This photograph shows part of the railway constructed and used for the removal of soil and rocks from the tunnels bored out of the mountains for the pipeline servicing the Hydro Electricity power stations in the Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme. This photo details an era when there were 4,000 construction workers located in two main accommodation camps, Mount Beauty (the larger one) and Bogong village. These accommodation sites were constructed and maintained as a secured or gated residential area with access only available by a special pass authorised by the Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme. All the power used by the rail system was from electric motors connected to batteries. Overhead power poles seen on either side of the embankment details that electricity from the Scheme was in use. This use was cleaner and more environmentally friendly than the coal still used by large locomotives from city to country railways. The worker shown is not however wearing protective head and hand coverings. The Refreshment Services Branch was established in 1920, and initially focused on providing station-based refreshment rooms and the dining car service. Its scope expanded to include diverse activities such as stall rental; sales of advertising space on railways infrastructure; laundry services; operation of a hair-dressing salon, a bakery, a butchery and a poultry farm; and the management of the chalet guesthouse at Mt Buffalo. The majority of staff worked in refreshment rooms and dining cars, both of which were a popular feature of the railway service. Previous to 1920 refreshment services had been provided by contractors, but after many complaints the Department decided to provide a standardised service across the system. It grew quickly: five years after it was established the Branch employed approximately 500 staff. Station refreshment facilities ranged from elaborate dining rooms to decorated push-carts. They were staffed predominately by women, who provided everything from a cup of tea to a three course meal. Most refreshment room services were closed in the 1970s. Reference from : Fielding, K. The courier bag was once government property, as indicated by the broad arrow symbol. The flap has the name 'Boronia' - an area near Melbourne - overstamped with the town name 'Merino', and on the other side of the flap is the town 'Casterton'. Merino and Casterton are renowned for large sheep farming properties in Victoria's western district. Perhaps the courier bag was originally used between Melbourne and Boronia. During the late 19th and early-to-mid 20th centuries, a government-operated railway service was active in in the western district of Victoria. It served remote properties, including a line between Merino and Casterton. The train delivered mail, cash, supplies documents, business records and people between the sheep farm properties and the township of Casterton.This courier bag is an example of the connections and business between people in the remote areas of western Victoria. Part of the Victorian Railways silver service. When the Victorian railways took over management of the Chalet from 1 October 1924, they ran their dining room and cafe in similar fashion to the dining cars on their trains and refreshment rooms on their stations, using the same ceramic hotel-ware and electro plated nickel silverware (EPNS), all made to order items that are clearly idenitified by the distinctive 'VR' monogram. For residents of Northeast Victoria, railway services have provided a critical link between the area and state capital cities. CountryLink was established in January 1989 under the Transport Administration Act 1988. It was a passenger rail and road service brand that operated in regional areas of New South Wales, and to and from Canberra, Brisbane and Melbourne. CountryLink operated rail services a fleet of XPT and locomotive-hauled passenger trains. The Southern region of the Country Link network covered New South Wales districts of Illawarra, South Coast, Snowy Mountains, South West Slopes, Southern Tablelands, Riverina and Sunraysia regions plus the Australian Capital Territory and parts of Victoria. The Government of Victoria contributed to the provision of these services. Services ran along the Main South line from Sydney Central station to Albury before continuing on the North East line to Southern Cross station in Melbourne. The Sydney/Melbourne Express ceased in November 1993 and was replaced by an XPT in November 1993 In December 1994, a daylight service to Melbourne resumed by extending the Riverina XPT from Albury. Was attached to a wall near reception but was removed to storage in approx.. 2000 - 2002. The bell has strong associations with the Victorian Railways Era reflecting the service and ethos of Railways with its uniformed Porters welcoming and on duty as Night Porter and day for all guests needs. (Especially lost keys) assistance with luggage, room service and co-ordinating transit and transport with Railways buses and services. A personal recollection is of Joseph the Night Porter welcoming and assisting when as a family with four sleeping children we would arrive after midnight to the Chalet where rooms would be ready, beds turned down and all unpacking of the car supervised by Joseph. Skeggs) "A number of specific items, which have been useful in the day to day operations of the Chalet, remain in the building with each complementing the other to provide context ,meaning and character to their setting. Items such as the hall porter bell, the many signs providing information to the guests, the wall clock, barometer and dinner bell point to the Chalet being a well-run social institution with a pleasant environment for rest, recreation and congenial company." A saloon or end platform NB which has had a guard's compartment temporarily added in one end. Due to the temporary nature of this conversion, this vehicle also retains its original number in the NB numbering sequence but is classed NBD to differentiate it from the standard NBC and the NAC. The use of the letter 'D' in the classification is recognising the code for guard's vans prior to 1910. DH31 - DH59 Diesel Hydraulic locomotive Built to 3'6" gauge in 1970 this Diesel Hydraulic locomotive entered service for the Queensland Railways where it remained until withdrawn in 1994. Purchased by the E.T.R.B. in 1995, it was converted to 2'6" gauge in Queensland and transported to Belgrave in 1996 for overhaul. It re-entered service later in 1996, although instead of receiving a V.R. type classification & number and V.R. style livery, it retained its Q.R. number of DH59 and its Q.R. livery minus the Q.R. logo, but has since been repainted the traditional Blue & Gold of V.R. diesel locomotives and reclassified DH31. It has since been returned to DH 59. The DH class was a class of diesel-hydraulic locomotives built by Walkers Limited, Maryborough for Queensland Railways between 1966 and 1974. Sold by V.R and privately bought and used in the construction of a house at 80 Dare Street, Ocean Grove Puffing Billy Preservation Society Service History or Notes Sept 2010 - Ocean Grove house demolition results in PBPS being contacted that there were two carriages (6 NB & 8 NB) in the house. PBPS arrange to buy the two carriages bodies from the Demolition company Nov 2010 - Two carriages have been rescued from 80 Dare Street, Ocean Grove where they had been built into a house. Many people were involved in the move: thanks go to Raymond and Thelma Cotter for providing tarps to protect the cars from the elements. Dec 2010 - Two carriages rescued from Ocean Grove are now at Emerald, one being a platform NB car (6NB) and the other 8 NB a 2nd Class swing door carriage. Minor refurbishment has taken place along with covering with Tarpaulins. 29 Jan 2020 - 8 NB - passenger carriage - Body only is moved by the PBPS Heritage Rolling Stock Committee from Emerald Station sidings and placed into storage in a warehouse at Officer to enable it to be investigated into its possible restoration. 29 Feb 2020 - investigation on the carriage by the PBPS Heritage Rolling Stock Committee found the number of the carriage 8 NB stamped on the inside of the side of the windows frames. The Chalet retains a good selection of of the diverse range of EPNS item formerly used in the dining room..- which in all their variety and function help to interpret the dining room protocols of the 'tourist house' and the service provied by the Victorian Railways refreshment and Services Branch.
