The photos are the presentation by Alan Holmes President of Bendigo RSL to Cliff Clohesy in February 1997. Clifford Clohesy served on the Committee Bendigo RSL 1989 to 1991, 1993 to 1996, he was President the years 1993 to 1996. Cliff was a hard worker in the two RSL Appeals each year. One of his achievements was the building of 22 Single person units in Kangaroo Flat finished in 1997. Alan William Holmes served on the Committee 1993 to 2001. He was President the years 1997 to 2001. Two of the later years was the change over from Bendigo RSL to Bendigo District RSL Sub Branch Inc. He was the Organizer of events for the "Australia Remembers" 50 years after the end of WW2 in Bendigo. It was Alans proposal to turn the SMI into a Museum in 1996 with the first Museum Sub Committee being formed in May 1997 and the opening in February 1998. Now the Bendigo Military Museum. He stayed heavily involved until 2003. He was the organizer and conducted the Sandakan Memorial Service from 1999 to 2012. From there as much as possible Alan visited veterans in Nursing homes and a Wing of "BUPA" was named "Holmes Wing". These Constitutions dated 14.11.1952 with the name's , "A.V. Palmer - President" (Bendigo RSL) "N.D. Wilson - President - Vic Branch R.S.S.A.I.L.A". The small booklets were headed "Rules of the Bendigo Returned Servicemen's Club - 1956" As far back as 1950 there was discussion within the Sub Branch re a Club in suitable premises. A property was purchased being 11 McKenzie Street Bendigo with the title dated 9.2.1951, the facility opened on 1.6.1951 but without a Liqueur Licence. RSL Funeral services conducted by the Bendigo RSL Sub Branch and Bendigo District RSL Sub Branch for their departed members. .1) The first entry in the book is 27.10.1965 and the last on 27.12.2008. A large amount of the entries were written by Jack Barnes OAM during his 43 years as Secretary of the Sub Branch. (Refer Cat No 8040). The vast majority of the funerals were conducted by the President at the time, Committee members or members who were heavily involved with the Sub Branch. It's virtual who's who of Presidents, Life members and notables. 1988 saw the most funerals conducted during that year being 60, other figures varied from mid 20's to mid 50's per year. One notable funeral Volunteer was John Balsillie MBE. (Refer Cat No 118.5) Between 2.1.2007 - 27.12.2008 there was 80 funerals with John conducting 78 of them. There is an interesting addition of one funeral by Jack Barnes on 31.1.1968 was that it was (111 degrees). .2) The list on the sheet with a note, "For Cindy" who was the BDRSL Office Person at the time. these were for 2007, there was 19 on the sheet with only 9 in the book, 7 of the names have a red tick beside. The sheet was written by John Balsillie. The formation of the Bendigo District RSL Sub Branch was an amalgamation of the 3 RSL Sub Branches in Bendigo, Bendigo, Kangaroo Flat and Eaglehawk. In 1978 a "Servicemen's Club" was formed by the 3 Sub Branches as a Social venue which included lawn bowls. In year 2000 this venue became the Bendigo District RSL Sub Branch INC of the 3 Sub Branches. Kangaroo Flat retained their own Sub Branch HQ same as Eaglehawk, Bendigo’s HQ became the Sub Branch at the venue instead of the SMI at Pall Mall.Charter, timber framed with gold edging, the charter is various colours with the RSL badge central at the top with the flag either side with the word Charter in big letters under followed by the wording to establish a Sub Branch. Presentation of Life Membership to William James Norman Smart (Norm) at the Bendigo RSL Sub Branch Annual Dinner in 1998. Norm served on the Committee of the Sub Branch from 1985 to 2003, he was Treasurer from 1989 to 2003. He also served on the Welfare and Charitable Sub Committee, as a delegate to the 27/27A District Board of the RSL, an Office Bearer of the RSL Flats in Kangaroo Flat from 1987 to 2002, as a museum guide in the RSL Museum SMI from 1998 to 2015. With Appeals Norm raised some $250,000.00 in the Anzac & Poppy Appeals. The recommendation details his awards of being made a Life Govenor twice, Fund raising for the POW efforts, RSL Relief fund, RSL Picnic Committee, Chairman & Organizer off, RSL Inter Units Social Club, President and Treasurer off and Committee.
