This demijohn was made for Sharpe Bros., brewers of non- alcoholic drinks such as Dandelion Ale, ginger beer and cordial. Sharpe Bros began in New Zealand and expanded to Australia in the early 20th century. The company was taken over by Cadbury Schweppes in 1972. The likely manufacturer of this demijohn was Hoffman's Pottery of Brunswick.This item was recovered from the abandoned barn of the Pope family in 1971, when the property was sold to the Shire of Diamond Valley. This barn was located on the northern side of Pope Place and sketched by Ron Reynolds for the book "Greensborough and Greenhills".Glazed stoneware jar with dark brown glaze to top, narrow threaded neck with wire handle. Early in the 1970s a number of people felt the need in the Greensborough community for an Arts Society, Prominent among them were were Ron Reynolds, Digby Watson, Murray Pulford, Roland and Maria Schultz. An article appeared in the Greenhills Community News seeking those interested in participating in such a society. The Ballarat School of Mines was established in 1870 through the initiatives of the Ballarat Mining Board making it the oldest site of technical education in Australia. The Board was concerned with the shortage of mine managers for the goldfields. Classes began in surveying, mathematics, and chemistry and a decade later they included metallurgy , assaying and geology. With the decline in goldmining the direction of the college changed and broadened, the art School was established and the Ballarat Junior Technical School developed. In 1976, the tertiary sector seperated from the School of Mines and Industries Ballarat to form the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In the 1980s SMB was a Community College of Technical Education and Further Education (TAFE) offering a wide range of vocational, enrichment and preparatory programs. It is continuing the tradition of providing for the educaiton needs of people within the Central Highlands. During the 1970s and 80s it acquired and refurbished old buildings and developed new facilities to keep up with the needs of an expanding curriculum and student population. This is one of four surf oars now on display at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village. The oars were once owned by the Warrnambool surf Live Saving Club. They are painted in the original club colours of brown and white. The Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club was formed in 1930, and the elected President was Mr Fletcher Jones (later Sir Fletcher Jones). It is one of the oldest lifesaving clubs on the Victorian Coast. The donor was a member of the surf boat crew that won the 1952 Victorian Surf Boat Championships; the crew comprised Geoff Scott, Ron Blackney, Wes McLaren, Jim Tibb, and Stan Stephens. This oar is significant for its connection with the Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club and as an example of equipment used for saving lives at sea in the local Warrnambool community. John McNaughton was also president of the 1929 Ballarat Teachers' College Dramatic Club. The 1929 Ballarat Teachers' College Council comprised of Miss A. Ballinger, Mr R. Broben, John H. McNaughton, Mr R.P. Warriner and Miss Monahan.Crimson soft covered booklet of 50 pages relating to the Ballarat Teachers' College. It belonged to John McNaughton. The magazine includes the following images: Ballarat Teachers' College Staff and Students; women's tennis; football, men's tennis; hockey; Ballarat Teachers' College Council; visit of Bendigo Teachers' College. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge.
