack was well known for his commentary at races at the Geelong velodrome track after the war. The presentation of this trophy is another indicator of the popularity and importance placed on cycling races in regional areas during the early to mid 20th century.Silver plated cup on bakelite stand with engravings on the cup. Track cycle won by Jack Phillips 1929 in the Melbourne - Ballarat - Geelong - Melbourne Road Race. This was the first open road race won by a Geelong Amateur Cyclist. The Amateur Cycling Club was formed in 1929. This bike was restored by Ken Dickie who did his apprenticeship in fine line restorations and the painting was by Fred Cook. Hand grips by Harry Clarke.
